Physicians Formula is quietly amazing. It is just one of those budget minded brands that seems to quietly develop some of the most nicely packaged and high performance products at prices that everyone can afford. Each season fashionistas are offered trendy but wearable colors, and lots of skin-friendly products, usually in amazing packaging that you’d covet, no matter how high the price.
For Spring 2012 there is a wealth of innovative beauty booty from Physicians Formula and you don’t have to pinch yourself to know that they’re not too good to be true. And even better, everything is affordable! There are so many new products I can’t reviews them all, but here are my picks for the best of the best:
The most fun collection of all is the Physicians Formula Happy Booster Glow & Mood Boosting collection of bronzers, blushers and even lipstick. These don’t just beautify, they actually have a “happy boost blend” of ingredients that can boost your mood! Happy skin is derived from Arctic Rose and it mimics the effect of endorphins that give you a sense of well being and pleasure. You might also find that you feel better because the products make you look better took but there is evidence that some of the ingredients in these beauty products can be real mood boosters. Euphoryl is rich in Omega-3 (an anti-depressant) that has been linked to the production of dopamine, which also promotes a feeling of well being, as does a blend of violet floral notes that are supposed to invigorate your mood. Murumuru seed butter and Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter make your skin feel silky, and provide luminescence. Maybe it’s these mood enhancing botanicals with beautifully packaged, beautiful color cosmetics that make you feel better….but in any case you’ll smile when you pass a mirror because you look so good!
The bronzer is available in two shades: Bronze/Natural and Bronze/Rose The sheer bronzers are believable, and you can use the little hearts on the side for contour. blush or highlight, or just swish the included brush (cleverly tucked into the bottom of the bronzer compact) and get all over color.
The mood boosting blush also comes in an attractive, red metallic, mirrored compact (with included brush in the bottom of the compact). It’s available in four shades: Rose, Natural and two newbies: Pink (bright shades of pink) and Warm (subdued mauve-and browned pinks). Maybe it’s the hot pink metallic compacts with the little mini brushes in pink and red, and the scattering of little embossed hearts that improve your mood, but somehow, the subtle scent is also energizing in a mystical way. The blushes are sheer so you can’t ‘t go wrong with any of the colors) and they look natural. You will crack a smile.
The Happy Booster Glow & Mood Boosting Lipstick has the same happy booster ingredients as the other products, but the Lipstick is a triple-core beauty that wows with a hot pink case and a lipstick embossed with a heart. There are two colors, Rose and Nude, and each has three colors that work together to provide color and shine, plus a silky, moisturizing feel. There are also collagen boosting peptides that help make lips look plump and healthy. Alas, my mood didn’t improve when I tried “Rose.” It looked pretty enough in the tube, but it didn’t provide enough coverage to deal with my dry, winter weary lips. Exfoliation would help make the color look smoother, but I felt the coverage would still be spotty. “Nude” is a soft natural but also semi sheer. The Happy Booster Glow & Mood Boosting Lipstick is $8.95 the Blush is $11.95 and the Bronzer & Blush are $13.95 available at drug and mass market retailers.
Another unique collection from Physicians Formula is the pH Matchmaker line. These products of Blush,, Bronzer and Lip Gloss do some very unique and welcome things. For starters, the products react to your natural skin pH to create a supposed color match to your skin tone. In just under a minute you can see the color develop. It might not exactly be the color you expect, but it will be the one your skin produces. It’s fun and exciting! These also have unique packaging, as they have LED lights, literally embedded in the packaging. These are great for applying your makeup in areas with low lighting. The light in the cap of the gloss operates with a push button at the top (the powder compacts have a switch on the side), but the LED lights are actually powerful enough to light your entire face (or use it to find your keys in the dark). The lipgloss is shiny and silky, with a Flourescein based dye that senses the Ph level of your lips to help develop your custom color, and photochromatic powders adjust so that your unique tints look the same inside and outside. . The gloss is silky and nice to wear, hypoallergenic, fragrance free, gluten free, paraben free and dermatologist approved. Great for those with sensitive skin. The shades are light pink and pink. On my skin, “Pink” produced a hot fuchsia shade that has never been my most flattering choice, no matter what the pH in my lips, determined. Perhaps the light pink would have been a bit less “out there” The gloss is $9.95.
