On a particularly raw, rainy evening in March, a group of editors gathered at Lanai Kai to sip tropical drinks, meet New Jersey-ite, Alyssa Campanella, who also happens to be Miss USA 2011, and to learn about Australian Gold Sheer Coverage Sun Screens. This is a collection of sun protection products that everyone from beauty queens to the rest of us, can really love.
While sun protection is important every day of the year, even in the cooler months, I saved my review for now in June, because it’s really this time of year when the sun is strongest and we tend to stay exposed the longest, when we need to consider sun protection, the most.
Australian Gold Sheer Coverage has something called “Invisidry Technology” with silica, that lets the products absorb into your skin and dry, very quickly. The products don’t contain sticky ingredients such as mineral oil or give your skin a coating that looks shiny like plastic. and even better, Microspheres and Emollient Ester allows the products to absorb and dry super-fast, so you never feel wet or sticky. More importantly, they’re water and sweat resistant, and yes, even moisturizing. The fragrance (it is billed as “tropical”) is a nice change from coconut and chemicals. These are initially a bit citrus-y and then softly floral.
For over two decades, the Australian Gold brand has produced Outdoor SPF Sunscreen Lotions with quality bronzing power but also with protection from the sun. No matter what your goal (to bronze, or not to bronze), effective sun protection is a must! What you don’t know about sun protection can literally, kill you. If you want to know more about how to protect yourself, and what you need to know about the sun SPF regulations, you can read more in this Advice Sisters article.
The trio of new, broad spectrum UVA/UVB protective sun screens from Australian Gold come in two sprays of SPF 15 and 30, and a (for faces) lotion in a flip top cap featuring SPF 45. Here’s the “deets” on these.
Australian Gold Sheer Coverage Faces SPF 45, 3 FL Oz, $Srp. 11.00. This lotion in a flip top cap is not only pleasant to use and has a very impressive SPF 45 broad spectrum sun screen, it also features an Anti-Aging formula with native Australian Acacia Extract for antioxidant. The oil-free formula actually feels luxurious on your face, and it’s Dermatologist tested and Hypoallergenic. In case you’re planning to swim (or sweat), it’s nice to know that your skin will be protected with this Water Resistant formula for 80 minutes. Be sure to apply it evenly and liberally to all exposed areas 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at frequent intervals or after towel drying, swimming, perspiring or vigorous activity. The active ingredients in this product include 3% avobenzone; 10% homosalate; 5% octisalate; 2.75% octocrylene; and 2% oxybenzone, along with a bunch of inactive ingredients. If you like lotions, there are three for the body as well in SPF 8, 15 and 30 for $10.99 3 fl. oz.
Australian Gold Spray Sheer Coverage SPF 30 (also in 15), $10.99 6 fl. oz. has the same properties as the Sheer Coverage Faces, above, with UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum protection that will last up to 80 minutes, with a water-resistant formula. These oil-free products features actives of 2% avobenzone; 7.5% homosalate; 5% octisalate; 2.75% octocrylene; and 2% oxybenzone, along with a bunch of inactive ingredients . I personally love spray sun protection because it allows you to get to places on your body you can’t reach with your hands, alone unless you have a helper. The rules about sun protection sprays are not finalized, but even though the product may be applied more lightly than with a lotion, it keeps your hands clean, so you’re likely to spray it more often than you apply a lotion or cream.
Remember that sun block only works if you use enough, and re-apply it often to every exposed area of your skin. But if you do get burned, Australian Gold has a Soothing ALOE Gel that arrives in a huge, 18.5OZ plastic bottle with flip top cap, for just $6.99. Aloe is the #1 magic potion for skin irritations, burns, bug bites and for sunburn. This one has a non-sticky formula (with that same nice Australian Gold fragrance), plus Native Australian Acacia Extract for antioxidant benefits, Vitamin C and E to nourish distressed skin, and Green Tea Extract helps protect skin against free radicals. The gel is soothing, moisturizing, and will help stop your skin from peeling, even if you aren’t burned. So slather it on after sunning and save your skin!
One other thing you might like to know about these product is that they contain a Photostabilized formula that won’t break
down in the heat. If anyone knows a thing or two about heat, it’s Miss USA, who endures hot lights at photo shoots, and probably plenty of sun exposure at events. She was kind enough to pose with me at the launch event (remind me never to take a photo with a beauty queen wearing sky-high stilettos when I’ve dressed casually and look haggard from a long day and a trek in the rain! But Miss USA has to always look her best no matter what the weather is. In Summer, she must definitely protect her skin from the sun. You can tell this redhead with creamy skin is an American beauty who is sold on Australian Gold.
At the Australian Gold Sheer Coverage Launch,we had a chance to learn a little more about Alyssa, too. For example, she dished that she is absolutely diligent about removing her makeup, even if the rest of us are too tired at night to get it all off. She uses a gentle scrub, a toner, and a moisturizer on a daily basis, and a mask a couple of times a week. And what do you think are the two products a beauty queen like Alyssa needs the most? Chapstick for dry lips, and the all-time favorite of most women — mascara!
