Beautiful brows are big this season and they’ll be even bigger, judging from the fuss makeup artists made over them on Spring 2011 Fashion Week runways. If you are in New York City, you will want to consider visiting Hibba!
About Hibba Kapil
Hibba Kapil is a brow expert, with a pretty and cozy salon tucked away in Soho. I was stuck on the subway and got there late, but despite my tardiness, I was warmly greeted, offered something to drink, and made to feel very welcome.
Although Hibba didn’t want me to photograph her, she is a beautiful young woman. As a girl, starting as early as age 14, Hibba worked in the beauty business, and then when she arrived in the United States, she went to beauty school and college.
Nine months or so ago, she opened her own, tiny studio at 448 West Broadway, tucked away on the 2nd floor of a modest building, in the midst of Soho’s glittering shops.

Although Hibba’s studio has all sorts of hair removal services, Hibba’s forte is brows. She tells me that is what she likes to do best. She knows what type of brow shape will be flattering, and will do her best to help you leave looking great.
What a Gift!

Hibba” means “gift” and Ms. Kapil definitely has a gift for hair removal and for making beautiful brows. I had never experienced brow shaping with threading before, but Hibba prefers to use threading to wax, which she says often goes on too thick to be controlled well. Clearly, threading takes skill and practice. While some brow experts will just go to work on your face, without asking what you want, Hibba didn’t.
She made a suggestion about what she thought would work with my bone structure, eyes, etc. I knew she’d make my brows neat and natural, but before Hibba used a pencil to mark where she thought my brows should be shaped, she asked, and waited for my approval before she did anything more. I appreciated that a great deal.
Do It Quick!
Hibba’s competent hands quickly shaped my brows (just a bit) and while the sensation was strange, as if someone was tugging on the hair on my brows, it was fast, and not uncomfortable. It’s amazing what you can do with simple, cotton thread (if you know what you’re doing). Threading simply takes a piece of natural cotton thread that is twisted (to create a “lasso”), and Hibba uses this thread shape as a guide, so she gets the results she expects. Another benefit to threading, besides the fact that it doesn’t use any products other than a simple thread, is that it helps reduce and avoid ingrown hairs and irritation. As someone with sensitive skin, usually my skin is red and irritated from waxing. But I can definitely attest to the fact that my first experience with threading left no irritation whatsoever. It’s truly a “green” way to go, too!’ Of course, I had the confident hands of a master working on me. I wouldn’t want to try this at home or with someone who wasn’t an expert. Hibba does also offer sugaring and waxing with all-natural wax to remove hair virtually anywhere you wish it to be gone.
After threading was completed (which took only minutes), Hibba also did a relaxing, mini massage of my temples, and followed that with a cool cloth to keep down redness (but I saw and felt almost none anyway, especially compared to waxing and tweezing). She says the problem she sees most often is women who have over-tweezed their brows in their teens, and now, of course, now they’re stuck with the damage. She says she wishes mothers would bring their daughters to a brow expert so they learn what to do, before they start taking matters into their own hands.
She added a teeny bit of brow color, but just a touch. The end result was beautiful brows! Great brows frame your face, make your eyes look brighter and wider, and are part of your overall look.
Hibba’s web site, http://www.hibbabeauty.com/ shows you the services and packages that are available. Being at Hibba was a welcome respite in an otherwise busy and annoying day. I really didn’t want to leave and I recommend Hibba, highly. Remember: there is no excuse for scruffy brows!
