Like many people who have wavy or curly hair, dryness and frizz is a constant companion. So I thought it was time that I addressed issues for folks with curls. What follows is a brief description of some really worthy products. Check out Alterna Textures & Curls, Revlon Frizz Dismiss, and MOP Modern Original Productsl for Chemically Treated and other hair types. It’s time to take a look at these three brands with products made especially for curls, frizzy, and/or textured hair. We wanted to see if they make a difference. Spoiler alert: they do!
Alterna My Hair My Canvas Textures & Curls:
Alterna’s newest collection from My Hair My Canvas (vegan beauty) is called Textures & Curls. It actually enhances the hair’s natural texture and curl. The Texture & Curls line features 5 hair care products specifically created to boost hydration and encourage curls, not frizz.
- Begin Again Curl Cleanser ($30): A cleanser that gently cleanses, improves curl texture and formation, maintains curl pattern, and reduces frizz.
- Begin Again Curl Conditioner ($30): A conditioner that hydrates, detangles, and defrizzes all textures while enhancing definition and form in curls.
- More Butter Masque ($38): A masque that nourishes all textures, reduces frizz, and enhances waves, curls, and coils with long-lasting bounce and shine.
- My Way Curl Defining Gel ($30): A curl-defining gel that is non-greasy and non-flaking, providing a soft but flexible hold and humidity resistance for up to 72 hours.
- Loosen Up Curl Elongator ($32): A masque that nourishes all textures, reduces frizz, and enhances waves, curls, and coils with long-lasting bounce and shine.
What I Tried:
I used the cleanser and conditioner on one test. Then I tried the More Butter Masque on the other. My hair is wavy and results in lots of frizz when air-dried. But with these products, my curls sprang to life. I didn’t even know I had curls like this! And I didn’t do anything but lightly dry my hair and watch the magic happen. Although I prefer my hair to be straight, the curls were soft, wavy, and definitely not frizzy.
I was truly amazed when I used the Begin Again Curl Cleanser, and Conditioner (and the Masque), and my dry hair felt silky and smooth.
What I didn’t Try:
I didn’t really need or use the Loosen Up Curl Elongator and didn’t get the My Way Curl Defining Gel. But these can be really great for those with tighter curls All in all, Alterna once again brings great quality and luxury to haircare. For more information visit the Alterna website
MOP For Curls and More:
When I hear MOP I think of Mother of Pearl, But that is not what this advicesisters.com story is about. This story is about MOP (Modern Original Products for Modern Original People) hair care.
The MOP products advicesisters.com received sound more like a fruit basic than haircare. In the photo above you’ll see Citrus Replenishing Conditioner (the shampoo was in my shower and I forgot to add it to the photo). However, MOP has you covered whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, or textured.
What I Tried:
In full disclosure, I only tested the products that worked for my hair which include the Citrus Replenishing Shampoo and Conditioner (wonderful with a slight citrus scent). The Citrus line is for chemically treated hair. I took that to mean hair that is colored as well as other treatments. Key ingredients include Bergamot fruit, Passionflower, Sesame Proteins, Mango Butter, & Orange Oil. The mop® citrus collection replenishes hair and helps hydrate and strengthen damaged hair, making it especially beneficial for chemically treated hair.
The Mixed Greens Leave-in Conditioner is for hydration for normal to dry hair but really it’s good for all hair types. It also acts as a heat protectant and de-tangler. Key ingredients in the Hydrated & Happy collection which included this leave-in conditioner include hydrating and soothing ingredients: Cucumber, Olive Oil, Rosemary, Apple Cider Vinegar, Jojoba Oil, & Sunflower Oil textured.
Smooth & Polished is another collection featuring frizz-fighting Pomegranate Seed Oil, Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, Neem Oil, & Sea Buckthorn OilPomegranate Nourishing Oil.
Styling Products I Didn’t Try:
I personally don’t use many styling products. However, I can see that the mop® Lemongrass Collection provides an extra volume boost. One of the products in this collection is the Lemongrass Volume Whip. If your hair is fine and/or flat this mousse will give it a lift. I also passed on the Orange Peel Molding Cream. This wax styler had a chemical scent that definitely wasn’t orange.
If your hair is medium to coarse, you will appreciate the mop® pomegranate collection is perfect for nourishing your hair. I liked the Pomegranate Nourishing Oil which is good for all hair types and smells slightly fruity. I added just a bit to the bottom end of my hair to keep frizz down. It did! for more information visit https://mopproducts.com/
Fabulous Frizz Dismiss by Redken:
I have been a fan of Redken hair care products for many many years. I remember when they launched Frizz Dismiss in 2015. More than just the packaging has changed. It’s a sulfate and sodium chloride-free formula. Redken’s Smoothing Complex with sustainably-sourced babassu oil for enhanced smoothness & frizz control. I can’t tell if the scent is vanilla or slightly floral, but it’s subtle and pleasant.
Spray Smooth is new, and it’s a nifty heat-protective shine and anti-frizz product that smooths your strands without weighing them down. It also helps to protect against humidity so frizz won’t be welcomed back into your hair. The ultra-fine mist has a subtle fresh scent. It is suggested that you use it with your blow dryer or flat iron. However, you can add a little to the palm of your hand and smooth it through your semi-dry hair if you so desire.
Redken has so many different collections both for cleansing and also for styling. You’ve just got to love Redken. I love their pro products for salons, too. For more information and to see all they offer consumers, visit https://www.redken.com/
