Wouldn’t it be great if you could have younger-looking, healthier skin without any real effort? Can you really remove that regretted tattoo without a struggle? Pico Genesis treatments do these things, and more.
Laser treatments to improve your skin’s appearance and health get better and easier all the time.
If you read my skincare features you know I’ve tried some of the best skin-enhancing treatments and lasers available. * read all of my reports (and view before and after results) for Halo, Fraxel, and the Strawberry laser by typing those names into the search box, upper right-hand side of this page.
Multi-Tasking Pico Genesis:
In the past few months, I’ve been on a journey to improve the skin on my hands and decollete with a laser treatment called PICO Genesis. I wanted to try the Pico laser by Cutera, because it is so personalized to your skin’s condition and your skincare goals,
The Pico laser does more than one thing.
A Pico Resolve treatment helps you get younger looking skin by encouraging collagen production and brightening your complexion.
It can also reduce the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.
Pico Genesis Enlighten removes pigmentation from dark spots and even those unwanted tattoos with dark colors (e.g. green, blue, black and some red ink).
How Does It Work?
Merriam-Webster dictionary describes the word genesis as: “the origin or coming into being of something.” It’s a perfect description of Pico Genesis by Cutera with “lunch hour” treatments that can significantly improve the look of your skin.
Pico lasers combine two highly effective wavelengths in ultra-short pulses that create an intense, non-thermal, photomechanical disruption and remodeling of the upper dermis.
It’s an oversimplification, but the non-technical explanation is that lasers such as Halo and Pico Genesis get your skin working from within to improve itself as the laser can get beneath the upper layers of your skin. By making microscopic wounds that your body reacts to collagen is enhanced and better-looking skin emerges.
You can choose a couple of more gentle treatments or more aggressive ones. The more aggressive the treatment, the more you may experience some temporarily unpleasant side effects such as itching and redness. What type and how many Pico Genesis treatments your skin requires, is up to you and your doctor.
My Pico Genesis Journey
As with any skincare treatment, Pico Genesis treatments are personalized to the individual, based on your doctor’s recommendations. The skill and experience of your doctor that will help you determine what you need.
The key to success with any laser is to have confidence in the person handling it. I was fortunate to be treated by an expert, Dr. Bradley Bloom of Skin and Laser Surgery Specialists in NYC. Dr. Bloom is not just an expert, he’s caring and thorough and reassuring and full of information so you can understand what’s going on.
If you can’t get an appointment with Dr. Bloom, please do your research and find the best person in your area, not the cheapest or a laser “party” or because you have a discount.
My treatment plan with Dr. Bloom consisted of three sessions of what I’m calling “Pico Genesis Part I (Resolve) and two sessions of Pico spot removal “Pico Genesis part II” (Enlighten) on both my hands and decollete. As an editor writing on a deadline, I opted for the most aggressive treatments but this might not be the right choice for everyone (click on “Read More” to get the full story).
Dr.Bloom also removed some red veins from the side of my nose and on my chin with another laser (not part of the Pico Genesis treatments).
Picoway Resolve, uses the shortest laser pulse available measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second) to deal with the signs of aging.
Is There Pain?
I’m always asked if laser treatments are painful. This is highly subjective, but I’ve never been uncomfortable as long as the numbing cream was applied to the areas being treated. This cream takes about 20-30 minutes to work, and with it, discomfort was about a 2 out of 10.
When’s A Good Time?
Any time is a good time to do a laser treatment. I’ve had laser treatments in every season. For some, warm weather is more challenging as more of your skin is exposed. You need to use a lot of SPF and keep the treated areas covered as much as possible. Using a lot of SPF is a must-do, anyway, but covering up the healing skin avoided lots of questions from those around me.

Did you get a tattoo in a “what was I thinking?” moment? the PICO laser is FDA cleared for a wide range of tattoos. It’s fast, safe, effective and safe for all skin tones.
Pico Enlighten delivers energy to the targeted ink in ultra-short pulses that are so fast, they’re measured in picoseconds — that’s one trillionth of a second! This ultra-fast delivery of concentrated, high-power energy shatters even the tiniest of ink particles and makes it easier for the body to clear the tattoo ink from almost every color.
Although I don’t have any tattoos, years of sun damage left my decollete and hands with dark spots. Dr. Bloom used the PICO laser to remove the spots using essentially the same technique as removing tattoos. Wait till you see my “after” photo!
There’s little I can report in terms of a downside, but things can happen that you don’t anticipate. I have very sensitive skin. The treatments made my skin very red for a few days and the spot removal caused blistering. As a result, as my body reacted, I had a few days of pretty intense, miserable itching and redness.
The worst part is that I couldn’t scratch for fear of infection or worse, scarring. To help the healing process, I spaced out my treatments and used a prescription cortisone for the itching prescribed by Dr. Bloom. I also used a mass-market product: Serica Moisturizing Scar Fomula.
It has Pracaxi oil, a highly moisturizing ingredient derived from the seed of the (Pracaxi) tree found in the Amazon rainforest, plus Patula Oil from Madagascar and a silicone polymer network that helps keep skin hydrated. This really helped deal with dry, itchy skin and I am sure it helped to hasten my healing process. I also think it also really helped keep my blisters from scarring.
Blisters and severe itching aren’t the norm. In fact, Dr. Bloom assured me that it’s rare (lucky me!). But if you are worried opt for less aggressive treatments, more frequently. As I said before, it’s a decision you’ll make with your doctor.
I received all of my treatments for editorial purposes. The cost generally ranges from $500 – $750 per treatment, depending on your requirements, who is doing the treatment, and your location.
Laser treatments are a bit of a miracle. when you choose someone like Dr. Bloom with the skill and experience to know which laser treatment is best for your particular skin concerns and use the laser properly. Everyone’s experience will be different, but although your skin will differ from mine, everyone can expect to significantly improve the look of your skin with laser treatments like Pico Genesis.
These results in person are even better than the photos. If your skin is damaged, blotchy look older than it should, or if you have a tattoo you now regret, PICO is definitely worth it as long as you have some disposable income to spare.
