Do you remember “singe-ing?” It was all the rage back in the 1970’s to help your hair grow longer and stronger. What it involved was a scary process where the stylist (or someone with steady hands) held a lit candle and ran it lightly down the strands of your hair, burning off (or “singe’ing”) off the split ends. The theory was that if you burned off the splits they would “mend” and your hair would naturally grow longer and stronger without damage.
It might have actually worked, who knows? But one slip, and that lit candle could set your entire head of hair on fire, causing burns and baldness instead of long, luxe locks.
But who doesn’t want longer, stronger hair and what would we do to get it?
A modern, much safer and obviously easier way to deal with split ends, is not by burning them off, but providing moisturization and nutrients. You needn’t pay a fortune to accomplish this, either. For example, Not Your Mother’s Way to Grow Long & Strong Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner ($6.00 8 fl. oz. each). These are sulfate free and can be used safely on chemically treated hair. The products come in white, flip top tubes with red and black accents. A test drive delivered soft, shiny, manageable hair.
The shampoo really lathered well, and the conditioner washed out cleanly, leaving my hair detangled and ready for drying and styling. You are supposed to massage the shampoo and the conditioner into your scalp for 2-3 minutes each. If you have 4-6 extra minutes in the shower for this, that’s fine, but if you can’t stand it that long, a minute of so will still be very nourishing.
The only thing I’m not sure of is the claim on the tubes that these are made with Vitamins, Herbs, and Bioactives extracts because when I look at the label, there is precious little on there I can identify other than Horse Chestnut Seed Extract, castor oil, and biotin. But that doesn’t mean the ingredients are bad.
The brand name: “Not Your Mother’s” makes me squirm. It’s uncomfortable for someone old enough to be a mother to use something that implies that if you’re a “mom,” these products are not for you. But that aside, anyone can use the products and like them, be they men or women, of any age.
Also from this budget-friendly brand is a nice detangler/conditioner called: Knotty to Nice Conditioning Detangler is another from Not Your Mother’s that is infused with Brazilian Keratin that not only helps get out the knots and tangles, it also smooths and conditions nicely, in a plastic pump spray. You can use it on wet hair, But of course, you can also spritz a bit on dry hair to moisturize after (or before) a day at beach or pool, or whenever you need to give you yourr a bit of non-sticking conditioning. The fresh, fruity smell makes it extra nice, and the $6.00 for 6 fl. oz. won’t break your budget.
