Find Your Fragrance Phlur-Sonality – Discover Your Favorite New Signature Scent from Phlur
By Alison Blackman

PHLUR Is A New Way To “See” Fragrance:
Imagine choosing your special signature scent without smelling it first.
PHLUR Fragrance has a unique way to help you choose. It relies on sight and sound first, not notes and your sense of smell.
A Vision Board for Fragrance:
When you visit the Phlur website and look at the six fragrances you don’t get the usual schpliel. Instead you get a sort of “vision board.”
This “board” has photos the evoke the mood of the fragrance, the kind of person who might wear the fragrance, the personality of the fragrance, a playlist of songs that evoke the fragrance.
For those who understand what fragrance notes are, some basic fragrance notes are also provided.
But if you’re really new to fragrance and really don’t know a floriental from a green scent, or what amber or vetiver smells like, there are other ways oto consider what you might like.
For example, Phlur will tell you about “weight” of the fragrance.
Is it light (the kind you might wear in Summer or in a crowded office environment) or is it something sensual and heavy on your skin?
Will it last a long time, or just a short while)?
There are also quotes from experts about the fragrance.
Who Is PHLUR For?
Although the idea is going to entice fragrance fans, the site really does seem to be geared to younger audiences.
For example, the playlists feature (mostly) contemporary artists.
And there’s a section called “Conscious Choices} detailing environmental impact, sourcing, and the eco-friendly packaging.
In addition $5 from every full-size purchase benefits the ICUN – an offshoot of the UN that protects endangered species, both plants and animals.
Try It Out:
Eventually, you’re going to have to try the fragrances on your skin on your own time and see how they appeal to you.
Here’s how Phlur handles this:
You select two possibilities purchase will send two trial vials for $15 (each good for one week).
Wear the fragrances. DDecide whether or not one speaks to you more than the other.
When you’re ready to make a purchase of a full sized bottle ($85), you can apply the $15 to that purchase.
If you don’t like either selection, you’ve only invested $15 instead of a lot more for a full bottle you don’t really like.
I tried the Phlur Selection Proccess:
I consider myself an educated consumer of fragrance who generally look first at the notes, but I resisted.
After looking at the photos, songs and vibe of the fragrances, I picked two different in personality: Hepcat and Siano
SIANO:
Siano by Perfumer David Apel, this fragrance was described as: “for the outgoing and for going out, but not just for going out.”
This didn’t tell me much more than it wasn’t just a heavy date night fragrance.
Drake was the only name I recognized on the playlist (sue me, I’m not 20 anymore).
Finally I looked at the notes. green pepper, ylang ylang, osmanthus, mimosa and cognac.
Once it was in my hand and on my skin, I did smell green pepper and the floral osmanthus. It’s floral and lively. It was nice, but not really “me.”
Siano is floral and lively, it’s a party girl that can go to work too. . It was nice, but not really “me.”
HEPCAT:
Hepcat is obviously meant to give you an urban, Williamsburg-y Brooklyn vibe. I got that from the photos.
But it didn’t tell me what the scent would be like, The tag line: “coarse and fearless meets smoky and raw” was a clue.
The playlist included Rolling Stones “Wild Horses” uh, ok, did that mean the scent was going to be wild?
By Perfumer Nathalie Benareau, the notes were intense: saffron, black vetiver, tobacco, and oud. These reinforced the vision board as were instantly understandable to me.
I loved the strong, almost too smoky and in your face scent. It is SO me.
Maybe Phlur is on to something.
Hepcat probably would have been my first choice anyway, just from the notes.
I probably would have picked it from the vision board even if I didn’t know a thing about notes though.
So maybe Phlur has a point.
If you get overwhelmed at the fragrance counter, or you’re young and don’t know what you want, it’s a really cool way to help you find your way in the fragrance journey to one you’re really going to love.
