It is no secret that I really love CeraVe skincare products. They are not just affordable and good for all skin types including sensitive skin, they’re effective. But until now, the line didn’t really focus on sun protection. Now, CeraVe, developed by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, is expanding its portfolio with a dedicated line of sun care products. The Advice Sisters couldn’t be happier!
The new CeraVe Sun Care line, developed with dermatologists, includes a of eight products for the face and body, offering both broad spectrum SPF 30 and SPF 50 protection. There are sprays, sticks and lotions in flip-top tubes, and you will be able to find them starting just about now, in drug stores and mass market retailers, nationwide.
To help promote the new line, CeraVe has partnered with USA swimmer Rebecca Soni, six-time Olympic medalist and World Record holder in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke. Soni will serve as the face of the brand in 2013.
One thing I really like about the new CeraVe sun care line is that it includes both physical and chemical sun block options. The importance of this is that some people cannot tolerate one of more ingredients, and require effective alternatives. You may have heard these terms and wondered what they mean.
“Physical” sunscreens use physical UV filters. Physical sunscreens protect your skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun’s rays. “Chemical” sunscreens use chemical UV filters. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the sun’s rays. Some chemical filters can scatter sun rays, but still mostly just absorb them.
There are also hybrid sunscreens that contain both physical and chemical sunscreen actives. Physical sunscreens contain Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and Zinc oxide (ZnO), while Chemical sunscreens usually include a combination of ingredients including: Octylcrylene; Avobenzone; Octinoxate; Octisalate; Oxybenzone; Homosalate; Helioplex and less commonly: 4-MBC; Mexoryl SX and XL; Tinosorb S and M ; Uvinul T 150 and Uvinul A Plus. When you look on the label of any sun screen, you’ll now be able to discern what it is.
SKIN LOVING BENEFITS:
One of the things that sets CeraVe sun screens apart from others, is that all the CeraVe sun screens contain skin-benefits . This includes ceramides to help repair and restore the protective skin barrier, and hyaluronic acid, to hydrate skin and to protect it with antioxidant power.
They also have Niacinamide to actually help your skin produce more ceramides, and fatty acids, essential to repair and restore the skin barrier (and they also help reduce irritation and redness).
That means you’re getting skin care along with sun protection. The products are good for all skin types, with both physical and chemical sun screen options, so there’s something for everyone.
How nifty is that?!
Although I am a fan of spray sun screens, some naysayers believe that it is more difficult to deliver a smooth coating with a spray. But I know the CeraVe SPF 30 and SPF 50 spray sunscreens will be extremely popular, providing broad spectrum protection that can be applied on either wet or dry skin. The lightweight formula is oil-free and water resistant for up to 80 minutes. These sprays are both chemical sunscreens, featuring Avobenzoe, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene and Onybenzone, in different percentages depending upon the level of SPF.
There are sunscreens in SPF 30 and SPF 50 for face and for body, as well, featuring CeraVe’s “Invisible Zinc.” It is clear and a new, highly micronized form of zinc oxide. This technology helps deliver a unique dry, clear finish on the skin, meaning that you won’t end up with that ugly, ashy, white coating that you can sometimes see when you’ve used a sun screen containing zinc.
The SPF 30 lotions for face and for body are both water resistant up to 40 minutes ( the SPF 50 for 80 minute). My only disappointment with these is with the packaging. I wish CeraVe had added a flip-top instead of a screw top that requires two hands to open and close. With a flip top, a mom could handle a squirming kid and the sun screen without having to put the cap down on the sand or perhaps, watch it roll away.
If you ask me which CeraVe sun care line product I like the best for sheer portability and travel-friendly packaging, hands down, it’s the stick of CeraVe Sunscreen SPF 50 that is water resistant for up to 40 minutes, featuring SPF 50 and 6% titanium dioxide, 4.7 % zinx oxide.
The slim and short swivel up stick is really no large than two packs of gum, yet it will pack a punch against the sun’s damaging rays no matter where and when you choose to use it. With no scent and not a trace of sticky feel on the skin, I will never leave home without it in my purse or pocket!

The cost for these sun screens is minimal, but protecting your skin, is priceless. However, even a good sun screen can only do so much. I am still hoping that you, my readers, will still understand that what you can’t see, CAN harm you. If you are going to expose yourself to the sun (and we all must), CeraVe’s new sun protection products are a way to protect yourself inexpensively, and effectively, without fragrance, oil, goo, or unpleasantness.
