Call me crazy, but I was surprised that a new, signature scent from Kate Spade would be a friendly, fruity floral. Somehow I thought that Kate Spade Twirl would contain the smell of fine leather as a nod to her fabulous leather goods. But Twirl by Kate Spade isn’t seductive leather as much as a party dress, on your skin. Twirl is the joyous spin a girl does when she’s put on a pretty dress and she’s ready to head out to party with a lighthearted excitement that is contained in Twirl’s confetti, champagne bubbled, bottle.
The description (press, not personally mine) is as follows: “at Kate Spade we love colored tights and sparkly heels, festive fetes and tables for two. We believe in celebrations both big and small and when it came time to design our signature scent, we created a fragrance infused with joi de vivre,. Twirl encapsulates the floral fragrance of a garden in bloom finished with a twist of fresh fruit. It’s the perfect cocktail, so to speak—equally at ease at an afternoon lawn party or a night on the town. Cheers.”
So what does this “joi de vivre” smell like? Twirl is a fresh floral with a bit of fruit that is youthful, girly, fresh, and fun with coquettish, seductive twist at the finish. It’s also beautiful to look at. The idea of this signature Eau De Parfum is a lawn party, or any “fete” that is a happy celebration. The outer carton is a striking hot and light pink square with “Twirl”in pale pink graffiti style script, and a big metallic gold “Twirl” with other gold accents. Inside is a clear round orb with gold dots of confetti (or champagne bubbles) and a facted round gold top rimmed at the neck with a discreet band of hot pink enamel. It’s truly Kate Spade quality elegant. Even if I didn’t like the fragrance, I might still be tempted to buy it for the bottle.
But of course, it’s the fragrance you are buying and wearing on your skin. This one starts with pink watermelon, blackberry and red currant, mixing with a heart of florals including orange blossom, star jasmine, tiare flower and sweet magnolia. The bottom notes are what remain, even hours after the other notes have taken their bows. Luminous musks and a touch of French macaroon temper the fruits and flowers, adding a truly delicious but delicate whisp of seduction. I once talked to Twirl’s perfumer, Claude Dir as he described some of the creative process that is part of making a fragrance. I was not just enchanted and fascinated, I never forgot how he described the “journey” and “life” of a fragrance from your first sniff to the very last, lingering notes. Twirl takes you on that journey, from the first, recognizable burst of fruit through a garden of white florals, to the after hours just-us drydown when the party is winding down. Perfumer Claude Dir of Givaudan did capture the feeling that Kate Spade wanted from Twirl. It is uncomplicated enough for young women but possibly their Kate Spade smitten mothers will want it too.
