When the salons were closed shut and it had been a while, the only thing most people could consider was to do their own color. The results on TikTok and Instagram were often not very pleasing. They might have been better off with some of the Natural Hair Dyeing Hacks my guest poster Sophie Tanner suggests. If nothing else your hair won’t be subjected to chemicals. If your hair salon is still closed, or your want to save money and slightly alter your color, try these. Most of you probably already have some of these ingredients at home.
Hair Hacks: Let Coffee Darken Your Hair
Coffee not only works to exfoliate the scalp, it also helps to darken your hair a bit, cover gray hair or give you a richer tone. First, make a very intense coffee, like an espresso, and let it cool. Next, mix it with a cup of treatment cream and 2 tablespoons of coffee beans. Apply it to clean hair and leave it for an hour then rinse. You may need to repeat the process to see better results.
Darken Hair or Cover Gray with Tea
Like coffee, black tea can be used to darken hair or cover gray hair (for dark, light and red hair). If your hair is blonde, however, chamomile is the most appropriate. A natural hair hack for redheads is rooibos tea. The more concentrated the tea, the more visible the result is going to be.
Here’s how to do this natural hair hack: Steep 3-5 bags in two cups of water. You can then apply the cold tea directly to your head or mix it with a conditioner. Let the mixture sit on your hair for an hour then rinse. You can leave it on for longer depending on the intensity of color you want.
Let Lemons Naturally Lighten Your Hair
Lemon juice will naturally lighten your strands. All you need to do is spray your hair with lemon juice, brush it through, and then sit in the sun. This last step is key, without the sun, lemon juice has no lightening effect. It may however dry out your hair, so be sure to use a good conditioner after you shampoo.
How this natural hair hack works: The citric acid in lemon juice is a natural bleach or oxidizing agent. It bleaches your hair by chemically reducing the color pigment or melanin. When exposed to the sun, the citric acid accelerates the bleaching process.
Blonds will become lighter. Be aware that if your hair is dark, it will oxidize and become more reddish.
Hair Hacks: Red Highlights with Beetroot and Carrot Juice
Another natural hair hack if you want to go a bit redder is to use beet and carrot juices for natural highlights. Choose either beetroot or carrot depending on the tint you are looking for, juice them, then apply the liquid to your hair. Mix either juice with coconut or olive oil and condition your hair at the same time.
