New York Wine Expo - An International Wine Tour Under One Roof

Even unusually cold, snowy weather couldn’t keep the crowds away from the preview night of the 3rd Annual New York Wine Expo at the Javits Center. The line long (and eager to start tasting wine) about 20 minutes before the doors officially opened. This event, now it it’s third year, draws experienced and neophytes who want to learn more about wine. The event was open to the public for a preview night on The Friday February 26th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, and on Saturday February 27th from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.

I covered the same event last year, and was eager to experience it again. This expo is a grand tour of wine — a wine tasting tour on steroids. Instead of just one region (e.g. Napa, or the Willamette Valley) this event showcases (mostly) affordable wines and beverages — over 600 wines from over 150 winemakers, from around the globe. There really was a lot for everyone’a tastes and interests, in just about every category: reds, whites and rose, sparkling and champagne, even cider, and a nice sampling of gourmet foods. The wine in the photo was a sparkling with real gold flakes in it. It tasted lovely, and it wasn’t a kings’s ramsom, either!

Just like the Olympics (going on that same weekend) the exhibitors from all over the world were focused on showing off their very best. The event gets crowded fairly quickly, but the Javits Center is so large, everyone gets an opportunity to talk directly to the winemakers and other winery principals. I got a chance to talk to many proprietors, including Fulcrum wines in California, and Millbrook Wines in New York State’s Hudson Valley.

The New York Wine expo is a lot of fun. This year’s event is over, of course, but if you’re interested in going next year, you can get a $10.00 discount if your get your tickets early. This year Friday admission was $75 in advance, Saturday admission: $85 in advance
