Are you going to a wedding or a family gathering and you haven’t shopped for a dress in over a year? Your loungewear isn’t going to work. Fortunately, casual clothing is trending. By casual I don’t mean sweats or jeans. I’ve found these dresses from Sarah Liller that are great when you want to dress up a bit. However, you can accessorize to fancy them up as well. Show your personality with accessories by @payless and @Bellefixe. You’ll be ready for whatever comes your way, and won’t break your budget into smithereens!
Sarah Liller Dresses:
I love the dresses by Sarah Liller because they are so so versatile. There are so many, and I wish I had them all. They can be accessorized for casual wear, dinner dates, but you could wear these if you’re a wedding guest with the appropriate shoes and jewelry. Each dress is stretchy, travel-friendly and so comfy. You won’t miss wearing your sweats at all.
Sarah Liller’s designs are made in classic shapes that flatter everybody. Although there is no XL, the sizes range from XS- to Large. The fabrics are stretchy, so if you’re between sizes they are still flattering. Every piece of Sarah Liller is ethically produced in downtown San Francisco. The fabrics are sustainably sourced and it’s a 100% woman-owned company. Even better, all of the clothing is all under $200.
Gabby Dress, For Any Occasion:
If you need an all-purpose dress that you can wear to a wedding reception, travel, date night, or just for your next Zoom conference, the Gabby Dress is it! It’s an ankle-length (or maxi if you’re short like me) dress available in a heather grey or a washed black.
The fabric is slightly ribbed 92%Rayon 8%Lycra and it’s very stretchy and forgiving. This dress is a simple style, but it even has pockets! At $178 it’s the one you’ll reach for again and again. All it needs is accessories to glam it up or keep it casual. The Top photo shows how the Gabby Dress looks on a model. I don’t have a photographer. I hope with these selfies you’ll get an idea of the real way these dresses looked on me.
For casual wear add a belt or tie on a colorful scarf to add a pop of color, You can accentuate your waist with a scarf, too. To dress it up use this simple dress as a canvas and wear statement jewelry and strappy sandals or wear silver or gold shoes as in my photo on the left.
You can easily layer this dress with a jean jacket or long cardigan for travel. The smooth scoop neck and 1/2 length sleeves make it great for any season. The Gabby Dress is made in the USA and can be machine washed or hand wash in cold water. Roll it up and put it in your suitcase or backpack and you’ll be ready for dinner, right off the plane, train, bus, or car!
The Josie Dress
I selected the Sarah Liller Josie Dress for a short, sleeveless option because it comes in a wide variety of colors and like the Gabby dress, it can be dressed up or down. Wear it to a party with colorful or blingy sandals. Spend the day shopping wearing it with sneakers (the retro high tops from LA Gear are below). You can even wear it as a beach coverup and then out to dinner if you like to pack light.
The Josie Dress (srp. $158) comes in navy and white stripes, or choose solid black, yellow, navy, chambray blue, marine blue. It is really the perfect go-to dress for just about any occasion. I mean any occasion. My choice was the navy striped version which is cute and casual. However, it might not the best choice if you’re not really thin. I wish I’d selected a solid!
The model in this photo is 5’8″ and her measurements are 34-26-36. She is wearing a size small and looks more like a mini dress on her. However, I’m 5′ 2/12″ and my Josie dress fits almost the knee. I’ll probably get some more of these in other colors. There are two pockets and a forgiving shape. The fabric is stretchy and comfortable.
What I love about the Josie dress is its versatility, just like the Gabby dress, you can accessorize it high or low end, fancy or for shopping. The Josie dress is fitted through the bust but flows through the hips. It’s forgiving without looking voluminous. I want more of Sarah Liller’s designs. Retro Kicks From Payless:
Everyone knows that Payless has trendy styles for a lot less. But for a fun and trendy retro look, I paired my Josie Dress with LA Gear Womens Boogie Retro High Tops from Payless ($40) These are a definite nod to the ’90’s but these days sneakers of all types are even being seen on red carpets and fashion runways. These high tops give you the look, along with the comfort of sneakers. I thought I’d give them a try, too!
The PU material is lightweight which I like because if you’re not doing athletics, it’s better not to be weighted down in the heat. But in addition to being fashionable, LA Gear‘s supported high-top fit gives you a secure footing for whatever it is that you are doing. The all-white sneaker with silver accents has both laces and a velcro closure to make the fit adjustable to your preferences.
I’ve never worn a hightop sneaker before. Some people wear these without socks, but they really felt a lot better with socks covering my ankles. It’s up to you. So many celebs are wearing sneakers even with evening gowns. But I think they look super cute with a short dress or skirt, or definitely, shorts!
Payless just opened a store in North Miami, and hopefully they’ll be coming back with more. Meanwhile, you can buy all sorts of brands from one of my comfort favorites (aerosoles) to clothing, accessories and much more. For more information visit Payless
Hair Jewelry From Bellefixe:
I’m skipping over actual jewelry (see advicesisters.com stories for inspo), but hair jewelry is a must, especially if you’re still wearing a mask.
We are publishing a big story on the newest Bellefixe collections on June 4th. These photos are just a tempting peek at what you’ll find so be sure to check in (or sign up for email posts to your in-box–see the RH side of this page).
