I missed the launch party in Manhattan for the book, Life on a Star by Sassy AyR (Stacey Bresnahan). I really wanted to go because this book is perhaps the first scent-oriented novel where you can actually engage in a physical way with scent, not just by reading the book, but also by smelling it!
The sci-fi/fantasy plot is well…not what makes the book note-able.
What does, is the “Aquatouch Insert” — a scent coated bookmark, featuring the “Lost in the Moment” fragrance from the Laubahn Fragrance Company. Touch the insert and fragrance capsules on the paper break and release the fragrance.
Smell A Book?
Fragrance famously evokes experiences and memories so Life on a Star is more that just a book. It is a unique, multi-sensory experiential journey. It is also a way for a new company to excite consumers and market fragrances.
To make the book even more scent-sational (sorry, I couldn’t help myself) you can find fictional places (e.g. Naughty Garden and Lost in a Moment) you can find those on the company website.
As each new fragrance is launched, I assume there will be new chapters or new books appearing using the same technique to get consumers to buy the fragrances.
This is definitely a marketing gimmick, but for fragrance lovers, it’s a good one!
Fragrance Notes:
The fragrances were created by Perfumer Ralf Schwieger who has also created fragrances for Frederic Malle, Hermès and Yves Saint Laurent. These are not your average fruity floral.Here are the notes:
Lost in the Moment Eau de Parfum: Top Notes of Apricot, lime, orange and peach, Middle Notes of basil, geranium, jasmine, rose and violet leaf. Base Notes of sandalwood and vanilla.
The scent is intense and has “legs.” You really sense the feminine heart tinged with fruit.
Naughty Garden Eau de Parfum: Top Notes of bergamot, ylang-ylang and galbanum, Middle Notes of elderflower, sea salt, jasmine and rose. Base notes are sandalwood and musk.
This fragrance starts out bright and fresh, but the base notes quickly tame it into a light floriental.
