Project Glimmer: Your Accessories Can Be A “Joy to the World”
Editor’s Note: When Jenni Bingham, Deputy Director of ProjectGlimmer.org approached me about Project Glimmer and asked if I’d post something on advicesisters.com about it for #GivingTuesday I was immediately inspired. This is the time of year to open our hearts to those who are less fortunate.
So many of us love fashion, makeup, and accessories. How many of us have “extras” that we don’t need or want?
To us they’re just items that lie unused and clutter our closets and drawers. But to a young girl who has nothing, those very same items could bring untold joy.
Please take a moment to read Sonja Perkin’s guest post below, and consider taking contacting ProjectGlimmer and taking action, joining in this holiday season and throughout the year.
Advicesisters.com will be getting involved too. If you want be part of our Advice Sisters Project Glimmer efforts throughout 2017, join our mailing list (on the right hand side of our page). We’ll contact you when we’re ready to roll! – Alison Blackman, Editor in Chief, advicesisters.com
Give A Little Glimmer this #GivingTuesday
By Sonja Hoel Perkins, Founder Project Glimmer
I started ProjectGlimmer in 2009 after attending a holiday benefit for the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program. d learned that while there were plenty of gifts for kids, there were never enough gifts for teenage girls.
I learned that while there were plenty of gifts for kids, there were never enough gifts for teenage girls.
Inspired by the need, I launched the first “Glimmer Drive” and encouraged my friends and family to donate their gently used costume jewelry and purses, gift cards, and new make-up and beauty products.
I suggested they do that first, then box them up.
Since that day, we have given more than 135,000 gifts to thousands of women and girls nationwide through individuals and our corporate partners.
These are more than just gifts. By letting these at-risk teenage girls and women know their community cares, we give them dignity, joy and inspire them to believe in themselves.
Project Glimmer
When these young girls and women feel valued by their community, they feel worthy and when a girl believes in herself she can make a positive change in the world.
I hope you are inspired to get involved with Project Glimmer!
Here are a few ideas for the season:
● Make a donation. A monetary donation helps ProjectGlimmer.org fulfill its mission to inspire young women to believe in themselves.
● Give a gift! Do you have extra jewelry or other accessories laying around? Clear out the drawers and closets and bring a little glimmer to a young woman’s holiday.
● Host A Glimmer Drive! It’s the same concept as a toy drive, except the gifts collected are new or like new jewelry, makeup, beauty products, gift cards and accessories. It’s a fun addition to any holiday party that you can do in 4 easy steps.
In addition to the holiday season, we give gifts for Mother’s Day, Birthdays and Graduation gifts. We hope that you connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @ProjectGlimmer & #GiveGlimmer or visit our website (www.ProjectGlimmer.org) to learn more.
Thank you!
