Staying home means cooking more at home. Unless you’re starting your home from absolute scratch, the chances are that you have at least some kitchen tools. But are they good enough to help you be your best in the kitchen? Will they stand the test of time when cooking? In this advicesisters.com story, I’m sharing 5 Fab Kitchen Goodies That Are Good Looking For Good Cooking. All are affordable, and you can’t afford to be without them!
Squish Nice & Colorful Knife Set:
The Advice Sisters have been obsessed with Squish by Robinson Home Products ever since I first discovered their collapsible colanders that fold flat for storage.
One product that Squish makes that doesn’t fold, but makes cooking easier and frankly, a bit more fun, is this colorful, 14-piece cutlery set.
The set is presented in clear plastic with an explanation of each item. There are blade protectors in the same colors as each knife on the back.
The set includes just about every type of knife a beginner needs to complete a kitchen. It would be a great gift idea for a shower or for a housewarming gift.
Left to right in the photo above are (3.5″ pink paring knife to peel and chop fruits and veggies); all-purpose 5″ Orange utility knife; 7″ light blue Santoku knife (for mincing, slicing, dicing); 8″ Chef Green Chef Knife (multi-purpose and for slicing meat); 8″ blue carving knife (for carving larger cuts of meat); 8″ purple bread knife (serrated edge for slicing bread); and the really good red kitchen shears for just about anything and everything.
The instructions say to hand wash these colorful knives and not to put them in the dishwasher. The non-stick coating on these stainless steel knives with the soft touch handles need a little extra TLC to reward you with tons of use.
The price varies widely online and in stores, but I saw it on Amazon for under $30.
Great Goodies from Good Cook:
Good Cook by Bradshaw International has some really easy to use, fun items.
Cooking With A Digital Scale:
Those who appreciate cooking with great tools will love this Good Cook Precision Digital Scale. It can measure up to 11 pounds on its digital readout. There’s an on/off button and also a button to toggle grams, pounds or ounces.
The slim design about the size of an iPad takes just two triple-A batteries to make it work. Tuck it into a drawer or on a shelf, or leave it out on your counter as it won’t take up much room.
Why do you need a scale? For starters, if you want a truly accurate measurement you need a scale. There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing a recipe you like, but you need to convert it.
This is particularly true when backing and measuring things like flour that can vary widely by weight.
Finally, it can keep you honest about your diet. A portion is not what you think it is and the scale doesn’t lie!
Cooking With A Wonderful Whisk!
When my whisk of many years died, I couldn’t find another one that could stand up. When cooking and using egg whites, for example, plastic whisks are too wimpy and many of the wire ones just were too flimsy.
Then I found the Good Cook 27585 Classic Balloon Whisk Kitchen Essentials, 10.5″, Black ($5.50 on amazon.com) This whisk isn’t just affordable, the chrome-plated wire is tarnish-resistant and strong enough to whip whatever you wish.
The plastic handle is easy to grip. It’s a simple tool but one that you need in your kitchen. This one is good enough to pass down to someone else, someday.
Another must-have even if you don’t use it every day is a great ice cream scoop. The Good Cook Smart Scoop has a wonderful design that lets you squeeze the handle to release a perfectly formed ball of ice cream, gelato, ices or whatever else you need (maybe mashed potatoes).
The good quality cast aluminum has a non-stick coating to help food slide off easily. However, the patented design lets you squeeze the handles to scoop and release the handle to eject. It’s so simple and yet so much easier than struggling with the traditional scoop design.
Once you try this you’ll be amazed at how easy it is and how well it works! Prices vary widely but we saw it for $17.30 on amazon.
Modern Manual Can Opener:
It may have been years since you used a manual can opener when you’re cooking, but if you are somewhere without power (e.g. camping, hiking, fishing..) and you want to open a can, it’s a must-have. The Good Cook Can Opener, Safe Cut Manual Can Opener has no sharp edges to cut you.
The slim, patented design leaves smooth and safe edges after cutting a can open. The cutting wheel never touches your food, which means less risk of contamination.
The rubberized handle is easy to grip, and the heavy-duty chrome construction means it won’t break on you when you need it the most. Stuff one of these affordable in your kitchen drawer or in your camping/fishing gear and you’ll never be “without.” We saw it for just $7.69 on amazon.com
