Can a drugstore makeup brand bring you fits of delight? Why not?! It isn’t the price that counts, once it’s on your face, but the quality. That’s one of the reasons I’m a personal fan of Physicians Formula, and I think you might want to join me! Physicians Formula always manages to wow me with trendy makeup that is wearable, skincare the actually has benefits, and the company is a master of really cute packaging….all at insanely inexpensive prices. The products make you feel as though you’ve splurged on something exceptional, but they won’t set your budget into a tailspin.
Another thing I love about Physicians Formula is that they offer lots of new products on a seasonal basis, most of them not just beautifying, but with skin loving benefits. There are plenty of new products for Spring 2013. So many, in fact, that it would take more than one column to write about all of them. Since I was sent some samples for review, I’m selecting my favorites, and I hope you’ll be excited to try them.
Before you add lipstick, blush, eye makeup or even foundation, it is a good idea to use products that help nourish and protect your skin. Physicians Formula has a new and cruelty-free Super BB all-in-1 Beauty Cream ($14.95) and also a new BB Cream Concealer. BB creams are not foundations or tinted moisturizers, but hybrids that contain moisturization, skin benefits, and sometimes, an SPF plus a hint of tint (there is a light to medium and a medium to dark). This one has a nice SPF 30 to really protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Like most BB Creams, it is lightweight and applies sheer and layerable. For most people, applying a BB cream is a first step, or the product to choose when going with a bare skin look. It doesn’t cover like a foundation, but it can blur imperfections and add a much needed sun screen to your face — at least enough to start out the day. You really need to re-apply any SPF during the day, every couple of hours, because they don’t stay potent, forever. And, your hair and hands also wipe some of the benefits away over the hours. There are only two shades: light/medium and medium/deep. If your skin is very dark, the medium/deep may still not work for you, but since these are really sheer, you’ve got to know your own skin and figure out if it works for you. Anything your BB Cream doesn’t cover, or for dark circles and blemishes, you can apply an additional layer of coverage with the Physicians Formula BB Cream Concealer ($12.95). The brush tipped applicator helps you dab a bit where it is needed. Like most if not all of Physicians Formula’s products, these are hypoallergenic, Fragrance-Free. Paraben-Free. Gluten Free. Dermatologist approved, and non-Comedogenic. This concealer is pretty opaque and spread-able, and it feels moist, but not greasy. Also you get the choice of two shades: light to medium, or medium to deep.
As Winter and the dark days start to end, perhaps your complexion is lacking a glow. While The Advice Sisters NEVER advocate tanning salons, I do understand that many people feel they really need a “little something” to give them back some color and glow. I’ll be reviewing some self-tanners in coming articles, but if you’re like me, and are afraid you’ll end up looking too orange or brick red, makeup bronzers are a great option. You get the glow and color you want, but you can control the intensity, and if you overdo or don’t like the look, you can simply wash it off.
Physicians Formula has several new bronzers. I tried four: Happy Booster Glow & Mood-Boosting Illuminating Bronzing Veil, Airbrishing BronzE Booster Bronzing Veil Deluxe Edition, Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer and the Bronze Booster Instant and Lasting Bronze Booster Glamorous Bronze Glow. The latter has glow activator technology that adds shimmer (actually quite a bit) with a vanilla scented powder that comes in the cutest little round atomizer ever. It looks like it should cost a bunch of cash, but it is just $14.95. It gives you an instant shimmer and a sheer glow that is stain-free, streak-free, and (thankfully) won’t turn you orange. It’s formulated with a blend of glow activators that also deliver antioxidant skin benefits. It’s gluten-free, paraben-free, oil-free, non comedogenic, and dermatologist approved. There is just one shade- Goddess Glow and it is supposed to be lasting, and it was. Don’t spray with wild abandon unless you really want to look like you’ve been in a sun for a long while. But, even I managed to look good (and my skin looks orange or brick red with almost every tanning product).
