One way to help keep your skin (and eyes) safe and look trendy and cute every day, is with a fabulous hat. And one company that excels in the area of hats that are stylish and fun but also provides serious sun protection is Wallaroo Hats. Their hats for men, women, and children are known for a UPF5o+ rating with fabrics woven in such a way that they block out 97.5% of the sun’s UV light.
How I Met Stephanie and Lenya of the Wallaroo Hat Company
I first learned about Wallaroo at an editor’s event, and then I attended the amazing Headwear Association’s Annual Dinner a gala event at the Central Park Boathouse. This organization is 106-years old, and their mission is the promote hats and the headwear industry throughout the world.
I was given an amazing hat to wear, and I felt like a princess the entire night! Hats transform you. They really are an easy way to accessorize, not to mention away to deal with a bad hair day.
I was also fortunate to be seated with the creators of the Wallaroo Hat Company, Stephanie Carter and Lenya Shore. They told me that that the Wallaroo Hat Company was located in Boulder Colorado. My husband is from Boulder, so I have a soft spot for this beautiful area where people spend a lot of time outdoors in every season. However, Boulder has a high altitude and the exposure to UV and the sun’s damaging rays is pretty intense.
Stephanie and Lenya discovered colorful UPF 50+ crushable fabric hats in Australia and began wearing them around Boulder. Demand quickly grew, they began importing small quantities and their company was born!
Wallaroo Hats Have the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation
You will love Wallaroo Hats because of their wide range of styles that make a fashion statement. But the main point of this feature on advicesisters.com is that many if not all are recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. When you get your hat you’ll see a hang tag on it with the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.
To earn the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation, a manufacturer must provide scientific data showing that its product sufficiently and safely “aids in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin.”
A committee of photobiologists who are experts in the study of the interaction between UV radiation and the skin reviews the data. The product must have score an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 or higher and for hats they must have a minimum brim width of 3 ” or wider.
An “On-Trend”Hat That Has UPF 50+ and More
Fedoras are so trendy for both men and women. You can’t walk down the street without seeing one on a majority of hipsters heads.
I selected the Wallaroo Hat Fedora Victoria (VICF-20) because this hat lets you wear that trend, protects you from the sun with all of the Skin Cancer Foundation recommendation requirements and more is totally cute!
But it’s not just cute. It’s also travel-friendly — crushable and packable so you can take it on your next vacation and not worry about whether or not there will be room in the always over-stuffed overhead compartments for it. If you’ve ever taken a long trip with a hat on your lap, you already know it’s not all that pleasant!
At just $40.00 the Victoria Fedora is affordable and is available in six colors: white, black, tan (available in Jan. 2017), mixed camel, natural, and the color I selected called suede, a coffee/cocoa-bean brown that is dark enough for cooler months
This women’s fedora has a 3″ brim and matching cord trim. The fabric is UPF 50+ . You can crush it, smoosh it and stuff it in a tote and it will still come out looking good. The model looks so cute! *Note that I’m not showing myself in the photo because I don’t have a face meant for hats, but it looks ok, even on me!
Another nice touch is the internal drawstring on Wallaroo one-size-fits-all hats. The inner string adjusts the fit and it keeps the hat securely on your head on a windy day. No one likes to go sailing or sit on someone’s back porch in a stiff breeze with one hand occupied by holding their hat on their head! The fabric is a soft 100% poly-straw with cotton lining. that you can spot-clean.
The Wallaroo Hat Sierra: Ride Em Cowgirl and Keep the Sun Off Your Skin!
The Advice Sisters also selected the Wallaroo Sierra because everyone looks good in a Western hat, but the Sierra (SIE-24) is better by far, because it is travel-friendly and crushable, one size fits all, and it brings a modern (read: more urban) Western style to a sun hat in a (100% paper braid exclusive of trim) .
The interest in this UPF 50+ fabric is three shades of brown woven together in either a mixed brown color (our choice to review) or a natural color. To make it modern, the hat has an accent of three large plastic “horn” chain links tied on with a thin leather cord. The western-style brim is 3-1/4″ and shapeable. This hat also offers an internal
This hat also offers an internal drawstring to adjust the fit. Amazingly, it’s just $48.00.
Wallaroo Hats Are Approved By the Melanoma International Foundation
When we received our review sample of the Wallaroo Sierra it had a hang tag on it stating this hat was approved by the Melanoma International Foundation (it also meets the criteria of the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.
To earn that seal a product must validate it is effective in preventing sun damage to the skin or eyes. The manufacturer must provide scientific testing data from an independent laboratory – a separate entity from the manufacturer.
The seal is provided to products that demonstrate high quality as as with sunscreen lotion, sun protective clothing, shading devices such as umbrellas, awnings, and other complimentary sun protective products.
We are so impressed with these hats! They’re not just for the sun or the beach, they’re hats you can wear every day to work, for play, sports, anywhere. You can find Wallaroo Hats in a wide variety of stores, and online, but do go to the Wallaroo Hat Web Site first and check out all the styles for the entire family.
