While there’s nothing more pleasing than fancy packaging, when makeup artist Dimitri James decided to start his own makeup and skincare line, he also decided to put all the effort and quality into the ingredients and the products, not into advertising and packaging. He founded the company in 2002, after having worked in the cosmetics industry for 20 years. While I wouldn’t say that SKINN cosmetics come in “cheap” packaging, for the most part the packaging is utilitarian. The products are, for the most part, good to excellent. But there are some new products from the line that may really help you have a great day, especially on the road as I think these are particularly good for women who either travel a lot or just don’t have a lot of time to deal with makeup application. I’ve skimmed the new SKINN products and selected six new ones for eyes, lips or face for you to consider. Which will become your new favorites?
When you hear the word “Plasma” do you think of blood transfusions, or television sets? Well, the Plasma Fusion Setting Veil Skinn Diimitri James $36.00 is nothing like either of these, of course. It’s a new, talc-free, that’s got a lot more under the hood than just powder. The non-fragranced, lightweight pressed powder has a yellow core that is infused with anti-aging ingredients ( a more stable form of Vitamin C, Argan Oil and antioxidant properties, helping to promote the appearance of supported collagen to help visibly decrease the look of lines and wrinkles, while allowing skin to feel and appear more balanced, hydrated and nourished), and it also has brightening properties, so your skin looks more radiant, and more smooth. You can use it over your foundation to help set and extend the wear of your makeup-up, or you can use it on bare skin. The mirrored compact has a bottom section containing a puff applicator. Nifty, and great for your purse for touch-ups and for reducing shine throughout the day. As long as you’re going to use a powder, why not make it a powerful powder!
Applied before makeup, the Skinn Cosmetics Moisture Rush Volumizing Wand $34.50 0.47 oz is a portable, travel-friendly stick that is designed to help fill in and plump the appearance of parts of the face and body that appear to have sunken or caved in over time. The formula is gel-like, with Hyaluronic Filling Spheres and Hyalusphere, which work in tandem to promote the appearance of skin volume and fullness. The product has encapsulated and time-released Hylaronic Acid and it’s also formulated with brightening pigments that instantly help illuminate and brighten the look of your complexion. There is also a light orange scent that’s advertised, but honestly, I barely noticed or smelled it. You are instructed to apply it after your regular skincare to laugh lines, brow bones, cheekbones, backs of hands, neck and jawline. I’d suggest doing so before applying your foundation. Although I love Dimitri James and SKINN products in general, this is one of those “hot, or not” products that you will love, or you won’t get it. I think it depends upon the condition of your skin to begin with, and what your expectations are. I read some reviews of this and people were saying all sorts of amazing things, and also some negative things. I liked it, but I also realize that it’s an enhancer, not a miracle. No product is going to act like a filler will. For the price, it’s nice to temporarily deal with smoothing out some dry lines and wrinkles. If your skin is in pretty good shape, it’s one thing, but only a more invasive treatment is going to deal with seriously over-taxed skin. I like this one for travel however, just as a pick me up.
Everyone is “Twilight” crazy, so I guess it is also on Dimitri’s brain. Dressed in gleaming shades from a dark plum to blushing pink, his latest Patina Eyshadow Palette Twilight Sky $22.50 has a pick of plums and anti-aging ingredients to help fight free radicals and crow’s feet as you beautify your eyelids. Thinking about plum (or in this case, grape), the shadows have nourishing anti-oxidant enriched grape seed extract, wrinkle reducing and eyelid firming Matrixyl peptide, and moisture-binding hyaluronic acid. How can you resist some of the season’s hottest colors, and a way to keep eyes looking younger, for longer? You get a dual-ended sponge-tipped applicator that is long enough to actually use, too. *note: the photo shows the colors as whiter and brighter than they appear in real life. They are silky and intense in color, but much more natural, softer, and more subtle and much easier to wear.
Wake Up! Big Bright Eyes $28.00 comes in a cute, magnetic compact with a brow wax to fill in eyebrows with what is billed as a “universally flattering shade” (I would call it medium dark blonde) and three eye shadows in light beige, medium brown, and deep coffee bean (the press literature calls them pink, mauve and cocoa…but I’m calling these as I see them and trying them…the photo doesn’t look anything like what they really are), The shadows have some shimmer, but not so much that those with (crepe-y eyes will have issues). you get a dual-ended brush applicator. For the price, it isn’t bowling me over with excitement, but after consider it, for travel, the slim, lightweight palette, has everything you need to look “decent” creating looks for day or evening, and do it without hauling a lot of eye products…and for that, it’s priceless.
What’s your favorite color? Coral, blush or Pink? You don’t really have to choose if you select Skinn Cosmetic’s’ LipLock Duo $22.50 that pairs a hydrating lipbalm/lipstick (with a mint flavor) on one side, with a lip liner on the other. T he idea is to line and fill in your lips with the liner, then use the lip balm/lipstick to keep your lips moist all day long. The liner is water and tranffer-resistant. Skinn Cosmetics 2-in-1 Lip Lock Liner & Lipstick Duo was available in Blushing Beauty – Rich blush; Muted Coral – Light pink; and pretty in Pink – Dark rosy pink. It must have been wildly popular, because it appears to be sold out at the moment (or at least at the time I write this review). Note that the colors are very soft and subtle as are most of Dimitri James’ colors, and they are not glossy. If you want shine, add your own, or try another dual, ended product from Dimitri James such as his Tint & Shine Lip Gloss Duo ($15.00) that pairs a lip stain on one end with a shimmery gloss on the other.
“Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” is a famous command attributed to William Prescott, an American officer, at the Battle of Bunker Hill in the Revolutionary War. Well, there’s something that really does enhance the whites of your eyes, it’s the Skinn Cosmetics Bright Eyes Eye Enhancing Eyeliner ($18.00) that makes the whites of your eyes look brighter. Alas, the whites of your eyes really lose that bright white colors with age, but makeup artists know that appplying white pencil to the tear line or across the lash line of your upper lid helps brighten the eyes, instantly. Try it, it really works. You can also dot some of this right in the corner of the inner eye to make eyes look bigger. That works, too! This soft pencil isn’t harsh white, it is peach, so it does the same thing white does, but in a less obvious way. I love this and it’s easy to pop this swivel up pencil in your purse. Don’t travel without it.
