What’s BOOM by Cindy Joseph?
Makeup artist Cindy Joseph has worked with top models such as Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington. When Joseph was 49 years old, she decided to stop dying her hair and embrace her silver locks. For most women, this is a life-changing and emotional decision. However, her silver hair ended up netting her a Dolce & Gabbana ad. With that, Cindy became a model working with the Ford modeling agency. She appeared in ads for companies including Ann Taylor, Olay, Anthropologie, and Elizabeth Arden in her 50s and 60s.
And then she founded BOOM by Cindy Joseph. BOOM is a makeup and skincare line devoted to helping women in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond bring out their natural beauty. She has been quoted as saying that she is “pro-age.” As a makeup artist as well as a more mature model, this makes perfect sense. For those who need to know, They products are cruelty-free certified organic, and made in the USA. That doesn’t mean not caring about how you look. But it does mean looking your best without trying to look younger. BOOM by Cindy Joseph has a motto that’s on their fun fabric zippered bags: It’s about women, It’s about beauty. It’s about time.
Summer Skincare Idea:
I have wanted to try some of these products for quite a while, so I tested out the Basic BOOM Bag (there are other sets — this one is $171.95 which is a 5% savings over individual purchases). Inside the Basic Boom Bag are some of Cindy’s most popular and essential products: BOOMSilk Moisturizer, BOOMNectar, and a little zippered fabric pouch with 3 BOOMSticks.
The Basic Boom Bag:
I’m thinking about Summer vacations, weekend trips, and ways to lighten up my skincare routine. Summer may be fun with tiki drinks and sunshine, but it’s also hot and humid in most places. The Basic BOOM Bag seems like a good way to deal with Summer skincare. Let’s look at what is in the Basic BOOM Bag and what the products can do for you.
What’s a Boomstick?
Boomsticks ($28/each if purchased separately) is a trio of swivel-up tubes that can multi-task as blush, lipstick, eyeshadow, highlighter, moisturizer, cuticle cream, body cream, body luster, and more. The trio is $79 but you save 5% on them as part of the BOOM Bag above. Boomstick Glo is a moisturizing stick of all-natural ingredients. After using this stick, apply Boomstick Color to your cheeks, forehead, neck, and décolleté. You can use it on your lips and your eyes if you wish. Then add some radiance with the Boomstick Glimmer.
Boomstick Glo has the same ingredients as the creamy moisturizer, Boomsilk but in a stick form. It’s suggested that you apply Boomstick Glo around your eyes, on your face, over your lips and down your neck. Also use it to smooth it over elbows, cuticles, and any area of your body that can benefit from additional moisture. A little goes a long way and it’s so convenient for your purse. Nice to know that there are no emulsifiers, binders, perfumes, parabens, or phthalates.
Boomstick Color is a great product, although I don’t really like to use the same color on my lips and eyes as on my cheeks. My editorial sample was a semi-sheer and super-blendable wine color. It can be used as lipstick, blush, bronzer, etc. There is also a rose/nude stick which would have been more flattering to me personally. However I really like the product for touch-ups during the day and travel, it’s a great idea.
Boomstick Glimmer is actually my favorite of the trio. It is not glittery, and not overly shiny. It’s a subtle and sheer, pearlescent sheen that will flatter any skin tone. Add a little for the daytime and more for the evening. It’s a fun glamorizer.
BOOMsilk Moisturizer:
- Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Beeswax with Naturally Occurring Pollen and Propolis
- Honey with Naturally Occurring Royal Jelly
- Tocopherols (Natural Vitamin E)
BOOMSilk is a multi-tasking moisturizer that Boom by Cindy Joseph claims will take the place of 12 different moisturizers you might have for face and body. Well, other than beauty editors, I don’t know too many people with a dozen different moisturizers. However, the intent is clear. BOOMSilk theoretically can replace your face cream, lip balm, day cream, night cream, cuticle cream, hand lotion, foot cream, and any other moisturizer in your cabinet.
It’s a little sticky as you apply it but it’s quickly absorbed. It is a super moisturizer. Alas, my sample didn’t come with an applicator and it’s in my least favorite kind of container — a screw-top jar. Unless you are going to use it up quickly, it just might end up contaminated by your fingers, skin flakes, etc. Use an applicator if you can. Key ingredients include purified water, organic extra virgin olive fruit oil, Beeswax, Organic Honey, and Natural Vitamin E.
BOOMNectar:
BOOMNectar is a lightweight serum for the face and eyes with 16 all-natural, vitamin-rich ingredients for thoroughly nourished skin. It is in an amber-tinted bottle with a pump top. Among the ingredients are a lot of oils such as Jojoba, Extra Virgin Olive Fruit, Rosehip, Avocado Oil, and Hemp Seed. There are also essential oils of honey, lemon, citrus, and ylang-ylang. Plus, (Rose) Hydrosol*, Beeswax, Witch Hazel, and Purified Water, among things.
The highly emollient ingredients are great, but after shaking the bottle and applying the serum I noticed a slightly weird smell that didn’t appeal to me. The 1 oz. purchased individually is just $58 and you don’t need much. If you love it you can get 2 oz. for $86. Other than the scent, I think it’s a lovely serum that really brings dry and mature skin back to life.
Why BOOM?
I still am not sure why the company is called BOOM. Maybe it’s short for “baby boomer.” Anyone can use these products at any age, but the boomers are probably the target audience. Technically, the Basic Boom Bag can get you through travel long or short, and of course, give you a chance to try some of the star products. It would be nice if there were sample sizes that you could purchase individually, but I am aware that not every cosmetics company can afford to do that. In addition, a lot of women of all ages have broken capillaries or blemishes they feel they must conceal. None of the products from BOOM will do that. There’s no foundation in Boom by Cindy Joseph.
Even more critically missing from this otherwise nice collection of products is anything with SPF. To me, that’s essential you can’t live without. Therefore it’s a must-have daily product. I hope that Cindy makes a BOOMStick with SPF!
