TRESemmé is very universal! I am making this statement because TRESemme really does have a dizzying selection of hair care and styling products that can meat just about everyone’s need. To break it down, “TRES” from the French means “Very”, ’emme” from the German means “universal.” So TRESemmé literally means: “very universal.” I’m not sure that this is what the company had in mind or not, but when I thought about it, I realized that these user friendly and affordable products really do have literally, universal appeal.
Well, so much for playing “what’s in a name.” Now, let’s get to why I wrote this and why you are reading it — TRESemmé has come out with some nifty newbies this year, and I think you’ll want to know about them.
There are times in life when even if you take good care of your hair and scalp, you can find that both need a little more TLC than usual,. The new TRESemmé Renewal Hair & Scalp Shampoo and Conditioner (there is also a Conditioning mask and Conditioning leave in spray) launched in January 2014. The shampoo and conditioner arrive in larger than usual bottle quantities (25 fl. oz.) with flip top lids. They’re the size you might find in a salon, and I wasn’t surprised to see the tag line “used by professionals” on this Expert Selectionsproduct line. Renewal features tea tree extract and sunflower seed oil that work to treat surface signs of hair damage, but at the same time, nourishes the scalp at the surface cellular level (aka the “stratum corneum”).
Just as an FYI, so you don’t think I’m flinging scientific terms from a press release at you, the stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and it consists of dead cells. It forms a barrier to protect the underlying tissue from such things as infection, dehydration and chemicals. There is a lot more to know about the stratum corneum, but for the purposes of reviewing hair care, it’s most important to know that you want to keep your scalp in balance, and healthy. The tea tree oil mixed with ginseng, and the sunflower seed oil help to nourish the scalp and keep it feeling good, but still keep hair soft and manageable.
The conditioner has siicones that are different from regular TRESemmé conditioners that provide extra conditioning but aren’t too heavy. If your scalp is itchy but you don’t have a dandruff problem, this conditioner seems to be a good fit, but if you want a similar effect but with a lighter touch, try the spray that you leave in, but it’s not quite as emollient and still leaves hair feeling soft and shiny (or use both of them). For MORE conditioning, use the Mask three times a week instead of the regular conditioner. Leave on 3-4 minutes then wash out. “Renewal” is a good word for the results. My hair and scalp felt somehow, “cleansed” and my hair was soft, without any itchiness, flaking or other issues. I might not use this every shampoo, but I’d rotate it with others, including the new TRESemmé 7 Day Keratin Smooth shampoo and conditioner.
When someone cries, my hair frizzes, so imagine how bad it can get in humid climates! But TRESemmé 7 Day Keratin Smooth is a new line of products that really does seem to help, and for just a few dollars a product. This is a non-damaging smoothing system that lasts through a number of washes (I tried it, and it did last for days). The products use Thermal Technology that is activated by the heat of your flat iron (and I tried the shampoo and conditioner with just a blow dryer and got good results, too). You can go to a salon and get a pricey keratin treatment, but this gave me similar results and while they didn’t last as long as a salon treatment, they didn’t cost me hundreds of dollars and hours of my time, either. The products are infused with Keratin and made with lower sulfates.
I started with just the 7 Day Keratin Smooth Shampoo and the 7 Day Keratin Smooth Conditioner, just to see how the products would work. I didn’t even use a flat iron and I was still satisfied. For smoother hair, you really should also use the Heat Activated Treatment ($6.99) that bonds to the hair cuticle (as you use your flat iron or heat styler) to keep hair smooth and frizz-resistant up to a week and even if you wash a couple of times. This product does leave a bit of a coating on your hair, but it’s the good kind, to keep hair smooth. There is also a keratin smoothing serum ($4.99) which I think is really more of a stand-lone stylng proeduct (see my view in “styling products” below). These products are also safe for color treated hair (some keratin treatment you get in salons are not safe for chemically-altered hair, or you have to wait a few weeks before having the treatment).
Style like a pro!
If you like to try different looks, you need to use the right styling products, but who wants to spend a fortune for products you don’t use all that often? Here are some of the trendiest styles, and what the pros used to make the look happen. All of the products work well and most of them are under $5.00 so you can experiment. My favorite products are the TRESemmé Fresh Start Color Care Dry Shampoo ($4.99) that launched in January 2014 and the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Illuminating Shine Spray ($4.99) that adds shine and smooths hair. The fresh smelling dry shampoo product won’t take the place of a really good cleansing, but it will remove some oil and odors, getting you through one more day (or date) when you just don’t have time to wash and re-style your hair.
The Illuminating Shine Spray is just a little “bell & whistle” that you can add as a finishing touch on hair that looks frizzy, dull or dry. You’ll get shine, and it will smooth your frazzled strands so you look like you really worked hard on making your hair just perfect. For more “oomph” try the Keratin Smoothing Serum ($4.99) to protect your (dry or damp) hair prior to heat styling. Just a little bit makes hair easier to manage for sleek styles. The TRESemme claim is that it will do so up to 48 hours, and so far, I can’t help but nod my head in agreement. Both of these Keratin Smooth products work best when you use them with the shampoo and conditioner in the line, but for those with minimal frizz issues, one or both of these styling products alone will produce good results.
