If you’ve ever looked at a magazine photo, or a model at fashion week, and you wonder how they get such flawless complexions, it might just be airbrushing! I don’t mean re-touching photos, I mean literally, using makeup powered by a micro-fine mist of air to get the kind of even, gorgeous complexion that can’t be accomplished any other way. You could pay to get this done for you in a salon, but now you can do it at home, with a DIY airbrush system or the new airbrush-in-a-can, both by Luminess.
Some makeup products make your skin better, and some make your skin look better. That’s why I’m excited about the Luminess Air Legend Airbrush System ( $149- $249.00) – This unique airbrush system gives you easy, quick and long lasting applications of airbrush foundation, blush, primers, skincare, eye shadows and more! There are plenty of more expensive airbrush gadgets around, but this one is affordable (if you use it often). With just a push of a button and some air, makeup is applied through the little well on the top. You can’t even approximately the even finish with brush, sponge or fingertips. More than that, the dermatologist-tested Luminess Air Legend is better and safer as you’re not sticking your fingers into a jar or tube, so you don’t contaminate the products you’re using.
The Luminess Air Legend is not just small, it’s quiet and for at-home use. The air-powered, micro-fine sprayer tip, along with Luminess Air’s own formulated foundation is pleasant to use. There are different makeup colors but they’re sheer enough to fudge a tone. In fact, the idea is to add layers (resist the urge to push back all the way on the throttle button to get one big layer in one sweep–it won’t look good). Setup is easy (cleanup requires simply blowing water through the main well).
I needed some practice with this to get the application right. But once you’ve got the hang of it (there’s a DVD included plus videos on the Luminess Air Web Site ) you can apply perfect foundation, plus Blush, Primers, Skincare, eyeshadows, and more. The instructions are clear but you have to follow them.
Pick your favorite color for the actual compressor: purple, aqua, pink, white, black, red and special edition prints plus the rose gold ($149.00) we received for review. The $249.00 version has a new, no-mess tip. There is also a larger Luminess Air Epic Airbrush System, ($399.00) with a full digital touch-screen. The kits include: a Legend Airbrush Compressor and Stylus; AC Adaptor; Instructional DVD (watch, before you test the products); a 1 Year Warranty; 2 – 0.55oz bottles of Ultra foundation ( 5 light, medium or dark shades), a complimentary 0.25oz bottle of blush, a Skin Brightening Glow Luminizer), and a 0.25oz Moisturizer/Primer. Foundations are available in Ultra, Silk, Satin, and Matte and you can check out the Luminess Web Site for all the products and colors available.
ENTER AIR SUPREMACY! Also by Luminess Air (and recently launched on QVC) is AirSupremacy, a full line of spray-on airbrush cosmetics to give you an airbrushed look without an airbrush system. This makeup-in-a-spray-can works with an ultra-low pressure system, creating a micro-mist that falls gently on the skin and blends flawlessly. Like the Luminess Air system above, this spray product also takes some practice, and some patience (again, you must layer the product, misting it lightly until you get the coverage you want).
Air Supremacy was easy to use, and pleasant (just don’t glop the makeup or it stays “sticky”). Since it’s in a can it’s travel-friendly (check in in your luggage). The water-based formulas have mineral-based pigments that are propelled into a fine mist which naturally feathers out upon contact with skin. The company claims that you will use 10x less makeup than if you used a traditional water-based formulas. I needed several layers to cover well, so I can’t imagine I really used less product than a dab of liquid or cream foundation, but if you only need sheer coverage the can should last a longer time .
The foundation is available in a dozen shades (each $29.00). This may seem pricey, but you just can’t get the same look without airbrushing. The other products are $29.00 per can as well. Blush comes in deep, medium or light (you need just a bit–again, don’t overdo it). There is a very subtle Body Shimmer in Golden Rose, Opal, Platinum and Terracotta. Additonal specialty cans of airbrushing product include a Mist Face Primer, Mist Airbrush Bronzer, Mist Makeup Sealant, and for $24.99 a product called Hide Out which is a concealer. The company claims it will last up to 18 hours. While I didn’t test mine that long and didn’t try the sealant, the makeup did stay fresh for hours. Also good to know for those with sensitive skin is that these products are Hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (and non-flammable).
Get a Luminess Airbrush Systems just in time for holiday parties and look your best, or give one — it’s a great gift idea, by ordering on the Luminess Web Site along with Air Supremacy or get an Air Supremacy 7-piece starter kit that includes everything you for approx. $53.00 on QVC .
