The weather is getting warmer and with the sunnier, warmer weather comes the opportunity to re-visit your makeup. Here are a few of my new “Best Friends” when it comes to luxurious makeup that multi-tasks and helps you look beautiful while providing skin-pampering benefits:
BANISH SHINE: Breakthrough shine getting to you? One thing that really helps to keep down shine, is a good pressed powder. If you don’t like to wear foundation, especially in warmer weather, a good tinted pressed powder can give your skin a more polished look without spackling on a lot of creams or liquids. One that helps your skin look smoother with or without foundation, is Flawless Cover Pressed Powder ($29.50) by Beauty Addicts. This powder arrives in a slim, square , shiny black compact, with a nice interior mirror. The powder is paraben-free, and infused with good-for-your-skin ingredients like chamomile to soothe your skin, and antioxidants and Vitamins A, C & E to protect and repair.
The powder comes in three tints: Light, Medium and Deep. Medium is fairly deep, and Deep is quite dark. Apply it with the included, slim sponge applicator for a more complete makeup look over foundation or tinted moisturizer. If your skin is dry, the semi-matte finish might look a bit powdery if you don’t moisturize first, but even if you choose to just wear it instead of foundation, you’ll see that it has enough coverage to cover up minor flaws and still let your own skin shine through. Visit www.beautyaddicts.com or a salon near you to get this lovely multi-tasking powder.
PAMPER LIPS: Sometimes a simple item isn’t what it seems on the surface. That’s certainly true for the luxe, multi-tasking, Lip 2- Gloss Moisture Therapy + SPF Lip Gloss ($30.00/each) and Lip 20 Moisture Therapy + SPF Therapy ($30.00) Lipstick, from Kaplan MD.The packaging of these products is simply, sensational. The Lip Gloss arrives in a slim, elegant, clear tube that curves in, just
slightly, and the top is a shiny silver cut on an angle with a tiny mirror on the top.
The Lip Therapy Lipstick arrives in a very lightweight silvery tube with a ribbed middle section that lets you really control it. It took me a few moments to realize that this case is an all-in-one compact that twists upwards to dispense the lipstick bullet. The top opens to the side, like a mini jack-in-the-box. As you continue to swivel, the bullet reveals itself, with color on the outside, a clear core of treatment in the middle.
The packaging is exceptional, but the real “wow!” is inside the products. The gloss is delivered with a wanded sponge-tipped applicator, dispensing what Kaplan MD touts as “the first complete anti-aging lip treatment that moisturizes, repairs, adds natural fullness, and protects with SPF 20.” The Lip Treatment (lipstick) has the same, as does a Lip Balm, dispensed from a tube. The products feel silky, hydrating and pampering, and the SPF 20 is enough to protect your lips from the sun’s damaging (and aging) rays, on a daily basis. Lips feel softer, smoother, and plumper with immediate results that you can really see and feel. There are a lot of ingredients in these lip treatment, too many to list, but there are 22 certified organic extracts. Key ingredients include: sea buckthorn berry extract , a “Phytogenic Triactive Complex” consisting of soy, grapeseed and black cohash extracts (for powerful anti-aging benefits), and hyularonic filling spheres and marine collagen. The products do not contain parabens, castor oil, sulfates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, animal ingredients, PABA, or petroleum jelly.
As to the beautifying effects, there are seven nice, 7 shades in each collection ranging from light nude and natural, to berry and peach, and moving towards brights such as Ruby Shine (red), and Blackberry and a deep but sheer, Wine. Pricey, but perfect for purse, travel, and they really have a lot going for them, KAPLAN MD was created by Beverly Hills dermatologist, Dr. Stuart Kaplan M.D. Emmy Rossum and Hilary Duff, fashionistas both, are fans of the KAPLAN MD line. Now I am, too (and if you splurge on these you’ll be hooked as well). Get yours at Bergdorf Goodman and www.bergdorfgoodman.com, as well as select Neiman Marcus locations and www.neimanmarcus.com
FIND A NEW FRAGRANCE AND ADD IT TO YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE: L’Occitane En Provence has produced some of the most ladylike, luxe products for Spring, with beautiful pink outer cartons done featuring a delicate, pink peony, with green and gold accent design. The Pivoine Delicate Collection products inside are as beautiful as the outer trimmings. Lovingly called the flower of a thousand petals…the peony has a variety of subtle scents and hues. The one that inspired this L’Occitane Pivoine Délicate collection is found in Provence. It has soft, pastel pink petals that resemble a silky fabric trimmed in pink lace!
Fittingly, many of the eight items in this ladylike Pivoine Delicate collection are scented with Pivoine Delicate fragrance. It blends citrus fruits and white peach, with a heart of rose, peony and lily of the valley, and base notes of white musk and light woods,, resulting in a light floral scent that leaves a delicate, powdery floral on your skin. Briefly, there’s a Eau de Toilette $45 – 2.5 fl.oz; a lighter Fresh Mist $16 – 1.7 fl. oz.; Hand Cream $22 – 2.6 oz.; and a shimmery Powder $34 – 0.28 oz. all scented, plus a travel-friendly Eau de Toilette and Lip Gloss Duo $24 – (x2) 0.19 fl. oz., and several lip products on their own: Lip Balm $12 – 0.31 oz.; Lipstick $16 – 0.12 oz. and Lip Shine Lip Shine $16 – 0.27 fl. oz.
A very feminine (think: Mother’s Day) standout is the Shimmering Powder. The pink, sparkling powder is lightly scented, dispensed from a lovely, glass, vintage-style atomizer with pink fabric-covered pump top. The powder is not just scented, it’s enriched with natural, iridescent micro pearls and softening peony extract. One caveat: when you remove the tiny, plastic “safety pump plug” from the product, be careful when you depress the pink pump top of the atomizer. Press gently, or you may find yourself inudated in powder instead of getting the light spritz of scent and glimmer you desire. At just $34.00 it would make a lovely gift, maybe even for your bridal attendants, especially if it is coupled with the Eau de Toilette and Lip Gloss Duo at $24.00. There is nothing more travel-friendly than a roller ball, unless it is a dual-ended one, where there’s a lip gloss paired to the other end. This Duo has a tiny roller ball of Pivoine Délicate Eau de Toilette on one end, and a a creamy, pastel, sheer, lip gloss on the other. The glamorous gloss features grape seed oils and antioxidant vitamins E and C to nourish lips and protect from free-radicals. While I didn’t try the other lip products, the color palette is that of the peony: pink, coral and deep rose. All look like they’d make a lovely addition to your warm weather look.
