What does Winter mean to you? To some, it’s the majesty of a forest blanketed in white and ice. To others, it’s hot cider by a roaring fire. For many, it is the bleakest, darkest, and coldest time of the year with little to cheer until the crocuses peek out of the melting snowbanks. Whether you love or loathe Winter, one thing that makes it much easier and more fun, is a great coat. Lands’ End Outerwear has been one of my “go-to” staples for years.
Lands End makes such a wide variety of outerwear for men, women and children, in all sorts of weights from merely chill-chasing, to my favorite, thick, down jacket that is literally warm enough to brave the Arctic. I like the fact that they tell you what the temperature rating is, as well as lots of details about the coats.
Right now, I am wearing a Lands End Wool pea coat. It’s not just a classic, it is warm enough to handle Fall’s changing temperatures and it feels soft and luxurious. Lands End has wool coats for women ranging from a belted pea coat to a longer, commuter coat. The quality is evident, and the coat will last for years, making my transition from Fall to Winter, that much nicer. With a sweater underneath, the pea coat will let me stay warm through to the harsher, Winter months, when my Lands End down jacket takes over until Spring. I just feel so elegant in this pea coat. It goes with everything!
The wool coat above (there is a belted and insulated versions too) comes in petite, regular and plus sizes for $149.50 ($164.50 for plus). The color range from traditional colors such as black, mahogany and Winter white, to brights such as pink and an imperial purple. Unlike cheap versions where the wool is rough, this Lands End wool, woven in Italy, is super-soft, almost cashmere-like. In fact, it is actually a blended wool that includes 8% wool/20% nylon/12% recycled cashmere. (Dark Charcoal Heather is 63% wool/20% nylon/12% recycled cashmere/5% other).
There are nice touches such as a button tab on the sleeve, smooth stitching, a half-belt in the back, and well sewn-on buttons that fit perfectly into the buttonholes. The classic pea is fully lined. More importantly, the length is to the hip, so it covers you where you need it and isn’t skimpy in fit, but it is styled with slimming, princess seams, so it doesn’t overwhelm.
It’s simply, the most elegant pea coat for any price that I can find. Lands End rates the temperature range for this coat at 0° to 20° Fahrenheit. That seems about right, but a light sweater underneath will extend it’s wearability a bit more if the weather isn’t too frightful, or you’re just popping in and out of a car.
Pick your color, then have fun picking out a colorful scarf to add a pop of color. If you’re on a budget, you can get one of these Lands End “Cashtouch” scarves (they’re actually 100% acrylic) for just $19.00 (these make nice classic gifts, too). The microsueded fabric feels softer than wool, and it’s great for people who find wool too irritating.
The scarf measures 70″ L x 12 1/8″ with. 3 1/2-inch fringe. Since it is acrylic, you can machine wash it when you feel the need. I picked this grey with white and red details, but there is also a beautiful navy and a stunning, light khaki.
The thing about Lands End is that they really stand behind their products. If something isn’t quite right, they make it right. They actually care about their customers and their customer service people are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. That is key when dealing with purchases from an online site or catalogue.
I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true, and I have a personal story to prove it. I’ve recounted this story previously, but it bears repeating:
My husband was at the World Trade Center complex, attending a meeting, on that awful day on September 11th, when the planes hit the twin towers. Although he escaped unharmed, his briefcase and computer ended up in the piles of rubble.
Lands End briefcases are guaranteed against certain types of damage, but I doubt any of their briefcases previously were victims of a terrorist attack. In any case, I called Lands End and told them what happened. They immediately replaced his briefcase, no questions asked. When the strap on this briefcase broke after nearly eight years, they replaced it for free, no questions asked.
Name one other company that would do this?!!! I’m a huge fan of Lands End!
