M∙A∙C In Lillyland – Think Spring, Now

January 11, 2010 By: Alison Blackman AdviceSisters

Here’s a great way to “Think Spring” right now, even though it’s just January.  M-A-C Cosmetic’s collection called “Lillyland”  is an homage to the colorful and pretty designs of Lily Pulitzer.  Pulitzer created her bright (e.g. hot pink yellow, lime green), colorful clothes throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s and her women’s clothing was a “must-have” for preppies, as chronicled in the fad book:  “The Official Preppy Handbook.” She closed her company in the mid 80’s, but then revived it in 1993 ( Lilly is still a Creative Consultant, approving new designs, etc.).

What I love about M-A-C’s cheerful collection for  lips, cheeks and nails, is that it channels the  West Palm colors that Ms. Pulitzer is famous for. Wear these hot pinks now, or during your resort vacation, and you’ll feel like you’re already in South Beach or West Palm.  When warmer weather finally does arrive, these colors will add that “pop!” you crave.

Here’s a rundown on the entire collection, and my personal experiences with three, key pieces:

Lipgelee ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

Lush & Bright Bright pink yellow-coral with pink pearl (Limited Edition)

Preppy Blue-pink with pink pearl (Limited Edition)

Four shades in a flower pattern (Limited Edition)

Cremeblend Blush ($18.50 U.S. / $22.00 CDN)

Joie-de-Vivre Peachy coral (Limited Edition)

Florida Bright fuchsia (Limited Edition)

Optimistic Orange Bright coral (Limited Edition)

So Sweet, So Easy Light yellow pink (Limited Edition)

Nail Lacquer ($12.00 U.S. / $15.50 CDN)

My first sample to review was the Creamblend Blush “So Sweet So Easy.” This limited edition, light yellow pink reminds me of the inside of a spiral shell on a Caribbean beach. It looks bright in the compact, but it has a creamy formula that is so silkly and sheer,  you’ll just get a whisper of luxe color.  I liked the look with the trendy, matte foundations that really do require a bit of depth but that need to be applied, flawlessly.

What’s blooming for eyes is a new take on color, with M-A-C- Pearlmatte Eye Shadow.. One larger than usual, limited edition, pressed powder eye compact holds three different, pearled shades, each nicely embossed with a lush peony blossom (at least I think it’s a peony).  The colors are pearly, but not overly so.  New is the fact that these aren’t shimmery, and have absolutely no glitter.  The compact holds a lime green, a bold rose, and a pristine, pearle white. They’re fun to wear, and although the colors look bright in the compact, like the Creamblend Blush, they’re super sheer and blendable. You can also layer one color with another, and make it all your own.
In contrast to the sheer blush and eye shadow are the limited edition colors of Lip Gelee.  I tried “Preppy,” a bright pink with pink pearl that leaves a wet look slick of starry shimmer on your lips. This lip gloss is not sheer. it  creates a full, sexy lip with lots of pearly shimmery to compliment the subtle, sheer colors on face and eyes.

Although Spring is still months away,  these pretty, feminine, and versatile colors will help you feel happy, right now. They’re available through Febriuary 2010…so hurry!
