Redken’s new fab four: the Fashion Styling Collection

The Advice Sisters recently highlighted hairstylist extraordinare Guido’s wedding and special events hair how-to using some of the products from the new Redken runway fashion styling collection, and The Advice Sisters hope the gorgeous photos of models inspired you to try the DIY. But I wanted to talk to you a little more about the new, Redken Fashion Collection products that helped make the runway looks, possible. I first saw prototypes of the products in December, at the holiday preview/party that Redken has for editors every year, featuring the fabulous Guido, in person. I personally put some of the Metal Fix 08 metallic liquid pomade in my hair that night and couldn’t wait for the actual products to be available. It was so easy to use, and the glimmer–wow!
In case you haven’t heard about Guido (although if you read my reviews regularly, you know how much I admire him), Guido is not just Redken’s Global Styling Director, he’s created runway hair styles for so, so so many of the designers yo know and love including: Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Lanvin and many more.

Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse
A gel that magically transforms into the most dramatic volumizing mousse for high-fashion fullness, oversized volume and lasting hold. “With Stay High 18, you get the hold of a gel and the airiness of a mousse. Whether you want a little bit of root lift or a full head of volume, this is your go-to product,” says Guido. I’m not personally a mouse fan, but this one does the job, and does it well. If you need to to satisfy your style’s requirements, it’s a great choice for overall fullness and lift where you need it. How to use: Emulsify Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse in your hands until it transforms into a rich mousse. Apply section by section to damp hair, focusing on the roots. Comb through to distribute evenly, then blow-dry and style as desired. Try it on an elegant updo!
Short Sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel
A touchable texturizing formula gives high-hold gel a fashion twist with a sleek or textured finish. “With short cuts, you need to create a personality, whether it’s romantic or rock ‘n’ roll. Short Sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel gives you hold and sheen, and enhances short hair with life and dimension,” says Guido. If your hair is short you really need a product to keep it stylish and avoid “helmet hair” or “mom hair.” Don’t let it flop! The gel is lightweight, not sticky, and no one will know it’s on your hair but you. It’s also good for taming a bit of frizz around the front part of my hair, and I’d think it would be helpful to deal with bangs that are growing out, too. How to use: Apply a small amount of Short Sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel evenly throughout hair. Blowdry and style as desired. To enhance texture and definition, apply another small amount of product.
Braid Aid 03 braid defining lotion
The ultimate braiding product that defines braids and twists, adds grip for easy braiding and helps braids last longer. “Braids are a runway staple, but so often they slip or don’t hold well. Braid Aid 03 fixes that and allows you to achieve any type of braid or twist,” says Guido. Braids are truly “in” but if you’ve ever tried to braid your hair you know that making the braid is just the first part. Keeping it braided is another thing, entirely, as hair tends to work itself out of braids just as you move around. To keep your braid sleek, Braid Aid is the answer! It also works to keep ponytails sleek, just use a little bit to keep hair in check. How to use: Emulsify in your hands and work 3 – 5 pumps of Braid Aid 03 braid defining lotion through the mid-lengths and ends. Braid or twist as desired, securing with an elastic. Reapply throughout the day as needed.

Metal Fix 08 metallic liquid pomade
For runway-ready silver and gold effects, this pomade is ideal for sleek styles and achieves a high-fashion metallic shimmer. “When I’m working backstage, I think of hair as a material that can be reinvented. With Metal Fix 08, I can add a flash of gold or silver for a fashion-forward feeling,” says Guido. This product was so much fun to use, I wanted to take the prototype sample home with me (but wasn’t able to). Now it’s here, and it’s not just a styling pomade, it’s a way to make any hair style just a bit more glam. It isn’t glittery, but you can make it seriously metallic like on the runway by using a lot of it and layering it on in either the gold version or the silver version. But a bit just smoothed on your strands (as I did at the holiday party) makes hair festive and it glints in the light — even artificial light. This is the ultimate glam product! How to use: Use your index finger to paint on Metal Fix 08 metallic liquid pomade in short, quick strokes. To build intensity, allow each layer to dry, and then reapply. Tip: use a small color brush to create a metallic design.
