Creative Nail Design & Alexander Berardi New York Fall 2010

Alexander Berardi’s Fall 2010 collection was inspired by old Hollywood glamour, but, of course, made new with oversized “boyfriend” shirts and tuxedos, sexy party dresses in sheer and silk, and even one stunning, ivory gown that a silver screen goddess would feel quite comfortable in. These are luxurious clothes for elegant women, not the sort you’d bum around in by any means.


Every Hollywood star needs great nails, and the models for Alexander Berardi got theirs, courtesy of especially manicured and prepared “press-on” nails, created by Creative Nail Design. I will be adding a video of CND lead nail expert Angie Wingle, detailing the nails, but in summary, each model got nails of a specific color and texture, depening upon what she was wearing. The nails were painted with blackjack, studio white, or dark ruby. Then some of the nails were treated with texture. The red nails actually had crushed glass sprinkled on top for texture, while the black nails were dusted to be more matte. Some of the white nails had an overlay of CND’s opalescent Effect, and one set of white nails also had crushed glass for the finale. The other nails had french tips. You could really see the glass catch the light as the models walked down the runway. You can re-create some of these looks at home. Vogue’s Creative Director Grace Coddington


Leon Gorman for Cutler & Redken explained the hair look as: “Grace Coddington, on the catwalk.” I have to say that the hair looked gorgeous on the runway, although it isn’t something most women could just do at home. . “Big” hair seems to be a trend that is coming back for fall. A boom for all those curly haired women for whom wild hair is something they’ve had to tame every single days, for years. Gorman suggested that for women who don’t have “Coddington-type” tresses, this labor intensive hair would probably bring them to the salon, much like they did in the 1980’s (when frizz was a must-have). To get the look, Gorman set the girl’s long hair in very tight pincurls, and then brushed it out a little bit for texture. Then he used hair spray to set the look becausse ” hair spray dries the hair and sets it, and when you brush it would it gives you a nice, frizzy texcture.” He used all Redken products, depending upon the type of hair the model had. For those who cannot handle straight hair easily, you’ll be happy to know that at least Gorman thinks that “the whole striaght hair thing is such a big deal anymore. ”

The makeup was made to order for a modern film siren, created by Deanna Melluso at ArtList New York. The focus was on strong, red lips, but it was a bold, modern, warm red. The face was luminous and perfect, the eyes, a bit glossy. The idea was to re-create 1940’s old hollywood glamour. Products used were primarily Estee Lauder and Kanebo, with DiorShow mascara just on the ends of the lashes.
