I received a very impressive bottle of Dewar’s new 2023 limited edition 19-year-old scotch whisky as a suggestion for Father’s Day. But no matter what gender you identify with, or the occasion, this is a scotch you’ll want to try. This special bottle would be the perfect gift idea for your Summer weekend hosts or as a treat for yourself. The packaging is a matte silver carton with LAACC 123rd US Open on the box and the bottle. It was made in honor of the 123rd US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club (LACC). It’s a collector’s item, but I’m willing to bet after you read this, you’ll want to taste it!
For the Love of Scotch!
As I mentioned in a previous story on advicesisters.com from 2017, my personal appreciation for scotch goes way back to my days in public relations. I had to entertain many clients, mostly men who were enthusiastic drinkers. But I had to go back to work and didn’t want anything I couldn’t just sip. I also knew that (back then) most women didn’t drink scotch. I knew I’d impress those male clients. And yes, I did! I always ordered Dewar’s. Over the years, it has always been one of my favorites. And, as times have changed, I’ve seen plenty of women who are scotch aficionados.
Dewar’s Special Edition Scotch:
What is a Blended Scotch?
This is a blended scotch, crafted by Dewar’s award-winning Master Blender, Stephanie Macleod, and aged in Red Wine casks from Napa Valley. Many people think single malk scotch is better, but I’ve had plenty of them. It’s what your tastebuds prefer. Blended scotch, as its name implies, is made from a blend of two or more scotch whiskies from different distilleries.
Dewar’s Tasting Notes:
I just read and reviewed a fascinating book by Master Taster Mandy Naglich called How to Taste (check out our Summer 2023 Book Review). According to Naglich, your experiences and what you were fed in the womb, as a baby, and upwards, change your experience of what you taste and whether you like it or not. So it’s up to you to discover what makes this scotch different. However, the Dewar’s tasting notes are as follows: “Notes of red berries, black cherries, and a hint of nutmeg results in a smooth and complex flavor that resolves with a rich and fruity finish.”
My scotch of choice is usually Dewar’s 12 which is a little more robust and smooth than regular Dewar’s white label. It’s aged in bourbon barrels. This 19-year-old version is older, of course, and has been aged in wine bottles for a different finish. I smell the fruits but there is always a bit of warmth and smokiness to scotch
Smell and Taste:
One way to get a true sense of scotch is to smell it. Dip your (clean) fingers into your glass and drop some of the scotch on your palms. Rub them together and then open and sniff! You really get a sense of what’s in the liquid. Of course, you can also just swirl the scotch in the glass and sniff it that way.
This is a super-sipper with or without ice. However, if you’re going to use ice, one of those large iceballs will be the way to go as they melt more slowly and won’t water down the scotch.
Personalize It:
To make the bottle even more special for dad, Dewar’s will customize a label for a bottle of their 12, 15, 18, and 19 Year Old bottles for free. That’s awesome!
Dewar’s 19 Championship Edition 2023 750ML has an SRP: of $79.99.
Due to the free label personalization, I would go directly to the Dewar’s website, but you can find it in other places as well.
