Beautiful Coffee Table Books:
Do you remember when The White House was redecorated by then-First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy? The White House is the nations’ showpiece and a source of national pride. Therefore I loved Designing Camelot: The Kennedy White House Restoration and Its Legacy by James Archer Abbott and Elaine Rice Bachmann with a foreword by Caroline Kennedy (The White Houser Historical Association, July 2021).
This gorgeous 4 1/2 lb. book has full color and stunning black and white photos and artists’ renderings. In the Kennedy White House, glamour was omnipresent. Each room is lovingly detailed highlighting color schemes, paintings, furniture, and other details. Camelot is over, but nevertheless, whether you’re into design, fashion, politics, nostalgia, or just love special things, it’s a great gift idea. Get This Book
Unique Books For Special Interests:
Whether you think California is “that crazy place on the West Coast” or not, Made in California: The California-Born Burger Joints, Diners, Fast Food & Restaurants That Changed America by George Geary (Turner Publishing/Prospect Park Books August 2021) will give you a different perspective on the State. I love coffee table books that show you what life was like “way back when.” Many of the unique restaurants have hit the rubble pile, but many of your favorites are still around.
Looking through the photos I was surprised to see waitresses wearing uniforms more akin to a nurse than a server. Many of the buildings were made to reflect the shape of what was served, within. So many of these were innovations from California. It’s not just raw and vegan food. I was amazed at the history of these iconic places. Have fun reading it and gift this great book to give this holiday season. Buy This Book
For your warm-weather friends missing the Winter, or for anyone who is fascinated by snowflakes, Capturing Snowflakes, Winter’s Frozen Artistry by Kenneth Libbrect and Rachel Wing (Quarto/Voyager Press October 2021) is a fabulous holiday gift idea. The book even comes with a silvery snowflake ornament in the cover, which can be removed. The book has over 430+ images of snowflakes captured by the photo-microscope of the world’s leading expert on the subject, Kenneth Libbrecht. He’s a professor of physics at Caltech who also served as a science consultant for Disney’s Frozen movies.
Take note this isn’t a children’s book. It’s heavy on scientific details, However, for the adult who is difficult to please, this book is both a keepsake, a work of art, and will keep their attention as they learn more than they ever thought possible about snowflakes. Buy This Book.
If you are either an author or a reader, The Curious Reader: A Literary Miscellany of Novels & Novelists edited by Erin McCarthy and the Team at Mental Floss (Insight Publishing 2021) will keep you amazed, amused, and educated for hours on end. It’s fabulous for learning about famous authors and their books. You’re sure to find some of your favorite authors. But even if you haven’t read all the books mentioned you’ll be inspired to read the ones you haven’t yet picked up.
If you’re interested in the authors, you may be enticed to go back to that book you loathed in high school or college. Re-read it now, appreciating its backstory. Did you know that George Orwell had a near-death experience while writing of 1984? Or, that a famous author kept her husband’s heart after he died? There’s lots more to learn. This makes a great holiday gift idea for your literary friends. Buy This Book
The Friends Central Perk Official Cookbook by Kara Michelson (Insight Editions (October 5, 2021)) will be the gift of the year for those who religiously watched every episode of the beloved 90’s sitcom television series, Friends. This cute cookbook is chock full of recipes plus a story from the episode related to the recipe. You’ll see lots of color photos. It’s lots of fun just to go through the book and, remember the episodes you loved.
Not all of the recipes are beverages, although there are obviously a lot of those. It’s more sipping and nibbling than entrees. Some of the recipes are for more advanced cooks. Thankfully, the author lets you know which ones are easy, medium, or harder than that. Phoebe’s Rescued Rosemary Cheddar Christmas Tree Crackers are easy and cute and fun to make for the holidays. Do you or someone you know adore Quinoa? The Complete Quinoa Cookbook: Over 100 Recipes Perfect For Vegan & Plant-Based Diets by Catherine Gill (Hatherleigh Press 2021) will thrill you. You certainly don’t have to be a vegan to want to add quinoa to your diet. Just some of the reasons Quinoa has health benefits is that it’s a “perfect” protein. It contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies need, but can’t produce on their own. It’s also low on the Glycemic Index and more.
However, the most important reason is that it is delicious and versatile. I’ve already picked my favorite new side dish: Coconut Ginger Quinoa! There is a myriad of things to make for every meal or snack. Which will be your favorites? Gift this one to yourself or to someone you love who needs to eat better. It’s just $13 in paperback.
