As anyone, man, woman or teen, what they’d give up to have straight, non-frizzy hair and they’d probably tell you all sorts of surprising answers from giving up sleep, to giving up their smart phones! Straight, shiny, soft hair is a fashion obsession! But, until recently, you had to go to a salon for a few hours, and pay a wad of cash for a Keratin treatment. Even less pleasant was the fact that some of these treatments use very harsh chemicals–harsh enough to cause real harm to your health. Luckily, lately, there have been some newer, easier and more gentle treatments to handle frizz. There are even a few that you can do at home. While these don’t have quite the same staying power as the more intense, in-salon treatments, they can smooth your hair enough to manage it a lot more easily.
One keratin treatment that’s new and easy to use at home, is by KeratinPerfect. This four step treatment takes only about an hour, and delivers an impressive concentration of pure keratin, safely , without harsh chemicals or ingredients. The do it yourself treatment has an exclusive, Tri-Ionic Keratin Technology, that fuses natural keratin to the hair cuticle, and along with keratin there’s collagen, wheat and soy proteins, and pro-vitamin B5 and Argan oil that all work to actually transform the way hair looks, feels and behaves. ‘
Without getting too technical, the formula produces a powerful keratin compound that helps create additional layers of protein–a good thing for hair! Along with the treatment there are some styling and maintenance products that help make blow-drying faster, styling easier, and that extent the life of the smoothing treatment for all hair types, potentially up to 30 days.
Safety: One of the things that is of great concern to stylists as well as consumers, is the safety of the products. According to KeratinPerfect, the products have undergone rigorous testing to confirm that all products meet and often exceed the stringent chemical guidelines established internationally for cosmetic companies. The smoothing treatment does not break the bonds of the hair and actually make it look smoother and shinier, and feel softer.
HOW-TO: If you have never done a keratin treatment, doing it at home by yourself may seem a bit daunting, but it isn’t really difficult. First you start with clean, washed hair using KeratinPerfect’s Perfect Cleanse Keratin Enhanced shampoo and PerfectSilk Keratin Enhanced Conditioner. Then massage a quarter-sized amount of PerfectPrep Pre-Treatment Clarifying Shampoo throughout wet hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly. Towel-dry hair until damp and gently comb to detangle.
The second phase of the treatment is to shake the Perfector tube well and pump product into palms or directly onto the hair. Don’t use too much (1-3 pumps will do it depending upon the length of your hair). To apply it properly, you need to section your hair, leaving one section down at the back of the neck, and twisting and securing the remaining sections using clips. A section has to be fairly small, maybe about 1/2 inch in thickness, or less (so if you have a lot of hair or it is very long, be prepared to be patient and handle a lot of small sections, one at a time). Starting with the section at the back of the neck, begin applying treatment directly onto the hair. Comb the treatment through each section to evenly distribute. Continue applying the treatment to the entire head, combing through the hair for three minutes (or wait three minutes). Comb away from your face and DO NOT RINSE.
After the product has been on your hair for 10 minutes, you blow dry your hair until completely dry using any brush you wish (the KeratinPerfect waffle vent brush with ceramic & ionic, nano technology is a large, curved, vented paddle that is now one of my favorites). BUT YOU’RE NOT DONE YET!
The last stage, and one that is critical is to flat iron your hair and seal in the keratin treatment. Again, you need to divide your hair into sections and then flat iron 1-inch sections of hair carefully, keeping the iron in constant motion. There are suggested temperatures for different hair types, but all of them do require flat ironing. I loved the KeratinPerfect PerfectLight Deluxe 1.5-Inch Infrared Smoothing Iron but you can use your own if you don’t want to buy a new flat iron. The flat iron heat guidelines are: Damaged, double-processed, bleached, gray or fine hair; full highlights – TEMPERATURE: 350° – 380°F | 3 IRON PASSES ; Color-treated or chemically processed hair, partial highlights – TEMPERATURE: 380° – 400°F | 5 IRON PASSES; Coarse, resistant or virgin hair (not colored or chemically treated) – TEMPERATURE: 400° – 450°F | 7 IRON PASSES. When I did this treatment on my own hair, I opted for 380°. You may not need five passes (your hair will look smooth and shiny when it is sealed) but if you do use that many, your hair gets hot! You can add even more shine and softness after you are done, with PerfectShine Keratin Oil, but you’ll need to wait 48 hours before washing your hair, to let the product “settle.” Wash your hair as infrequently as possible to extend the life of your treatment. If you swim, avoid chlorine and saltwater by wearing a swim cap or coating your hair with PerfectSilk Keratin Enhanced Conditioner or PerfectRenew Daily Keratin Replenishing Spray. The PerfectRenew Daily Keratin Replenishing Spray must be used after shampooing and
conditioning to replenish keratin bonds and maintain your new smooth, frizz-free hair. Treatment results are heat activated. For optimal results, blow-dry with PerfectSmooth Blowout Booster Styling Cream.
What’s in the Kit: The KeratinPerfect 30-Day Hair Smoothing System ($95) includes: 2.5 oz PerfectPrep Pre-Treatment Clarifying Shampoo; 5 oz ThePerfector 30-Day Hair Smoothing Treatment (could be enough for 2-3 full at home treatments depending upon hair length and thickness); 3.4 oz PerfectCleanse Keratin Enhanced Shampoo; 3.4 oz PerfectSilk Keratin Enhanced Conditioner; 3.4 oz PerfectRenew Daily Keratin Replenishing Spray. The Deluxe Edition ($235.00) has everything described plus the a comb, clips and a measuring cup, plus something I really love: the PerfectLight Deluxe 1.5-Inch Infrared advanced digital titanium flat iron ($175.00 if purchased separately). This wide, flat iron has a lighted strip in the middle that I’ve been told actually kills bacteria sitting on the hair, so when you use it on the days you haven’t washed your hair (especially if you’ve been in a place with smoke or other pollutants), the flat iron actually freshens your hair up a bit. It also heats up with a nice, digital display, to 450 degrees!
The bottom line: There are some additional styling products as well but the kit for $95.00 gives you the basics. I just did this treatment a few weeks ago and I don’t know how long it will last, but so far my hair is looking sleeker than usual (the KeratinPerfect Blowout cream is a real help), and easier to flat iron. I’ll add a comment in a month (so come back to the Advice Sisters Web Site and check the “Beauty” category) and I’ll tell you how it worked for me. If I have issues with this treatment, it might be that I already know it’s not going to be as long lasting as an in-salon treatment (those can last over three months), but it’s a whole lot cheaper and faster, and probably safer, too. I also think the novice might worry that s/he is applying too much product or too little. It helped to have someone show me the proverbial ropes. Doubtless someone is going to put their “how to” on video soon enough. You can see my results in the photo and see other results on Facebook.
Who will KeratinPerfect Appeal to Most? It would be a boon to the busy woman who needs faster, easier styling solutions without in-salon issues, or anyone who wants the benefits of a keratin treatment without the cost of a full in-salon keratin treatment, or anyone who just doesn’t want to apply heavy-duty chemicals to their hair. or anyone who hates the smell of chemicals (this treatment doesn’t smell bad). It will also appeal to men who simply won’t go to a salon but who want the same, sleek results as do the ladies.
The KeratinPerfect line retails from $24-$235 and is available exclusively at Sephora stores nationwide and Sephora.com.
