It may be challenging to think about Fall or the Winter holidays, when it’s hot enough to cook an egg on the sidewalk in NYC, but the first few days of August ushered in one of my favorite,seasonal trade shows: Accessories, the Show, plus FAME and Moda Manhattan. The focus was on Fall through Holiday 2010.

Accessories The Show is the only juried, all-accessories trade event in the U.S.,attracting literally thousands of fine specialty buyers from retails outlets of all types, even airport shops and spas. This is a large trade show, separated by individual interests. FAME focuses on Junior & Young Contemporary fashion and accessories, and Moda Manhattan features Juried ready to wear. This show (or trio of shows) at the Javits Center in Manhattan, has so much to look at and consider, it’s dizzying. There is always something exciting, new, and unique to discover. Here are some of the items I think are highlights, just to give you a heads up for Fall into the holidays:

Liquid Metal Jewelry

Corina Collections was at the show, featuring magical, Liquid Metal accessories. I was introduced to Liquid Metal by Sergio Gutierrez during Spring 2010 Fashion Week. I covered the backstage, and then had a front row seat for this amazing show. Liquid metal, as you can see from the photo above, looks like modern chain mail, but the thing that captivates me is the way this fluid metal jewelry simply (for lack of a better world) “melts” into your skin and becomes one with it. The clasps are interesting too. Some are snaps, others, magnets. There is something for everyone in the Liquid Metal jewelry line, and there’s also a beautiful collection of vests and belts, and handbags. Just one of these amazing and unique pieces will go with everything from jeans, to your business attire, to dressy clothes. I am dying to have a piece of my own!

Ethnic jewelry with natural stones or shells were everywhere. If you’ve been storing your pieces from the 60’s and 70’s, now is the time to get them out of the box, and onto your body. If you don’t own any, the good news is that ethnic jewelry featuring semi precious or natural items can be very affordable. I loved these coral pieces.

Ethnic clothing was everywhere. Expect to see a lot of embroidery, fringes, easy to ware tunics, and “boho” embellishments. The classic and pretty, tweed shift gives you an idea of what I saw (a lot of) at Accessories, Fame, and Moda Manhattan. Gone were the brights and neon of Spring, replaced by dour neturals and very subdued patterns. Clothing was mostly unadorned and in tailored shapes. Personally, these colors and styles do not make me feel happy, but basic styles, in black, brown, grey or camel will never go out of style.

One of the fun things you can do to dress up last year’s outfit, or add a bit of panache to those sadly subdued outfits, is to add a glitzy hair ornament. Jimmy Crystal NY delights me. I can’t go to Accessories, the Show, and not stop by their dazzling booth, full of Swarovski crystal embellished goodies. If you see me at Fashion Week, ask me for my business card. I’ll be using a tiger-striped, crystal studded card case. Crystal-embellished goodies are just such fun to use, whether it’s an evening bag with a crystal studded clasp, or something as a pen or a watch. A bit of bling on a daily basis–good for the soul !
