MBT The “Anti Shoe” Makes Happy Feet

November 13, 2009 By: Alison Blackman AdviceSisters

What can you say about a shoe that is Swiss Engineered, patented worldwide, made in Vietnam, and is called MBT the “Anti Shoe.” If you’ve tried a pair, the first phrase that will come to mind first, is “seriously comfortable!”

Whether you totter around in stilettos, or prefer trendy flats, wearing shoes still cramp your feet, although maybe not your style. The MBT is still a shoe, but it is designed so differently that the creators called it an “Anti Shoe.” A pair could possibly become your best friend when you’re going to be on your feet a lot.

The design is key to the exceptional comfort of the MBT. According to the innovators, they realized that the human body is simply not built to walk or stand on hard, flat surfaces. They also discovered that conventional shoes stabilize the body in such a way that the body’s supporting muscle system is neglected, which can result in joint and back pain. So they developed a shoe that would continuously stimulate the postural and stabilizing muscles of the whole body. The newly-created footwear is called MBT (The Anti Shoe), but it isn’t like traditional footwear. Inspired by the way the Masai of Kenya walk, MBT stands for Masai Barefoot Technology, and the key to all this comfy walking is the patented sole construction, at the heart of which is the soft Masai Sensor. It is located directly beneath the heel and simulates walking and standing on uneven ground — something you’d do naturally if you walked barefoot on soft, uneven, natural ground such as sand or moss. However, in today’s world, we’re mostly walking on hard surfaces like cement, not sand or earth or moss. The heel of the shoe curves up slightly and since you’re not slapping your foot flat down on the floor, your body has to respond with small, active and controlled rolling movements to compensate. This rolling motion (it’s slight, you won’t fall over or anything like that) helps keep your posture and gait relaxed and upright, and there is less tension on your joints and back.

The shoe does more than make walking and standing more comfortable than you ever thought possible It also increase the fitness levels of the wearer with every step. That cushy, curvy, slightly unstable sole activates your muscles instead of undermining them.

If you wear MBTs, your body is forced to maintain its natural balance, thereby stimulating and exercising the body’s supporting muscle system. You do good things for your entire body without even thinking about it, but truthfully, it’s the sponge-y, soft, cushioned feel that adds spring to every step you take, that has hooked me.

Orthopedists, physiologists and podiatrists are recommending MBT footwear to patients who suffer from a myriad of foot, ankle, and other foot problems. If you wear stilettos a lot, for example, you might just counter-act some of the negative effects by switching off to MBT shoes.

mary jane 744747I walk a lot, and I have all sorts of foot issues that have made wearing heels, horrible. But even flats cause fatigue and pain, so I really was eager to see if these shoes would help. I was happily, surprised! They felt immediately wonderful, and have become my “go-to” shoe for any time I need to be on my feet more than usual. There a quite a few styles for men and for women, in casual, sandal and dress versions. But the substantial shoes do not look all that dressy. People make choices about function over fashion, and when it comes to The MBT shoe, I pick function! The pair I received was “Tunisha,” a shoe in black leather (it also comes in “grape”) that looks like a thick-soled Mary Jane. You can’t really wear any of the MBT shoes with dresses, unless you’re going for a very funky look, but in my Tunisha MBTs I’ve walked for hours, and I’ve stood four long periods of time, without fatigue or pain. Now, when I have to stand for long periods of time, and my feet and back start to hurt, instead of painfully shifting my weight from sole to sole, I just gently rock back and forth on my MBTs. The shoes really are designed to make your feet into powerhouses. You feel energized, and can stand and walk longer, without feeling pain. The shoes are not the most stylish shoes I’ve ever worn, but they are definitely among the most comfortable.

When you visit the web site you will find that the site is optimized for several dozen languages. You will also find informational “first steps with MBT” and exercises you can do with the shoes to boost overall, sustainable, health benefits. They are not inexpensive, around
$200 to $300 a pair. But once you try them, you’ll be hooked. A pair of MBT “Anti Shoes” would make a fantastic holiday gift for someone who is always hobbling around, complaining of pain. But most importantly, your feet deserve a pair. Save your pennies and get a pair of MBTs, and enjoy a new feeling….happy feet!
