Winter may be beautiful, but cold wind and dry heat can truly sabotage your hair. There are plenty of products that moisturizer and beautify, but the following sets of styling products and two truly magical oils, can help you deal very well with Winter’s beauty issues:
TWO STYLING COLLECTIONS TO COMBAT WINTER HAIR ISSUES:
I was recently introduced to a quartet of styling products called Mane Boost from XANIA. The idea of these salon products is to add volume without teasing. There is an Amplifying Cream, Volumizing Foam, Root Lifting Spray, and Defining Paste. All arrive in pumps or flip-top tubes, except the paste, which is house in a traditional, screw-top jar. One of the things I like about these products is that they are simple to use and each is just $12.00. In the Winter, when hat hair and dry heat make hair simply lie down and play dead, styling products are not just nice, they are definitely, needed. In this quartet of stylers, I particularly liked the root lifting spray that you can use all over, but especially at the temples, where your hat is trying to squash the life out of your style. The spray doesn’t weigh hair down (that would defeat the purpose of a root lifter) and it adds shine and helps make heat styling easier. That’s a lot for just a little! I also like the Amplifying Cream that adds volume but also protects against blow dryers and other heat stylers. I didn’t try the Volumizing Foam, but the product has flexible-hold resins that help build body and tame fly-aways and frizz, and this sounds like a good reason to try it!. If your hair is short and spike-y or piece-y the Defining Paste gives you volume and the ability to create texture, without making your hair dry and crunchy, or so sticky your hat will fuse to your head (just kidding, but some paste stylers really do attract dirt and dust and lint and….). These are nicely performing products with prices to match that still pamper you and your hair. For more information Mane Boost is available in salons and spas and online. Redken is known as one of the leading hair styling/care companies and the leading choice of stylists backstage during fashion weeks. But they make all sorts of salon and consumer products for women and men who also want to get great results, at home. Recently, Redken organized their nearly dizzying display of six volumizing styling products into hair care “zones” (roots, all over and lengths) that help you determine the right product, to put, where. Ask yourself. What part of my hair do I want to “amplify?” Do you want to boost your roots? Redken’s got a trio of treat for you. Redken’s Guts 10 $16.00 for 10.58 oz. is a stylist’s favorite. It is a targeted volume foam in a spray can (I have seen it used so many times backstage at fashion week). There’s also Rootful 06 $15.50 8.5 oz. (a root lifing spray that adds lightweight volume and frizz control) and Thickening Lotion 06 $15.00 5 oz. (for all over body in a lightweight, alcohol-free formula that also adds substance and thickness to each strand). Looking for volume in longer, layered styles? Redken’s Layer Lift 07 $15.50 5.7 oz. adds volume and also fights frrizz (and it’s one of my personal favorites because it doesn’t weigh hair down). Want all over volumizing? Not every does, all the time, but when it’s time for “big” (or at least, “bigger”) hair try Full Frame 07, a pump-top spray mousse that has volumizing polymers for more lift and body, or Aerate 08, a cream-mousee that conditions as well as boosts volume. That’s just a brief rundown of these high performance but reasonably priced, salon-quality products.
I am loving fabulous Redken Shine Flash 02. One quick blast of spray adds shine and smooths frizzies and fly-aways. The scent is kind of chemical-y but it dissipates quickly and transforms dull, dry hair just as it says, in a flash! The secret is a complex with shine-boosting and conditioning camelina oil and nourishing vitamin B5 It is the easiest way to deal with static and add shine at home or at the office, and it doesn’t make hair greasy or limp. It’s a pick-me-up well worth the $17.00 price tag. For more information visit an authorized salon that sells Redken products, or visit the Redken Website to find one in your area.
TWO MULTI-TASKING, BEAUTIFYING OILS:
When you think about oil in your hair, you probably think about cleansers, but some oils are actually beneficial beautifiers. Coming in February is a new one from Redken —All Soft Argan-6 Oil ($29.00 3 fl. oz) is a multi-tasking little wonder in a pump bottle. Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree and is one of the rarest oils in the world, due to the small and very specific growing areas in Morocco. You can use Redken’s Argan-6 Oil on dry hair, or wet hair, for different purposes. On wet hair it protects against heat stylers and helps detangle. You can also mix it with a bit of Redken Satinwear 02 Ultimate Blow Dry Lotion and make a cocktail that helps smooth, shine, de-frizz and generally pamper. On dry hair it does something else that plagues many people in Winter — it helps alleviate dry scalp. Massage 2-3 drops of this argan oil into hair and scalp, leave it on 5-10 minutes, then cleanse and condition hair. And if intense scalp pampering isn’t necessary, you’ll find that it does a great job of taming frizzy, dry hair or hair that tends to get frizzy. Take it to the office, and when you remove your hat, smooth a few drops over your hair to instantly de-frizz. You can also use it to add shine on dry hair, or add it on damp hair before going to bed. The formula works overnight (but won’t transfer “yuk” to your pillow). In the morning, leave it in or rinse it out for smoother, shinier, less static-y hair. Style Tips: Add airy volume and moisture to fine, dry hair by layering a small amount of aerate 08 bodifying cream-mousse and Argan-6 Oil. Blow-dry with a medium-round brush. For a soft, disheveled look, layer tousle whip 04 and Argan-6 Oil on damp hair. Blow-dry with fingers and apply Argan-6 Oil to ends as needed. To give dry, curly hair frizz-free definition plus an added dose of moisture, layer curl wise 14 and Argan-6 Oil on damp hair. Allow to air-dry, then add additional Argan-6 Oil as needed. It’s pricey, but you don’t need a lot, and yet, it will do a lot, for your hair!
Mythic Oil by L’Oreal Professionnel is one of those products you didn’t know you needed, until you tried it. And no, it’s not a myth, it’s real. This new, Mythic Oil $29.00 4.2 fl. oz. is inspired by ancient beauty rituals. Inside the clear pump bottle with gold top is a golden-tinted oil that works hard to nourish, protect and add shine to all hair types. In fact, no matter what kind of hair you have, the oil will penetrate instead of just loafing around on top (a coating that is too heavy is what pulls the hair down and makes it limp). One or two pumps of this precious liquid doesn’t just make hair look shinier and healthier, it also helps to diminish one of the hair saboteurs of Winter: hair static. The secret is a blend of two oils: avocado (rich in fatty acids, omega 3, 6 & 9, and Vitamins A, B1, B2 and D), plus grape seed oil with powerful antioxidant action. If you’re trying to blow dry and keep hair from flying around in dry heat, this definitely helps. You can even use this one overnight as a night-time intensive booster to nourish hair. You can also add shine to your style by mixing a couple of drops of Mythic Oil to your favorite styling product to add softness and shine. During the day, apply it to dry ends to fight frizz and add smoothness. L’Oreal products are sold in authorized salons. If you want to get yours, visit the L’Oreal Professionnel Website.
