Anyone who reads my beauty reviews and columns regularly knows that I have had a love/hate relationship with self tanning products. Mostly, it’s not love that I feel, when I am promised I’ll look “sun kissed” and instead, I look like I’ve had sunstroke, as my normally ruddy skin is now the color of bricks, or pumpkins. I know it’s not entirely the fault of the self-tanners, since I never tan but only turn a less than glamorous shade of reddish pink. Still, I long for a product that will turn me a credible, light, sun-kissed “tan” and that is safe, effective, affordable, and pleasant to use.
Starting from the latter, Jergens has some new products that not only let you gradually, safely and afford ably get the tan of your dreams, but (let me get right to the point), doesn’t smell bad, either! The entire Jergens® Natural Glow collection has been re-formulated to remove the sunless tanner odor. You know, that chemical scent that sticks around on your skin and doesn’t smell good? Yes, that one! And, of course, if someone admires your “tan” and comes up closer, they can smell your secret, so don’t try and tell them you got bronzed in San Tropez. The chemical smell of self-tanner used to give that, away! Simply stated, not sexy!
The problem is (or used to be) that self tanners start to smell bad when the product interacts with skin, as a result of the reaction that delivers natural-looking color. The Jergens team spent 7 years researching and developing a solution to the problem (but it will take you only 2-10 days to get tan with it), and you might be surprised how they did it. You might think that the solution would normally be to simply mask the scent. Instead, they found a way to block the receptors in the nose that pick up the malodor, effectively helping to prevent you from experiencing the smell that comes along with applying color enhancing formulas. And they didn’t stop there. They also created the re-formulated self tanners with odor-absorbing materials that further reduce the smell associated with sunless tanner and glow moisturizers.
If you look at the photo, you will see that there are a lot of different products in this new & improved line of self-tanners. There are products for face, products in a mousse, lotions, and products for face, and products for the rest of your body. They also are available in different tone intensities. All the products, every single one, is just $8.99 per item!
My favorite in this line are the Natural Glow Face Daily Moisturizers with Sunscreen SPF 20, and the Jergens Natural Glow + Protect Daily Moisturizer Sunscreen SPF 20. Obviously, it’s because I am a stickler for wearing sun protection. There’s something almost poetic about a self-tanner that keeps you tan out of the sun, and yet, protects you from the sun’s damaging uva/uvb rays while you’re in it. Both the Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer for Face and for body with SPF 20 have 6% Octinoxate and 2% Octybenzone as sun protecting actives. When you’re using the body or face product, simply smooth it on as you would your normal, moisturizers. You’ll know when to stop when you feel a slight resistance (this is a signal that the product is starting to work). Allow several minutes to dry prior to dressing. Wash your hands after application. You’ll begin to see a subtle development of color within several days. The oil-free face product in fair to medium gave me a hint of a glow, and then, I stopped. Had I added more, it might have started to turn me that naturally-occurring “pink-to-red-to-orange” tone I dislike. But a day or two with this product moisturized and protected my skin, and gave me just a bit of color. Medium to Tan would be to much for my fair skin, but on deeper skin tones, it would do the same. How much you tend to “tan” depends upon how often, and how long, you use the product. Once you have to color you want, you can use the products for “maintenance.”
If you like foaming self-tanners in a can, you’ll like Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer. This product gradually gives you that “tan” without messy lotions or liquids. It’s easy to smooth on, dries completely without your having to wait around to get dressed, and provides streak free color, as long as you take some care to cover all the spots of skin that need to be covered. It also comes in intensities for Fair to Medium and Medium to Tan skin tones. First, exfoliate! This helps to slough off any dead skin and will help to ensure natural even color. Avoid oil based exfoliators as they will act as a barrier to color development. Shake the call well, dispense a small (about golf-ball sized) amount into your hand. Then, smooth it on as evenly as you can, as you would with your normal moisturizer. But use it sparingly on knuckles, elbows, knees, ankles and in between fingers and toes as these areas are dry and will absorb more of the product. If you want a more natural look, on the back of hands and top of feet, gently feather the product toward fingers and toes. Also keep in mind that with a natural tan, you’ll get less color on the underside of the arms than the tops of the arms. To get that natural look, apply the product to the tops of your arms and then blend around to the underarms. TIP: The Advice Sisters can’t realistically say you shouldn’t sweat for 3 hours after using the self-tanner, but for best results, try to keep your cool!
Also pretty nifty is the Jergens Natural Glow + Firming Daily Moisturizer. I mean, who doesn’t want to have a better, firming looking bikini body while looking fit and tan? This product helps you get a self-tan, but with your fake bake, there are ingredients to reduce the appearance of cellulite! It is extremely difficult to get rid of cellulite, but Jergen’s has an exclusive Firm Perfecting®Complex containing six ingredients known to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, including collagen, elastin and ginseng. It might not be a miracle, but you’ll look better and tanner, too! Beauty tip: use your Jergens Natural Glow products daily until you get the color you want, then continue using or use every other day to maintain your color. Your body will naturally exfoliate the skin cells that are holding the color, so if you don’t want to be faux bronzed anymore, stop using the product and your skin tone will return to its natural state in about 2 weeks, or use a body or facial scrub to help remove the unwanted color.
The rest of the collection of Jergens Natural Glow self tanning moisturizing products work wonders, too. You’re going to moisturize your face and body anyway (or at least you should), so why not get ready for showing more skin this Spring and Summer, using products that can do even more than that? You can get yours at your favorite grocery, drugstore or mass market retailer, and visit http://www.jergens.com to learn more.