I had similar issues with the pH Powered Blush in Natural and Rose. The slightly shimmery rose was beautiful and sheer, but turned very bright on my ruddy skin. However, I couldn’t help loving the mirrored compact with an on/off switch on the side of the mirror just like a mini makeup mirror. The 14 hour wear may be asking a lot of a blush, but it did seem to last all day. For me, “Natural” tint would have been a better choice.
There is also a light-up, pH activated bronzer in two shades ($ 14.95). The compact is so amazing, and this time, the color just worked, as advertised. Although I would generally try the light bronzer, the standard bronzer color looked amazingly fine. I loved everything about it, down to the ombre-tinted brush that fits neatly into the bottom of the square, mirrored, light-up compact. These are exceptional especially for the price. This pH matchmaker bronzer may be one of the first bronzers I’ve ever tried that made me look sun kissed, not orange.
Another collection from Physicians Formula is Youthful Wear. This collection claims to be the first ever cosmeceutical collection of products that simultaneously even out skin tone while actively fighting the visible signs of aging. There is a Youth-Boosting Powder ($13.95), a Concealer ($12.95) and a Foundation + Brush ($14.95). What all three of these products have in common is encapsulated Ceramide3 & Hylarunoic acid that act like micro-sponges to deliver moisture, plus microspheres of magnesium silicate & silica (to create a soft focus that blurs fine lines and also help to absorb excess oils), plus lamanaria algae extract (rich in proteins, polysaccharides, carotenes and vitamins, to tone, moisturize, support collagen production and protect the skin. All are paraben free, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and dermatologist approved for all skin types. Experts nearly always apply foundation with a brush, but the brush absorbs a lot of the product, so you need to use a heavier hand than you might normally, or just smooth it on with your fingers. The foundation is available in three shades: fair, light and medium. The light is perfect for light to medium skin tones. The foundation also has SPF 15 to help minimally protect skin. While I’m not sure my skin really looked up to 10 years younger in an instant, my complexion did look much smoother. In fact, it looked nearly flawless. I loved the velvety (not dry or harsh) finish that looked like it had been applied by a pro, when it was just done by me! The Youth Boosting Concealer has a clever 2-in-one stick and cream concealer in one slim tube. The correcting cream applied with a wand was impressive. Silky and easy to use. The covering stick was even more fabulous, silky and easy to apply, covering all major flaws but not becoming cake-y or obvious. A unique roller ball built right into the top helps you blend the product in, although you can easily do so with ouur fingertip or a brush as well. This also has 1.96% zinc oxide for spf 15 coverage . There are two shades light + Yellow and Light + Light which will flatter most light to medium complexions. This concealer is truly impressive. Finally there is a Youth-Boosting powder for $13.95 that is available in mattify translucent or illuminating translucent. These sheer powders add the finishing touch, blending into the skin with the included brush (in the bottom of the metallic purple compact with mirror). While it may not make very mature skin look all that much younger at a glance, it certainly makes every complexion look better. This is a very impressive collection that does good things for skin while making skin look very very good.
New and lovely on it’s own is the Physicians Formula Cashmere Wear Ultra-Smoothing Blush. In a square box with a clear window to showcase the cable knit (of the cashmere powder, get it?) is a new pink blush made with 100% pure cashmere extract to help moisturize the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also skin loving is the sodium hylauronate that moisturizes, and the soft focus pearls that work to diffuse any fine lines and wrinkles just a bit more. The silky and sheer blush is sectioned into four different cable textures with two types of pink blush. The largest cable is a dark Raspberry that’s bold, but sheer, and the other three “cables” are a soft pink. You can wear the different cables together, or pick the one you want for a deeper or lighter blush. For just $12.95 it’s a lovely blush in a universally believable color, and the little pink tassel that opens the top is a cute, luxe touch, As with the other Physicians Formula powder compacts, the bottom of this one opens up to reveal a nice mirror, and an equally nice, mini blush brush. Like the cashmere for which it’s named, this is a soft blush that won’t cost you a week’s wages — but it looks like it did!
