Real Life Non Fiction:
First up on my list of Fall book reviews is Transformed by Remi Adeleke (Thomas Nelson; Illustrated edition (May 2019). Remi was a youngster in Nigeria when the corrupt government stole his father’s assets. Then his dad died and his mother took Remi and his younger brother to America. They lived in the Bronx. Remi got himself into trouble and had two warrants for his arrest. I’m not going to tell you the entire story, but through hard work and determination, Remi became a Navy SEAL, He got two degrees, married, and had two sons. When he ended his successful naval career, he became involved in the film business. The story is so inspiring because Remy never gave up. I was transfixed by Transformed (buy this book)
The Menopause Manifesto by Dr. Gel Gunter (Citadel Press 2021) really isn’t a manifesto. Instead, it offers a wealth of information presented in simple but serious terms. The focus is on how the author feels women can (or should) feel about aging. She is an OB/GYN with more than 3 decades of experience. She methodically goes through each sign and symptom and treatment for more issues than any one of us will likely face. Therefore, really it’s a factbook (done very well). She also makes modest attempts at pointing out that women have traditionally been dismissed by doctors (predominantly men). Aso that more mature women are treated as dried-up crones or dismissed or discarded because they are over child-bearing age. This book brings everything out in the open. (buy this book)

Even if you are just taking a walk, there are many ways to include your cat in some of your activities or your next big adventure. Not fun per so, but as for these Fall book reviews, this focuses on the more intimate side of homelessness. You may feel just fine on the inside, but people judge what you look like on the outside. That’s the premise of Do Something For Nothing: Seeing Beneath the Surface of Homelessness Through the Simple Act of a Haircut, by Joshua Coombes (Akashic Books, May 2021) The author is a London hairdresser. In 2015 he took to the streets with his scissors. He began posting before and after shots of his homeless “clients.” on social media. The intent of hashtags #JustBe Kind and #DoSomethignForNothing are powerful and inspirational messages. You will learn something. They will make you take a second look at the homeless you see in your area. They should be treated with consideration, even if they don’t look just like you. (buy this book)
