When I moved to Florida one of the things I purchased was a metal detector. I thought it would be fun to walk along the beach and see what people had dropped. But the unit I purchased wasn’t very sensitive to what was under the ground, and it was very heavy. However, Minelab’s hand-held metal detection technology has been hailed as the best in the world. The company has a range of products at different price points for beginners, and beyond. Minelab’s detectors are affordable (starting at just $99.99).

Be An Adventurer in Your Own Right:
Some may think that serious metal detecting is only for TV stars such as Josh Gates (Expedition Unknown) and Gary Drayton (The Curse of Oak Island). Others may think it’s just for old men with nothing else to do. Really, this couldn’t be further from the truth, Anyone can be an adventurer and find something amazing! Searching with your metal detector along the sand, in the woods, or wherever you think there might be treasure puts you right into adventurer mode. Gary Drayton uses Minelab metal detectors in his professional work, and has found everything from old coins to a 300-year-old Emerald ring worth $500,000 on a beach.
You might not find that kind of treasure, but the chances are you’ll find things. Metal detecting is easy to do and exciting to try. It’s also a motivator for couch potatoes who wouldn’t consider walking anywhere, otherwise. You never know what treasures you’ll find.
Minelab offers a range of products for beginners and experienced users. Our editorial sample was the Minelab Go Find Metal Detector 44. It’s the mid-range product between the Go-Find 22 and the Go-Find 66. This lightweight metal detector has so much going for it. For starters, it is collapsible so you can easily store it. Once you read the instructions (a good idea with any new device) it’s super simple to use. The unit comes with custom camo skins in blue or green (we didn’t put them on ours in the photos–adding them is optional).
There is no assembly (thank heavens) other than putting 4 double A batteries in the unit to power it up. Easy Track Automatic ground tracking reduces noise interference so you can more easily when you’ve hit open something real. Go find 44 is touted as the lightest high-performance detector at just 2.3 lbs. If you have ever used a metal detector before you know that sweeping it around can make your arm pretty tired. That’s not the case with the Go Find 44.
The Go Find App
Use the Go-Find app on the apple store or google play. The GO-FIND 44 offers an enhanced advantage, searching even deeper so it can discover treasure others have missed. You can connect wirelessly with your phone, and on the top of the unit, there are icons to help you decide if you want to dig or not. For example, red+iron is probably trash. Green is a non-iron target. If you see this maybe you’ve just found a treasure! The fun is in the hunt. If you find something like a piece of jewelry or an old coin it might just pay for itself.
Although I don’t want to be distracted, you can listen to music while you hunt.
With the app, you can customize the detector. To help you figure out what you’ve hit upon, you can use the app to identify common coins. view detector information and even record your findings on Google Maps.

I haven’t found a big treasure yet, but I haven’t stopped looking, either!
