Millions of Americans have turned to CBD oil to help with beauty and wellness. Some devotees say it’s a better pain reducer than painkillers like Vicodin and Oxycontin. Is this a legitimate claim and is this “natural opioid” a real thing, or just a fad?
When I met representatives CBD For Life at an editor’s event called “The Beauty Edit” it was just prior to my knee surgery. After surgery, I didn’t want to take controlled substances. It was the perfect time to contact the people at CBD for Life and try out their alternatives to prescription pain medication.
What is CBD?
Yes, It’s hemp but CBD is made from Cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis (derived from the stalk of the male marijuana plant and hasn’t any THC (which can give you that high) so CBD offers a variety of medical benefits with none of the intoxication.
It is an ingredient in cannabis that relieves pain and fights inflammation along with a slew of other miraculous benefits. What CBD does best is reduce inflammation so pain can be reduced.
CBD for Life’s Pain Relief Spray is 99% pure CBD extract but pure CBD does not contain THC (that’s the cannabidiol in marijuana that gets smokers “high”). The pain relief benefit comes from the CBD and not from the THC which is safe and legal in all 50 states.
Are CBD Claims Real?
Purveyors of Pure CBD Oil claim that it will not just reduce pain, but could also provide all sorts of health benefits from mental disorders to diseases and diabetes, but mostly, it’s for pain management.
Like everything else I review, my opinion is based on my personal experience and whatever valid research I can find. The CBD oil which comes in both a spray bottle or a travel-friendly roll-on actually did dull my pain but since I didn’t try opioids I can’t compare results.
Clearly, for me, the products worked although not to the point where I was totally pain-free. However, pain is so subjective, what works or doesn’t work for me, isn’t the same for the next person.
CBD for Life Products:
CBD for Life has a number of products including skin care and hair care that are not pain relievers. They are GMO, Parabens, Phthalates, Formaldehyde, and Artificial coloring-Free and not tested on animals. Some are also vegan.
CBD 99% Pure CBD Extract in a 4 fl. oz. spray bottle ($26) also has menthol. This is the product that really, for me, packed the best pain-relieving punch. Just spray and go on your way, no need to even rub it in. The menthol is not overpowering as with some of the over the counter menthol pain relieving brands. However, you will experience a bit of oil residue on your skin if you use too much.
For travel, the Roll-On Oil ($30) in lavender or lemongrass is a good bet. This product is vegan as well as free from the ingredients I’ve listed that no one really wants in their healthcare. Another bonus is that you can just roll a bit on your temples and the back of your neck if it’s stiff, or if you’re feeling a headache coming on. The lavender and lemongrass scents are pleasing and authentic.
Ingredients:
This product really is one to consider, as the first ingredient is caprylic/capric triglyceride derived from coconut oil and glycerin (an emollient) but the second ingredient is Cannabis Sativa (Hemp Seed Oil) followed by Cannaboid Extract, jojoba seed oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus leaf oil, menthol, coconut oil, peppermint oil, rosemary leaf oil and lemon seed oil.
CBD Beauty:
Along with the rubs, sprays, and skincare, there is also hair care. I also tried the CBD for Life Shampoo and Conditioner ($25/ 10. fl. o.z. also available in 2 fl. oz. travel sizes). Obviously, there’s no pain killing feature to these, but I wondered why you’d use CBD in your hair care?
There are Cannabidiol essential oils and natural botanicals which supposedly stimulate and enhance the growth of your hair as the main fatty acids (Omega3, Omega6, and Omega9) are absorbed in the scalp. Fatty acids are definitely helpful in moisturizing and nourishing skin and hair.
In my test, the shampoo and conditioner rinsed out easily, so there was little to no residue left on my hair leaving it soft and shiny. It’s been a humid Summer and I think the products also kept the frizz down more than many other shampoo and conditioner combos. Good to know that it’s gentle enough for all hair types and safe for color-treated hair.
The Bottom Line:
The products worked to relieve some of my pain,. Maybe it wasn’t totally pain-free, but the CBD For Life Pain Relief Spray and Roll-On Oil Tropical Pain Relief did reduce my pain easily and quickly in a form that I could use any time I wanted. You can’t do that with prescription pain pills!
