Watching Charlotte Tilbury Backstage at Fashion Week:
Many many many seasons ago, I was able to watch the best makeup artists in the world apply products to the faces of some of the most sought-after models. One of my favorite makeup artists to watch was Charlotte Tilbury. She was very focused on her work. But she was also so gracious when I asked questions. The snippet above shows Charlotte’s work from a report I wrote for The Advice Sisters Web Site daily coverage of Fashion Week back in 2009, and Charlotte was the lead for the Diesel runway show using another brand’s makeup…now she has her own line.
Charlotte Tilbury knows makeup, and her own line is very impressive. Her line just recently launched, and The Advice Sisters just recently featured two fabulous red lipsticks of hers in a feature on December 20th focusing on luxury red lipsticks. I think this green Luxury Eye Colour Palette ($52.00) called “The Rebel” will really turn heads. However, there are 7 different color palettes in case you want to try another color set.
The Colour-Coded Eyeshadows are four coordinated shades that you can use for day to night to uber-praty looks, depending upon how much you layer. I simply swiped one color on my lids for daytime and used more of the glittery dark shadow as a liner for evening, but how intense you want to go, is up to you. Here’s a bonus — some DIY from the makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury herself:
DESK (day look)
STEP 1: Using my EYE BLENDER BRUSH, apply PRIME to the entire eye-lid, with a backwards and forwards ‘windshield wiper’ motion. Then using my EYE SMUDGER BRUSH apply the PRIME shade to the inner corners of the eyes to open them up.
STEP 2: Nestle the ENHANCE shade in the outer corner of the eye socket using my EYE SMUDGER BRUSH and blend. Then using my EYE SMUDGER BRUSH apply the ENHANCE shade along the upper and lower lashline.
DUSK (evening look)
Repeat STEPS 1 and 2.
STEP 3: Using my EYE SMUDGER BRUSH, blend the SMOKE shade from the outer corner of the eye, upwards and into the socket. Then using my EYE SMUDGER BRUSH apply the SMOKE shade along the upper lashline and into the socket in a half-moon shape. Also run it along the lower lashline.
• DISCO (night look)
Repeat STEPS 1, 2 and 3.
STEP 4: With your ring finger, apply the POP shade to the center of your eyelid for amped up glamour. For more information visit the Charlotte Tilbury Web Site.
Make Merry With Mary Kay Cosmetics:
Mary Kay is beloved around the country and the world for easy-to-use, affordable products. But MK also has some really glitzy makeup products. Strut your stuff way into 2015, without ruining your beauty budget. Although These holiday items from Mary Kay didn’t make it into my holiday gift guides in time, they’re perfect for gifting to yourself.
I am really loving the tempting new Mary Kay Nourishine Plus Lip Glosses ($14.00) wet look plus shimmer that makes your lips look as dazzling as a disco ball. Although all the colors, both creamy and shimmery, are great, the one that makes any lipstick or even bare lips party-ready is the sheer “Golden” shimmer. This gives lips a wet look shine full of a golden shimmer than you can wear on bare lips or over your favorite lip color. For a sexy party color that works on nearly every skin tone and is an alternative to red, try “Sparkle Berry,” a festive bright berry that isn’t too over the top shimmery but nicely catches the light.
Even better, these lip glosses have good for your lips ingredients that nourish and hydrate them with Mary Kay’s own complex of antioxidant-rich vitamins and plant-derived minerals. The formula is shiny, the sponge tipped applicator makes even the deeper shades easy and smooth to apply, the feel is silky, not sticky, and the bottle is petite enough to fit into a makeup bag.
For Your Eyes From Mary Kay:
For eyes, you can’t do much better than one of the four shimmery Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color Quads ($18.00/each) infused with enough shimmer to be glamorous, but not gaudy. The petite-sized palettes comes in thin plastic compacts, but they can be put into Mary Kay Compacts and Mini Compacts, if you already have those. The four shades in each compact are coordinated from matte to high shimmer so you can make a daytime look and touch up with the same palette in your purse for night-time.
