With all the emollient moisturizers and sun blocks that you really should be using, sometimes, breakthrough shine, happens. A great powder foundation or finishing powder can not only help reduce shine, but make skin look polished and flawless. My review today is of Koh Gen Do powder foundation, and Dermablend’s Finishing Powder. Both are high performance products you will want to try, and use, all year long.
Koh Gen Do began as a skincare collection based on traditional Asian botanicals and homeopath. The glamorous, eco-friendly makeup line was actually created specifically for hi-definition cameras. These literally can show every single flaw on a person’s face. Koh Gen Do has also been used backstage for hundreds of productions (including major Hollywood films) and are cherished by actresses and makeup artists worldwide. The Advice Sisters are enthusiastic fans of this pricey, but excellent line of skin care and makeup items.
Many of the items feature “Maifan,” a mineral rock used in Chinese medicine to treat various skin diseases. It is produced in the valley streams of porphyritic pea gravel, called Maifanshi in ancient China (because their appearance looked like a brown, rice ball).
A product that does double duty as a beautifier and a sun protectant, is Koh Gen Do Maifanshi UV Face Powder SPF 20 PA++ $42.00 0.42 oz. There is one color, Light Beige with “Luster.” The powder is ultra-fine combining two types of finely milled and cut loose powders. The product doesn’t just cover beautifully, it reflects light to give skin a flawless finish with radiance. Jojoba seed oil combined with silk powder and sodium hyaluronate help moisturize, especially good in the Winter when skin looks and feels dry. If your skin is already dry, a powder can sink into fine lines and wrinkles, making you look older, but this amazing powder actually camouflages pores and fine lines. The UVA/UVB protection is supposedly 20 PA++, (although I never use mineral powder as a sole means of sun protection). Wear a moisturizer or sun block or foundation with SPF as well. The loose powder comes with a puff, but you can use a brush too if you wish. If you use the puff, Koh Gen Do suggests you do the following: Place the powder puff on the top of the open shaker jar, then turn the container over a few times to mix the powder. Fold the puff in half and gently pat together to distribute the powder evenly, the spread onto the face pressing lightly on the T-zone where makeup can crumble. While loose powder can be messy, the elegant, super-silky, luxe formula make skin look so much better, it’s worth the extra effort and the extra cost. For those who need to know, Maifanshi UV Face Powder doesn’t have any Parabens, Sulfates,Synthetic Fragrances or dyes, phthlates, GMOs or triclosan. Koh Gen Do products are Koh Gen Do at Barneys in New York & Los Angeles, and on the Barneys Web Site. This particular powder is availagble onlkine at Sephora, but it is also available at Sephora’s new NYC Meatpacking District store, and The Forum Shops in Las Vegas.
Years ago The Advice Sisters reviewed Dermablend’s Smooth Indulgence Makeup $25.00. We liked the fact that it has twice the pigment and two times more coverage than a regular foundation and covers completely. Amazingly, it is still easy to blend with your fingertips or the included sponge. It will cover virtually every imperfection with an opaque, matte finishthat last for up to 12 hours, but without settling into lines and pores. In June 2011 Dermablend launched a Smooth Indulgence Mineral Finishing Powder ($24.00 0.28 oz.) This loose powder in a jar helps even out skin tone and minimize redness, while it controls excess shine and absorbs oils to keep skin looking fresh, even when oil and too many moisturizing products produce unwanted shine. The natural, translucent color allows skin to breathe and it doesn’t sink into fine lines and wrinkles. It’s even good for sensitive and allergy-prone skin. It’s non comedogenic, non acenegenic, oil and fragrance free and in two tones: “Dusk” (light) and “Amber” (deep). It is a silky, luxurious powder at a decent price for what it does. If you have rosacea or redness, minor acne scars or an uneven skin tone, andor your skin is sensitive, this powder will do its best to work for you and still look natural. Although it is supposedly a finishing powder, suggesting that you’d have a foundation product applied first, I’ve been using mine without additional makeup when I want a finished but natural look. Dermablend may not be the most elegant or sexy looking, in its simple, clear shaker jar with silver top, but it does what it is supposed to — and it does it well.
When you’re using loose mineral makeup, you need to apply it with a puff or a brush. Dermablend’s brushes are eco-friendly. even the pouch they are housed in are from re-useable and cotton. The Foundation Brush is a striking black bamboo handled brush with a black ferrule made from recycled aluminum. For $30.00 it is a good investment that you can use for any foundation or mineral powder, not just Dermablend’s. Ditto the Dermablend Concealer Brush $22.00 with tapered bristles that make pinpoint application, much easier. The Dermablend Concealer Brush has small, tapered head that is slightly larger than most concealer brushes. This lets you get into the tiny corners, but also blend more easily and flawlessly on larger surfaces. It has become one of my favorite go-to brushes for “detail work.” For those who care, the bristles do not contain any animal hair, but they pick up powder and liquid, very nicely.
