Redken Best Hair Trends Fall 2016: Individuality Rules!
It is just Summer, but when it comes to the fashion and beauty (and hair) world, we’re already all about Fall. We adore the easy to understand explanations that editors get from Guido Palau, Redken’s Global Creative Director. This uber-talented and charming man works his magic on runways throughout the world. We’re happy to share a taste of what you’ll find for hair this Fall/Winter with a Trend report (thanks to Redken) that advicesisters.com thinks will be useful starting now, to help you figure out what looks you’ll want to create for yourself. According to Guido, the 2016 Fall trends will be all about #individuality. He opines that designers are loking at different types of people and different types of hairstyles. You can wear your hair in a way that flatters and celebrates you. That’s good news for us all! @GUIDOPALAU REDKEN GLOBAL CREATIVE DIRECTOR #INDIVIDUALITY
From customized choppy cuts at Alexander Wang to personalized hair accessories at Dolce & Gabbana, the season’s coolest looks celebrated individuality. “It used to be all about one kind of girl and one kind of hair, but now we’re seeing a mixture of personalities and beauties. It reinforces the individuality of every model,” says Guido.
@DOLCEGABBANA: The secret to lasting hold for every hair type: forceful 23 super strength hairspray. At Alexander Wang, Guido used wax blast 10 high impact finishing spray-wax on hair after air-drying. Perfect for enhancing texture on any style!
@AKRISOFFICIAL “Each look at Akris was individual,” says Guido. “We wanted to celebrate and emphasize varying hair textures. Depending on hair type, I either added texture with wind blown 05 dry finishing spray or calmed it down with Glow Dry style enhancing blow-dry oil.”
@ISABELMARANT @ALEXANDERWANGNY @CALVINKLEIN #EFFORTLESS Some of the season’s chicest styles combined an effortless look with little touches that added personality—a bit of height around the face at Lanvin, simple hair bands at Versace. “The idea of achieving glamour in a way that looks easy is very relevant now,” says Guido. “It has an ease that looks untouched and can be emphasized with the right cut, condition of the hair, and products.”
@LANVINOFFICIAL @VERSACE_OFFICIAL The hair at Lanvin had an effortless look with a slightly retro feel. Guido used guts 10 volume spray foam at the forehead and sides to add 80s-inspired root lift. Effortless style is even easier when you prime hair first! Apply Pillow Proof Blow Dry Primer Cream to damp hair before you blow-dry to nourish and protect each strand.
@RALPHLAUREN “At Ralph Lauren there was a real sense of ease to the glamour,” says Guido. “I used Beach Envy Volume Texturizing Shampoo and Conditioner to create great texture, then let hair dry naturally.”
@BOTTEGAVENETA #KNOTS Knots, chignons and twists tied up our attention on the runways, from a high-drama topknot at Sacai to a must-try chignon twinset at Christian Dior. The key to every style: Redken hairspray. Choose a lower control level for light hold and a higher level for lasting control but zero crunch. “It’s amazing how many different things you can do with a knot, and it’s something women can easily do themselves,” says Guido. “They’re a great look for day-old or just-left-the-gym hair. There’s no need to shampoo before styling.”
@MAISONVALENTINO @SACAIOFFICIAL To create the structured ballerina chignon at Valentino, Guido used triple take 32 extreme high-hold hairspray to add grip and texture. Want the sleek, yet tousled knot seen at Bottega Veneta? Blow-dry with satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion for a smooth, frizz-free finish.
@ALBERTAFERRETTI “At Alberta Ferretti, the clothes are romantic and beautiful, so the hair needed a little edge. I applied One United to dampen the hair and caughtin-the-moment look,” says Guido.
@DIOR “This is an elegant, polished Dior woman but with a simple and young charm. I created two small knots, almost like a double chignon. I used guts 10 volume spray foam to add volume and forceful 23 super strength hairspray to hold the look in place,” says Guido.
@TORYBURCH #PONYTAILS Ponytails were on parade this season, from sleek and shiny lengths to chic loops that mimicked a glammed-up version of post-gym hair. “The ponytail will never be out of fashion,” says Guido. “It can be super-sophisticated, super-casual or anything you want it to be with the help of products.”
@COACH @HUGOBOSS Create the messy, textured pony seen at Coach with Beach Envy Volume Texturizing Shampoo and Conditioner and wax blast 10 high impact finishing spray-wax. At Hugo Boss, Guido prepped hair with Pillow Proof Blow Dry Primer Cream to prime and protect the hair before creating a cool looped pony.