I can’t really tell you which one is best, just pick the color set you like the most, but if you twist my arm I’ll suggest “Black Ice,” featuring gold, silver, copper and black shimmer shades that do literally “look like a million.” These are minor investments that will take you into 2015 party season without breaking your budget, and if it’s already on nearly empty, even one of these eye or lip treats will dress up your look. For more information visit the Mary Kay Web Site and find a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant near you.
Rock with M.A.C. Cosmetics:
Ring in the new year with a rockin’ red! M-A-C- Cosmetics is known for having more lipstick colors than there are stars in the sky. Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. But M.A.C> has plenty of glitzy makeup. They excel in red-centric lipstick shades. Two of the newest, from the M-A-C- Cosmetics Matte Lip Collection ($16.00 each) are MAC Fashion Revival and La Vie En Rouge.
Fashion Revival is described (by M-A-C) as a “deep raspberry.” It’s a dark, muted raspberry with a semi-matte finish. It’s pretty dramatic, more purple than red, but still with enough red to make it into this review. For those with deeper skin tones, it will flatter, and for those with pale skin, it will be a dramatic way to wear a very deep red-centric berry.
La Vie En Rouge is described as a “bright orange coral.” To my eyes, it is closer to a red with a lot of pink in it than orange., and almost retro red. It reminds me of the reds that women wore in the late 50’s and early 60’s where the red wasn’t as “bloody” or cherry as bright and warm. These matte lipsticks are very long-lasting so you won’t have to touch them up all evening long, but for additional moisture, slick on a matte lip balm or add some gloss. You’ll want to check out all the reds at M-A-C- counters and at MAC locations and online!
Makeup From Macy’s:
This is the gift that if “Santa” didn’t send it last week, you want to get for yourself, right now. The shiny gunmetal, quilted top offers glitz before you open this amazing face-in-a-case palette of neutral tones that you can wear glammed up, or later on, just for work and play in early 2015. It’s the Macy’s Impulse Beauty Eye and Cheek Palette – A Macy’s Exclusive Web ID: 1708448 and part of the Macy’s Impulse Beauty Palettes Collection.
What I like so much about this particular palette is that it has wearable, neutral tones that work for literally, every skin tone. However, it is just $25.00 (I can hardly believe it as I’m typing this fact).
The palette is nicely arranged from light to dark in four different squares with 20 assorted eye shadows in matte and shimmer and 3 blush/bronzers. You also get a huge interior mirror, a dual-ended sponge-tipped applicator, and a tiny blush/bronzer brush (I’d use my own, actually, but if you need an applicator in a pinch, they’re available). This set is slim enough to tuck into a travel bag, but huge enough to get you through any vacation or business trip providing different looks from casual and matte daytime looks to more intense and glittery party fun! It’s not much of an investment for what could be a whole year of beauty, in one palette.
This palette is perfect for New Years and beyond, available exclusively at Macy’s
Shimmery Gold Body Lotion:
La Bella Golden Shimmer Body Lotion with Honey & Oats sounds like it could be greasy, or gaudy, but it’s not! This easy to add glam product just adds a little golden shine to skin and a lot of moisture. It has shea butter, vitamin E, aloe vera, honey and oats to smooth and soothe skin all packed into a generously-sized 8 0z. . flip top tube. La Bella products are focused on the Hispanic market, but you certainly don’t have to be a glamorous Latina to use them.
This product is clear with just a tiny bit of shimmer. In fact, I almost included this in a “new year new you” upcoming feature instead of for New Years Eve glam, but if your skin is dry and dull, this will deal with the “dull” and give it a bit of a glow, as all those good for your skin ingredients hydrate as any moisturizing body lotion, should. We all need this when we’re wearing sexy dresses and tops to a party or just showing some skin, anywhere, any time. Here’s the kicker: it’s just $3.99 a Walgreens and through the LaBella Beauty Web Site
