Maybe it’s the lack of long, sunny days, or the sheer amount of hats and scarves that push hair styles into disarray, but somehow, the Winter makes hair look even worse than it really is. Good products at great prices, are a hallmark of Avon. Their Advance Techniques Damage Repair brings new life and new hope, to hair that needs help. The Advanced Techniques Damage Repair Shampoo and Conditioner (srp. $6.00 each 11.8 fl. oz.) are supposedly able to reduce damage to your hair. This is not something I can really quantify, but I can tell you that vitamins and nourishing moisture polymers help to strengthen and protect hair while reducing flyaways. Oh yes, and the products are safe for color treated hair. For dry or damaged hair. These products won rave reviews for a gentle but effective set of products that cleanse and revitalize with creatine, conditioners & surface smoothers. They work hard to strengthen and protect, while reducing frizz and fly-aways. Add Advanced Techniques 3D Rescue Leave-In Conditioner ($12.00 3.4 fl. oz.) as a treatment, and in as little as three days, you may discover that even with Winter heat and hats that can make hair limp, yours will look like it was “on vacation!” This excellent product can be used on damp or dry hair, and instantly helps to mitigate 3 types of damage: CHEMICAL (color treatments, perms) ; THERMAL (blow dryers, curling irons ; and MECHANICAL (combing and brushing) . This product has a bunch of nutrients that target your hair’s most damaged areas, to strengthen the internal structure, help to mend split ends and nourish hair from the inside. Avon makes high performance, cutting-edge products that by some miracle don’t really cost a lot. Get your from your favorite Avon representative or visit the Avon Website.
These days, so many people are getting keratin and other chemical treatments to their hair, and if you do, it’s essential to use a sulfate free shampoo afterwards. There are plenty out there, but one I found called Free Your Mane caught my eye, particularly for it’s cute brand name and bold, bright “starbursts” on pristine white plastic bottles with easy to use flip-caps. While Free Your Mane is focused on the unique beauty needs of the modern multi-ethnic customer, the Shampoo and Conditioner $16.00 each 10.14 oz.) are good, everyday choices whether you actually need a sulfate free product, or not. The Shampoo is pearly, and smells clean and fresh, really quite uplifting. And the product lathers a bit, but also has natural oils in it to moisturize. The conditioner is equally refreshing and nourishing. With regular use, these products may actually help to improves chemical treatment results is the claim, but what I can tell you straight away is that your hair will look healthy and feel soft and clean.T he products also help to extend the life of your hair color, so it won’t strip out all the color and/or treatments you invested in. Free Your Mane is also free of parabens and 7% of the profits from Free Your Mane go back to the community. The nourishing ingredients that are stars, are Baobab Oil™ from Africa, ultra-moisturizing Argan Oil from Morocco, anti-oxidant rich Pomegranate Seed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil. Is your hair color looking a bit dull? You want vibrant color and lots of shine to get through the dull, dark days of Winter, don’t you?! I have found an instant color-renewing system called TouchBack Plus that adds instant, Temporary color in a range of shampoos, conditioners and leave-In conditioners without harsh chemicals. They add some color back into your hair that has faded, and they also protect against fading between permanent colorings. Unlike at-home dyes, TouchBack Plus lets you customize the intensity of color by what products you use. You don’t need gloves, mixing, or harsh chemicals, and there’s no ammonia, peroxide or sulfates. Even better, the products have UVA/UVB sunscreens and antioxidants to safeguard hair and protect the color. The TouchBack Plus products come in clean and easy to use, pump bottles. Each TouchBack Plus product is available in eight shades: Rich Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown, Ash Blonde, Golden Blonde, Light Auburn and Dark Auburn.
The TouchBack Plus Color Shampoo $29.95 4 fl. oz. revives dull color while it cleanses, with sulfate-free Micro Foam™. Each wash adds a layer of shiny color to both natural and color-treated hair, while protecting hair from UVA/UVB damage, oxidation and fading. *for best results leave the shampoo on your hair 1-2 minutes before rinsing. TouchBack Plus Color Conditioner $29.95 3.5 fl. oz. is a mix of hydration and color that adds color to both natural and color-treated hair. Like the Shampoo, the multi-tasking formula protects hair from UVA/UVB damage, oxidation and fading. Apply the Conditioner and leave on hair for 1-2 minutes before rinsing. For those who don’t want color, but do want shine, or who want to maintain the color they have without adding more at the moment, a good choice is TouchBack Plus Clear Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave-In Conditioner ($24.95). These can be alternated with the COLOR products to maintain your optimum color level, while providing superior fade protection, hydration and shine. Finally, there’s also a touch-up pen with colors that match the TouchBack color products. The Gray Root Touch-Up ($29.95) is something you can take with you for those moments when you look in the mirror and think: “Uh Oh! I’d better get to the salon” but you can’t schedule for a while. These products will work very well for most people, but my hair color is a unique gingery strawberry and none of the colors available (other than clear) will match it. The six colors of TouchBack will work for most people, however. If you have questions about these products or the color that is right for you, check out the TouchBack website
Winter is the time of year when keeping hair moisturized and static-free is essential. And there are so many products to choose from!
