Back in the Fall of 2008, I was introduced to a unique alternative to a sweater, cape or wrap, called “The Shōul” by Casual Essentials. It’s a soft, lightweight hybrid of a wrap and a cape, that keeps away the chill, without looking dowdy. The original one I reviewed felt like soft cashmere, but it was actually a lightweight, washable acrylic knit. Now there’s a cashmere blend version that’s 5% cashmere, 50% Vicose and 45% nylon.
Both versions are soft and lighweight, with a ribbed panel featuring vertical lines around the lower edge for eye appeal. I didn’t think there was a way to improve on the soft and comfortable acrylic version, but I love the even softer, cashmere blend one. It feels silky soft on skin, and is appropriate even over a dressy, holiday gown.
The design and the concept are simple. Literally throw it on over your shoulders (it’s designed to stay there) or fasten it around your waist if you’re getting too warm. You can tie the sides together at the front, as many trendy sweaters do, or fling one side over your shoulder like a traditional shawl.
What’s great about the Shōul is not just it’s versatility, but the fact that it is one size fits all, which means even expectant mothers (whose own sweaters no longer close) can wear it. When you’re not wearing the Shōul” you can fold it up flat for travel, held neatly with it’s own metal keeper clip. You can even use the folded-up Shōul as a pillow if you’re desparate!