@VICTORIABECKHAM “Victoria Beckham has a very minimal, wearable idea of beauty,” says Guido. “We amped up the everyday ponytail into something special with the help of satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion and triple take 32 extreme high-hold hairspray.”
@PRADA #GOTHIC From gothic waves to punk texture adorned with jewels, this season’s most standout looks showcased romance with a serious edge. “The look was very extreme at Marc Jacobs with the finger waves, but at Prada, it was a broken-down romance using curl and wave to create a darker look,” says Guido.
@WORLDMCQUEEN @MARCJACOBS The perfect way to prep hair for a romantic yet romantic style as seen at Alexander McQueen: All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner. At Marc Jacobs, hardwear 16 super strong sculpting gel gave Guido the strong hold and shine he needed to create dramatic finger waves.
@ALBERTAFERRETTI “At Alberta Ferretti, the clothes are romantic and beautiful, so the hair needed a little edge. I applied One United to dampen the hair and create a caught-in-the-moment look,” says Guido.
Hairstylists of the 1920s probably never imagined that finger waves would be trending on Instagram almost a century later! The modern version, created by Guido, borrows the signature sculpted waves from the iconic Jazz Age look, but kicks-up the edge factor by leaving the ends natural and unrefined. MARC JACOBS LOOK OF THE SEASON: NEW YORK KEY PRODUCTS: · hardwear 16 super-strong sculpting gel · forceful 23 super strength hairspray GET THE LOOK: 1. Use a comb to create a clean center part on dry hair. 2. Starting one inch above the ear, take a horizontal section and generously apply hardwear 16 super-strong sculpting gel. Repeat on both sides until you reach the top of the head. 3. Apply hardwear 16 to the center part, then apply more gel to a comb and press hair down on either side of the part to flatten. 4. Starting at hairline at the crown of the head, simultaneously use your fingers and a comb to push hair up, creating a finger-wave effect. Make sure hardwear 16 is covering your fingers and the comb at all times. 5. Continue the wave effect throughout the section, using your fingers to hold down hair while the comb brushes downwards on either side. Use pins to hold each wave in place. 6. After completing each section, liberally spray forceful 23 super strength hairspray for hold and shine. 7. Once you’ve reached the top of each ear, leave remaining hair untouched and natural. 8. Gently blow-dry to harden the gel and create a strong, lasting, shape with shine.
@MARCJACOBS “This look is a total top-tobottom fun, crazy Marc Jacobs girl. I created finger waves using hardwear 16, but I modernized the look by leaving the ends of the hair alone. It feels gothic and almost boyish.”
When it comes to hair accessories, Guido’s philosophy is refreshingly simple: “They can be vintage and they don’t need to be expensive.” Dig into your jewel box (or do some flea-market shopping!) and create your own version of this punky/romantic hybrid.
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN LOOK OF THE SEASON: LONDON KEY PRODUCTS: · All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner · shine flash 02 glistening mist · wind blown 05 dry finishing spray · guts 10 volume spray foam GET THE LOOK: 1. Wash and condition hair using All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner. 2. On damp hair, apply guts 10 volume spray foam to roots. Rough-dry hair using hands. 3. Once hair is dry, create a messy middle part using fingers. Liberally spray wind blown 05 dry finishing spray throughout and brush through. 4. Divide hair into two even sections in the back. Cross one section underneath the other, pulling toward the crown and ensuring that the hair follows along the hairline. 5. Secure section flat against the head using several pins, leaving the ends loose, stiff and placed at the middle of the crown. 6. Repeat the same process on the other side of the head with the remaining half of hair, then add your hair accessories. 7. Wet fingers with water and gently pull the ends and sides to create a slightly messy and haphazard look. Finish by misting shine flash 02 glistening mist throughout.
@WORLDMCQUEEN “The look is romantic because it has soft features, but there’s also a randomness and wrongness to it, which makes it punky. The more eccentric a look is, the more style it has! I used guts 10 to create a rough texture, then used wind blown 05 to add even more texture.” @GUIDOPALAU A bold red lip paired with deconstructed, wet-looking curls made for a thoroughly modern and seriously edgy romantic look. Guido reinvented the classic curling iron set with a new finish and texture juxtaposition (flat and curly on the same head) that was unlike anything else seen this season.

@GUIDOPALAU: One hairstyle didn’t fit all at Isabel Marant this season, where Guido created a range of gorgeous styles to complement the Parisian “cool girl” looks that Marant sent down the runway. There’s a boyishness to Isabel’s clothes that’s always apparent, and the hair exemplifies this with a 50s twist.”