Also impressive is the Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Airbrushing Pressed Powder ($13.95) in a stuning, teal metallic compact with interior mirror in the bottom, along with a mini kabuki brush applicator. The embossed powder looks like waves om the desert sand but it won’t make your skin look dry. It is available in translucent, creamy natural and a slightly deeper, natural beige. For those who love mineral based makeup, this is going to be a must have. The SPF 30 powder (featuring 15% titanium dioxide and 10% zinc oxide) visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pores and sun damage and supposedly leaves a 16 hour airbrushed finish to skin (yes, it is long lasting). This exceptional, mineral based powder also offers a smoothing, firming and lightening effect. The SPF 30 makes it perfect for travel and for those occasions when you want your skin to look “polished” but not “done.” The formula is excellent for all skin types, but especially acne prone or sensitive skin. Gingko Biloba and green tea plus soothing plant extracts and skin-smoothing antioxidants of chamomile and ginseng, help make skin look and feel good, along with nourishing Vitamins C & E. But the main reason to buy it besides the long wear and sun protection, is that this talc-free formula makes skin look amazing without any effort, It is going to be your newest can’t-leave-home-without-it product this season!
The list of products that are new and notable from Physicians formula goes on an on …… There is also a very clever, Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Season to Season Bronzer ($14.95). What makes this one special is that it’s four bronzers in one — a specific color for each season: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall (plus a round bit of gold in the middle for highlight or drama), or you can mix and match them to suit your needs. I’ve never seen another bronzer packaged like this one. It is available in two shades: light to medium and medium to dark, While the light to medium still seemed a bit too “baked” for my taste in the Summer and Fall sections, it will be perfect for those who are not “tan averse” and who really like that browned glow. The idea is great, and the stain-free and odor free product has unique a special “Glow Activator Technology” that is a custom infusion of vitamins, moisturizers and antioxidants featuring kapi kacchu seeds and polysaccharides. They moisturize while keeping the “tan” longer lasting (the longer you use it). Ceratonia siliqua from the carob tree works with the skin to naturally enhance the bronzer tones and bronzing micro-pearls add additional allure to help your bronze glow look luminous. If you love bronzers, having four different options to play with and mix, is heaven. Yep! It’s pretty cool!
Physicians formula has plenty of goodies for the eyes as well, from palettes of pressed powder shadows in trendy collections, to Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Shadow and Liner Trio ($10.95), that are just plain fun to use. Four sets of three shadows enhance blue, brown, green and hazel eyes. Of course you can pick any one you choose. But the soft slimline pencils in mini sizes are great for travel and purse. Each one of these Kohl Kajal eye liner pencils delivers soft easy to apply, intense color. Each trio has a black pencil because it’s a classic, and then two other shades in Natural and “Playful” (a more trendy shade). They are blendable but also 100% waterproof. Although the trio is specifically designed to line the inner rim of the eyelid, they make a perfect dramatic liner for the top and bottom lash line, too. Just be careful not to press on them too harshly, as they are soft. For those who can’t even handle a soft kajal pencil liner with ease, there is a new Eye Booster 2 -in-1 lash boosting felt tip eyeliner that even has an eyeliner serum infused into it! This liner is so easy to use, it’s ridiculous. You can’t make a mistake. It’s just like coloring a line on a piece of paper, only your eyelids are the “paper.” The liner is available in four colors: black, deep brown, ultra black and smoky grey (love this deep but not harsh grey). They’re long lasting but wash off fairly easily. While you are beautifying your lashes, the serum with high tech ingredients, goes right to work at the base of your lashes, to deliver nourishment. The formula is hypoallergenic, fragrance free, paraben free, gluten free and safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. That might be a first! Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 is a key ingredient in the serum. so while you’re making yp your eyes, you may soon start to see longer, fuller lashes. While I’ll leave it up to you to decide if you see instant results, after one week the claim is that 100% of women saw enhanced lashes. In the past, these types of high tech lash enhancing serums cost a fortune, but this multi-tasker is just $10.95. That is amazing! Seriously, truly amazing.
And also amazing is that Physicians Formula products are available everywhere in mass market retail outlets and drug stores. You will definitely want some, or all! You can also learn more about all of the products on the Physicians Formula Web Site: www.physiciansformula.com
