A gift of fragrance is a personal and lovely gift. We have definitely reviewed a gazillion fragrances on advicesisters.com (see our fragrance category). It is important to know what scents you like, but even more important when choosing festive fragrances for someone else (Read: “How To Ace Choosing A Fragrance for Yourself or Someone Else” Here are some fragrances I love for you to consider for holiday 2023. Smell fabulous yourself, and gift great fragrances!
How to Choose?
If the person you’re buying for already has a favorite fragrance, you can check out the notes of that fragrance. One of my favorite sites to learn more bout fragrances is Fragrantica. But if you’re not sure what they’d like, their personality and lifestyle can give you some clues. Are they laid back and casual? A light, fresh, or fruity scent or a body spray (instead of an Eau de Parfum) might be great for them. But if they’re sophisticated ditch the fruity florals and find something more exotic, but not too heavy. Are they a stressed-out Type A? Consider that stress intensifies body heat so maybe give them a layering set so they can pick and choose how they are feeling that day. People who love flowers tend to like floral scents. Younger people like gourmand and fruity florals that are understandable. These are just some very basic suggestions.
Kierin Has NYC Inspired Sophisticated Scents:
When Kierin launched its first collection of fragrances in 2018 I was so excited about them on advicesisters.com (see the story). Their bottles are works of art and nicely presented in white hard-sided boxes. Inside the bottles, festooned with graffiti art are fragrances that are vegan and cruelty-free, with no toxins, and free of skin allergens, parabens, and phthalates. Of course, the products are made from sustainable materials. If you are seeking a fragrance for a vegan, (or anyone), you can’t do any better than choosing one of Kiern’s sophisticated scents.
It’s been a while since I have sniffed a new fragrance from Kierin, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love them (because I do). Fortunately, I got back in touch with Kierin. They sent me Santal Park. KIERIN’s CEO and founder Mona Maine de Biran is the “nose” behind this clean beauty scent.
Santal Park is a scent that is kind of an homage to sunny days spent in a cultivated, city rooftop garden. Even if you’re not an urban person, you probably know of a special spot, a little oasis of calm and green, someone in your area. It smells fresh and green. The key ingredients are Sandalwood, Gardenia, Saffron, and Oak Moss. I initially smelled spicey notes but really, there is a freshness to it (alluding to a green oasis in an urban setting). This is one of those beautiful festive fragrances for everyone to love.
This beautifully packaged fragrance is $132 for 3.7 fl. oz. While it might be a little more than some of the other fragrances I’m suggesting, it is something special that you won’t smell on everyone else. Be prepared for compliments and that “what are you wearing?” query. Don’t tell them if you don’t want to share! Visit https://kierin-nyc.com/
Tocca’s Lucia Fragrance is Lovely:
I visited Tocca with some Editors years ago, and I have been enchanted by their scents ever since!
Tocca Lucia is Tocca’s latest and greatest new fragrance. The Top notes are Sea Notes, Lemon, Grapefruit, and Mandarin Orange; the middle notes are Fig, Geranium, Fig Tree, and Rose Water; the base notes are Cedarwood, Fig Tree, Vetiver, and Tobacco. Lucia is about living in the moment. The main accords are interesting. They are woody and aromatic, but also fresh in the mid notes. Then the finish includes tobacco and spice. But it isn’t overbearing.
I’ve been doing a lot of traveling lately, so I really appreciate it when a high-quality brand like Tocca offers a travel-sized fragrance spray (.68 fl. oz.)
Once the fragrance is on your skin for a while (the drydown) the scent still feels fresh even though there is still spice to it. Tocca says it is a “luminous fig fragrance .” I’m unsure if I get the analogy as I don’t think I’ve ever sniffed a fig! But that is beside the point. This is Tocca’s fragrance and Tocca gets to say what the intent is. To my nose, it reminds me of Cipriani’s famed bar in Venice or a seaside table on the Amalfi Coast. It’s not overpowering, but while it’s light enough for daytime, it can transition to evening. And, I love that it does last on my skin. You certainly can purchase the full bottle ($132/2oo ml) but the travel bottle (20 ml/$46) I received will still last for a long while. Visit https://www.tocca.com/
Three Terrific Sets from FragranceNet.com
FragranceNet.com is one of my favorite websites for finding fragrances. They seem to have everything and are a reliable place to purchase. By that, I mean that their fragrances are not “old” or poorly stored. They are also authentic. You know what you are getting and there are no surprises (other than great prices). For the holidays, FragranceNet.com sent advicesisters.com three sets for you to consider that are affordable and nicely boxed for gifting.