One line that has caught my eye (or rather, captured the affection of my hair), is the Pirri Elements line, inspired by “the beauty of the Mediterranean ‘crystal blue’ Sea, pure air, rich soil and fiery volcanoes. The products contain lemony bergamot (from an essential oil that comes from a fruit native Calabria, Italy, the hometown of the Pirri brothers) . The other ingredients are not listed. But these lovely-to-use products have something else that caught my attention: they are packaged in clear plastic pump bottles. Ever since I broke my right hand, I have come to appreciate just how nice it is to have a one-handed delivery system. A pump bottle is not just clean and easy to use, it also tells you how much to dispense “per serving,” and also how much is left in the bottle. Delivery systems are important, but what’s in the bottle is more so. The Daily Shampoo: Mediterraneo ($20/12oz.) contains cleansers and moisturizers good for all hair time. It also normalizes the hair, scalp and PH balance while keeping the hair looking healthy and shiny. Although bergamot has a somewhat lemony scent, this sea blue shampoo has herbal and marine notes that are uplifting and luxurious, The Daily Conditioner ($22/12oz) smells (at least to me) more bergamot-y and is a serene beige color. The rich, thick cream moistures and smooths the hair shaft, but it has another important Winter benefit: it helps to combat humidity and static electricity and also protects from damage of heat styler. *I didn’t try them, but there are two other products you can consider: a Smooth & Relaxing Serum: Lava Glazeo ($24.00 8 oz) is supposed to relax hair and reduce frizz (thanks to aloe vera), so you can air-dry without worry. There is also a Detangler & Leave-In Conditioner for $22.00/8 oz. called Nature’s Breezeo. These Pirri Elements products are not “drugstore” but they are comparable in price to other salon-style brands. The Pirri brothers have two hair salons, one in Connecticut and one in NYC. To purchase the products, go to either salon or visit: https://www.pirrihairgroup.com/
Like everything else on your body, your hair ages. Maybe you can’t turn back the hands of time completely, but products like L’Oréal Professionel série expert Age Supreme Shampoo srp. $24.90 8.45 oz. and Professionnel Expert Serie – Age Supreme Integral Omega 6 Replenishing Radiance Masque Srp. $40.00 6.7 fl. oz. can help you revitalize “mature” hair that needs a boost. The shampoo arrives in a pearly, flip-top plastic bottle. Replenishing Omega 6 & Lipid Ester add moisture and leave hair shinier and thicker looking. The masque comes in a screw-top jar which I don’t love, but it’s a quick, one-minute pick-me-up. The combination of shampoo and masque/conditioner really did leave my hair looking much more “peppy” with more body. It was a lot more pretty! The products are rich but rinse out easily, so your hair stays cleaner, for longer. Find L’Oreal in your favorite mass market retailer or drugstore. Learn more on the L’Oreal website.
I used to think that leave in conditioners would make my hair greasy or worse, limp and lifeless, but some of today’s leave-ins are lovely. One that I like and that is modestly priced for a luxurious, salon-style product, is the Repair Through Leave-In Conditioner Spray by Yuko (srp. $14.00 6.8 fl. oz.). This impressive, ice-blue, alcohol-free conditioner is a tapered pump bottle helps to revitalize, detangle, and smooth before styling, thanks to healing aloe vera. Simply spray on towel-dried hair. What’s particularly nice about this product is that it has no discernable scent, and it is super-light. But it still does the job of a good conditioner. If your hair is really damaged, dry, or compromised, use your regular shampoo and conditioner, then spritz on a bit of Yuko Repair Through Leave-In Conditioner Spray to detangle and add more loving care. You can get this and other Yoko hair care products at their salons, or online. Yuko also has a new, in-salon, anti-frizz treatment that blends natural ingredients, from silk, soy and wheat to safely control frizz and add shine. I’m hoping to review this treatment and share it with advicesisters readers in the future. Meanwhile get information and products on the Yuko website
Last year I discovered a very nice brand of styling products called Not Your Mothers. As I said at the time, with a name like “Not Your Mother’s” the implication is that these products are for young women. Surely, they are, but as I also pointed out in my initial review, I tried and like the products as well, and think they appeal to “girls” of all ages on a budget. Now, Not Your Mothers has taken their four most fabulous styling products and shrunk them to travel size. This is particularly great because lugging full sized stylers is impossible in a carry-on, and add weight to a checked bag (that could be better used for shoes, or souvenirs). The four products are just $2.99 each and have enough product to last a couple of weeks depending upon frequency of use. The “travel-ized” products are: Smooth Moves Frizz Control Hair Cream in a flip top tube 1.5 oz.; Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream in a flip top tube 1.5 oz.; Beat the Heat Thermal Shield Spray 2 oz.,l and Beach Babe Texturing Sea Salt Spray 2 oz. My favorite is Beat the Heat. a thermal styling shield with sunflower and Vitamin A and E. to help protect your hair from the heat of blow dryers, flat irons, and curlers. It will even helps flat irons glide better, and it blocks iron UV rays that can sabotage the health and beauty of your hair. It has a light fruity smell which is pleasing but not overpowering. Also great is the Smooth Moves Frizz Control Cream (this one is a must have in humid climates when you’re on vacation). It features coconut and silk extracts to keep hair silky, smooth and shiny. It also smells like yummy coconut (to put you in that holiday mood even before you leave home). Add some to damp, towel-dried hair and when you blow dry you will know why I like it so much! The other products are equally fun to use. Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray has actual Dead Sea salt and sea kelp that help to create random waves and body. For curly hair, Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream features grape seed and jasmine to keep curls smooth all day long, after blow-drying! These products can be found at select mass market retailers and the Not Your Mother’s WebSite *The Advice Sisters just learned that CVS is bringing in the products (by the end of Feb) in 7,000+ stores! Duane Reade is also a new retailer in 2012.
