“To sleep, perchance to dream..”
This is a famous line from Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet.
But the Bard didn’t know about EarlySense Live.
It really does show if you are sleeping and dreaming!
A Review by Alison Blackman
What are You Really Doing At Night?
Have you ever gone to sleep thinking you slept all night, but when you wake up you feel exhausted?
If this describes your mornings and you want to find out what why you’re tired when you wake, you can be hooked up to a ton of electrodes in a sleep clinic.
Or you can try LIVE by EarlySense.
EarlySense Live is a slim sensor about the size of a frisbee that you plug into an outlet and slip under your mattress.
This device not only tracks your sleep cycles (light, heavy, REM, out of bed, etc.) but it also tracks your vitals physicalcial activity such as heart rate, breathing, movements, and stress levels.
After using LIVE for a few weeks it revealed a shocking truth.
I wasn’t sleeping much at all even though I thought I slept soundly.
In fact, I was awake or in light sleep a lot of the night.
No Wires or Electrodes
EarlySense Live is supposedly based on the same contactless monitoring technology that has been used in US hospitals and clinics for the last decade.
One of the great things about this sleep monitor is that you can find out about your sleep patterns at home without wires or electrodes.
You simply go to sleep on your bed with the paired sensor under your mattress. The free down-loadable app (IOS and Android) records exactly what goes on as you sleep.
Why Use A Sleep Monitor?
It appears that the primary market for EarlySense Live is for family members to monitor a loved one.
For an additional fee per month, up to five people can share information and feel secure that “Grandma” or “Dad” is safe and sound in bed.
But the real bonus for the rest of us is that it is really a way to learn about your sleep patterns, and how to manage your health better.
If you’re someone who wakes up tired and doesn’t know why, the monitoring of your sleep patterns, over time, will teach you how to make changes that can help you get a better night’s sleep.
How LIVE Works
It is almost as simple as plugging in the unit and putting it under your mattress.
Then you simply lie down to sleep.
Heart rate, heart rate variability, breathing, movement, stress, and sleep patterns are extracted from the signals using patented algorithms.
Data analysis occurs in the cloud and results are displayed on the LIVE app in real-time.
When you wake up you will immediately see what your body did while you were sleeping (or not).
A “diary” function on the app lets you record some minimal information about the things that might impact your sleep that night (e.g. heavy meal, stressful day, alcohol).
There is even a stress indicator (I watched my go into the red more than once).
In the morning, the truth is revealed about how much you slept… and more.
The disk is portable so you can take it with you when you travel.
The app also identifies changes in your patterns and lets you know when there are significant changes in your sleep patterns.
One night I got an alert that I had stopped breathing…scary!
If you get an alert you can take action or even consult a healthcare professional before a real problem develops.
Testing Early Sense Live
The app was super easy to set up, but like many tech gadgets, it can have glitches.
I tried two versions of the LIVE disk. The first one sometimes didn’t understand that I was lying on top of it. The new version (with updated software) works perfectly
The first one sometimes didn’t understand that I was lying on top of it. The new version (with updated software) works perfectly
LIVE works with Bluetooth, so you need to keep your phone on during the night. ith the app close enough to your bed for it to work.
For most people, this isn’t an issue, but I don’t have a phone plug near my bed, so my phone is already nearly dead or I have to keep it on a power bank all night.
Also, interpreting more than the most basic data could require someone that really understands sleep patterns.
I’m not a doctor so I can’t really interpret all the things that are going on in my body while I am sleeping.
But, over time, I can see when I’ve had a good night or a bad night right there in front of me, and correlate that with how I feel all day.
EarlySense Live retails for $199 or $169 plus $10 per month for a monitoring subscription
Getting a better nights’ sleep or knowing your loved ones are ok…that is…priceless!