Jimmy Choo Fragrance Set:
One way to ensure that your recipient gets fragrances they love is with a set of them. Jimmy Choo is beloved for pricey shoes, but Jimmy Choo also has elegant fragrances. This nicely boxed set has five Jimmy Choo fragrances in their original style bottles and even in the outer cartons–just mini-sized!
The Jimmy Choo Miniatures Collection features an elegant hard-sided, light mauve box with a gold Jimmy Choo” logo. Inside are: Jimmy Choo Eau De Parfum & Fever Eau De Parfum & L’Eau Eau De Toilette & Illicit Eau De Parfum & Illicit Flower Eau De Toilette. These are all 0.15 oz Minis with faceted bottles and they’re so cute. Each bottle has a plastic stopper inside to keep the fragrance, fresh. There is just enough fragrance in each flacon to sample it more than a couple of times. I am holding my favorite Jimmy Choo scent, the Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum (Warm, elegant, fruity). It fits into the palm of my hand! On FragranceNet.com I found it for just $37.79 it’s a great way to try out Jimmy Choo’s fragrances.
Perry Ellis 360 Fragrance Set:
When I think of the late designer, Perry Ellis, I think of sportswear but also fragrance. The Perry Ellis brand began in the mid-1970s. This Perry Ellis 360 collection for women features a lovely gold hard-sided box (definitely re-useable for all sorts of things) and three fragrances with colorful tops: Each bottle is a 1 fl. oz spray. But what’s remarkable is the price – on FragranceNet.com just $24.56! It’s almost too good to be true (but it is true)! the fragrances are: Perry Ellis 360 Eau De Toilette, Perry Ellis 360 Coral Eau De Parfum, and Perry Ellis 360 Purple Eau De Parfum.
I liked all of these, but I really liked the Perry Ellis 360 Eau de Parfum because it’s not a typical fruity or floral. It is billed as a Floral Aldehyde fragrance for women. If you aren’t sure what this means, it is a blending of white floral notes with synthetic molecules –think Chanel No. 5. It is hard to define the scent but still, I can’t stop smelling it!
The top notes are Aldehydes, Fruity Notes, Pineapple, Violet, and Bergamot; the middle notes are Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Jasmine, Geranium, Lily-of-the-Valley, and Orris Root; the base notes are oak moss, Amber, Civetta, Vetiver, Musk, Sandalwood and Virginia Cedar. The other two fragrances are also interesting. Coral is very fruity while Purple is also a fruity floral, but a bit softer. There’s something for everyone in this set. It’s so affordable I wouldn’t suggest breaking it up, but the 1 oz. bottles each on its own would make a nice stocking stuffer.
Versace Bright Crystal Fragrance Set:
Somewhere above I mentioned layering. I love the option to start in the shower with a scented body wash, followed by body lotion and then a spritz of fragrance. Layering also helps to keep your fragrance lasting, longer. I have reviewed Versace fashion and fragrances in the past on advicesisters.com This absolutely gorgeous gift set is Versace Bright Crystal. Versace is a designer famous for extravagant, colorful designs and you can see that in the bright pink outer sleeve bedecked with jeweled starfish and seashells. Pull off that sleeve and there is a hard-sided presentation box with the same print! The box itself is definitely a keeper. But what’s inside is the main thing. The set includes a large 3 oz. bottle of the fragrance, a mini-me .017 oz. bottle and two 3.4 oz. flip-top tubes of Body Lotion and shower gel.
The fragrance is fruity floral but an interesting one. The top notes are Yuzu, Pomegranate, and Ice; the middle notes are Peony, Lotus, and Magnolia; the base notes are Musk, Mahogany, and Amber. The nose (perfumer) that created Versace Bright Crystal (in 2006) is Alberto Morillas. The Top notes are Yuzu, Pomegranate, and Ice; the middle notes are Peony, Lotus, and Magnolia; the base notes are Musk, Mahogany, and Amber.
This beautifully presented set is just a little over $85 so you get a lot of scent for your “cents. The fragrance bottle has a faceted top like an oval pink diamond and a pretty, tapered flacon you’ll want to show off! Even the little mini is styled the same as the actual bottle. The fragrance is light and youthful. Anyone of any age can wear it, especially adults who want something fun to wear on a daily basis that isn’t too intense. SO Barbie, SO pink, SO gorgeous!
