An “anthology” is a collection of artistic or scholarly works, usually chosen by the compiler or the artist. According to Wikipedia, “the word derives from the Greek word for garland — or bouquet of flowers — which was the title of the earliest surviving anthology, assembled by Meleager of Gadara.” For Designers Dolce & Gabbana, the term describes a collection — a wardrobe if you will–of five, fragrances that answer the fundamental human questions: “Who am I? Who do I want to be?”.
The obvious answer is: You can be anyone you want to be To express this in scent, is a challenging task that prompted Dolce & Gabbana to design fragrances they feel capture the essence of five eternal dramatis personae: The provocative “1 Le Bateleur” ; the irrepressible “3 L’Impératrice;” sensual “6 L’Amoureux;” daring “10 La Roue de la Fortune”; and hypnotizing “18 La Lune.” If you’re wondering why the fragrances are not simply numbered 1-5 it’s because they are named also by the tarot card that inspired the scent.
The stark, white cartons with elegant, modern, matte, black lettering look chic and simple, as does the classic, clear, rectangular 3.3 fl. oz Eau De Toilette Spray bottle unadorned except for a square, white label with black lettering, and a black, ribbed, round cap over the black spray diffuser. The color is added by the tint of the juice: sky blue for 1 Le Bateleur; blush pink for 3 L’Imperatrice; limpid green for 6 L’Amoureux; soft violet for 10 La Roue de la Fortune; and pale yellow for 18 La Lune. Both man and woman would be happy to have one of these (or more than one) on their dresser.
Here’s a rundown on the fragrances. They are all intriguing blends that will be fun to try and fun to wear. Some of these scents are directed towards men, and some towards women. But we all have a masculine and a feminine side, don’t we? These scents express your many facets. You can experiment with these, mixing and layering for all the different personalities you are, or want to project:
I personally tried just one : The sensual personality “6 L’Amoureux;” Funny I picked one of the fragrances that seem to be directed towards men–but I like it! It really doesn’t smell “macho” just nice when it blended with my skin temperature! The first sniff is very fresh–quite fruity, but very quickly it softens to include the spices and sensual musky notes of the heart and base to be a spicy/woodsy delight. Although it isn’t a heavy scent, the spices and woods make it masculine, but not so much both men and women couldn’t share it. The top notes are: Bergamot, Juniper Berry and Pink Pepper, with a heart of: Cardamom,Birch Leaf, and one of my favorite notes–Orris Root. The sensual base is made up of musky notes. It is just the type of fragrance I really like — one that will adapt to you and your body chemistry to make it something special, something precious, and something you won’t smell on everyone else.
The other scents are:
LE BATELEUR – Aromatic top notes, yielding to an aquatic heart, on a cedarwood and
vetyver base. Dominant and distinctive, resolutely direct, Le Bateleur is an accomplished
Mediterranean seducer. Notes: TOP : Cardamom, Juniper, Berry, Birch Leaf HEART: Aquatic accord, Coriander BASE: Vetyver, White Cedarwood, Olibanum
3 L’IMPÉRATRICE – Succulent exotic fruits and bright pink florals give way to a musky,
appetite-arousing base. L’Impératrice life is a movie and she is its heroine. All heads turn when
she enters a room. Notes: TOP: Rhubarb,Red Currant,Juicy Kiwi Accord HEART: Pink Cyclamen,Fresh Watermelon Accord,Jasmine Petal BASE: Musky Notes,Sandalwood,Grapefruit Wood
10 LA ROUE DE LA FORTUNE – A lavish tuberose, gardenia, and jasmine heart sets aloft a daring benzoin and patchouli base. Adventurous and creative – the epitome
of surprise! Notes: TOP: Pink Pepper,Green Notes, Pineapple HEART: Tuberose, Gardenia,
Jasmine BASE: Vanilla, Orris,Benzoin, Patchouli
18 LA LUNE – Hypnotizing white florals nestle against an intriguing base of the
softest, most exquisite pale leather. An envelopingly hypnotic lily and tuberose heart rests upon a textured base of sandalwood, musk, orris, and white leather. The Dreamer: La Lune is a perfect enigma: fresh yet sensual, dazzling yet forever retaining her secrets. Notes:
TOP: Apple, Bergamot, Green Accord, HEART: Lily, Rose, Tuberose BASE: Orris, Leather, Sandalwood, Musk
The advertising features celebrity models from the 90’s posed tastefully “nude” : Claudia Schiffer portrays 18 La Lune; Eva Herzigova, is the face of 10 La Roue de la Fortune. Naomi Campbell is an inspired choice for 3 L’Impératrice. Noah Mills is the “Greek god” of Eros of 6 L’Amoureux, and Tyson Ballou portrays the personality of 1 Le Bateleur.