There are new treats–a trio of them, in the Physicians Formula Sexy Booster line. For traditionalists who want something super-special, the Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer is a way to get “tan” and deliver a bit of sauciness with your makeup. The product is a mixture of bronze and gold shimmer to “glitz” your skin, and the pheromone-mimicking ingredients including clinically tested Androstadienone, Cocoa Extract (aka “the Love Chemical”) and ancient aphrodisiac Horny Goatweed (no, I did not make that up!) It has maybe get a guy to sniff your body (literally). Pheromones attract the opposite sex, and even if you don’t attract a guy, you might attract plenty of admiring glances. To help amp up the “sexy,” there is a bustier embossed into the powder, plus a tiny silver stiletto as a “pull tag” and an enclosed blush brush and mirror in the bottom. While the color was a bit deep for my pale skin, a light dusting (moisturize first) works on just about everyone because it is sheer and shimmery. It is also hypoallergenic. Paraben-Free. Gluten Free.Dermatologist Approved. Non-Comedogenic. TIP: Add a blush to your cheeks with the Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Blush in “Rose.” This powder blush is a perfect shade of sheer, layer-able rose, with a deep rose stiletto embossed in the middle. However, the blush is very sheer, so you can use it on pale skin or layer more on top of your newly-bronzed and glitzed skin. It also features that “afterglow” vanilla scent and pheromone-mimicking ingredients. If you like that famous blush from a high end company (you know the one with the sexy name), you’ll love this blush, too! For a final touch, you can add the Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Lip Stain ($9.95) that also features the pheromones and vanilla scent, with a richly pigmented very deep rose gloss-stain that I can personally say lasted for hours and is pretty much “kiss-proof.” You’ll get some transfer, but at least not that oooey-gooey, sticky and deep tinted “mess” that can come off on your special someone’s lips, when you wear deep lip colors. That’s surprising enough, but what really surprised me was that like the blush, the color was flattering on all who tested it. And, the lip stain/gloss is moist, not patent leather, and has the Sexy Boosting Formula: infused with afterglow vanilla scent, plus the pheromone-mimicking ingredients. Wear the trio together, and see what happens!
Another “cute and sexy” bronzing option that reminds me of the kind of candy hearts you get on Valentine’s Day, is the Physicians Formula Happy Booster Glow & Mood Boosting Illuminating Bronzing Veil ($13.95). The little shimmery powder hearts in various shades of copper and bronze, give you the look of a loose powder bronzing veil, but without the mess of a loose powder. The hearts make me happy just to look at them, but their real claim to fame is that they contain Physicians Formula’s Happy Boost Blend featuring Happy Skin™ and Euphoryl, natural plant extracts which have been shown to promote a feeling of happiness by mimicking the effect of Endorphins and helping protect the skin from environmental stress. Those who love the scent of violets, will be extra happy to smooth this on their face with the enclosed bronzing brush and/or pink buffer puff. Be careful when you open the hot pink metallic compact however., I turned it upside down by mistake, and all my hearts found their way to the floor! Luckily, since they are solid, I could pick them up again and averted, disaster! The effect is subtle, and that’s just what I like!
Bring out the BIG bronzing guns when you want big bronzing benefits. $15.95 gets you a pressed powder compact of Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Airbrushing Bronzing Veil Deluxe Edition. I love the look of the sun embossed into the middle of this bold and bronze compact. It just looks in a world: “luxe.” It comes in two shades: Light to Medium and Medium to Dark, but the light to medium looked very deep and golden (to my eyes). I needn’t have worried. When I brushed it on with the included bronzer brush, it was sheer and lovely. In fact, maybe the best of the best. Italian technology combines the best features of powder, baked and cream bronzers and the product really felt as though I’d lit my skin from within, without any trace of being obvious. It was a big (and nice) surprise. Wear it over your tanning products, or just alone for a subtle highlight.
To be sure, there are plenty of other new products for eyes, lips, face, but I’m moving onto nails. which have become the must-have fashion accessory. Not wearing nail polish these days is almost like going shoe-less! $10.95 gets you one of several Endless Color Custom Nail Trios — three round, mini-sized bottles of color that you can mix and match, layer, or play with for a myriad of looks. For those who are worried that nail polish has a bad reputation for bad ingredients, note that these are really good and free of Free of: DBP, Camphor, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Parabens, Gluten, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Petrochemicals, Pthalates, GMOs, Triclosan. You can rock the bold and deep colors with a berry, black and red trio called: “Smokin Haute” or go the totally opposite route with “In the Nude,” a trio of opaque peach, pink and perle. There are plenty of other colors in bright, tropical hues and even a three shades of grey trio. The little bottles pull off like pop-it beads (remember those?) so you can take just the tones you want with you on vacation, to the beach, or wherever! Buy two or three of these trios, and you can do “nail art” or different types of tips, too. They are just fun, and versatile, and really affordable.
The Bottom Line: There is SO much to like about Physicians Formula, this article is just a tempting taste. There are plenty more treats to try. No matter what the product, Physicians Formula continually wins my heart. The best way to understand how lovely these products are, is to experience them for yourself. Fortunately, this is easy to do, since Physicians Formula products are sold in drugstore and mass market retailers. You can also find them on the Physicians Formula Web Site.
