“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” Every bride knows this phrase which instructs her to add these “good luck” talismans to her person, on her wedding day.
Now, Designer Oscar de la Renta has taken the phrase and turned it into something new in fragrance, called: “Something Blue.”
The fragrance was designed by Frank Vöelkl and Ilias Ermenidis of Firmenich in partnership with Ann Gottleib and of course it has weddings and brides as the main theme. So it’s no surprise that the notes focus on florals that are associated with weddings, brides, and romance.

Base Notes
- Top notes: Italian bergamot, Mandarin, Neroli, Linden blossom
- Heart notes: Stephanotis, Fleur de narcisse, Lily of the valley, Kiss of lychee
- Base notes: Ambrette seeds, White musk, Ambergris, Cashmere woods, Bourbon vanilla
Something Blue Eau de Parfum starts with a bright burst of mandarin and linden blossom, but the romantic heart becomes quickly apparent: stephanotis (a classic white wedding flower that is grown in de la Renta’s own country garden–and the signature of this fragrance) married to Lily of the Valley (also known as “wedding bells”) and a bit of lychee. To keep the fragrance a bit sensual however, the bottom notes include bourbon vanilla and white musk. Other notes listed include neroli, linden blossom, narcisse, lychee, cashmere woods, and ambrette seeds.
White florals can sometimes be overpoweringly sweet or heavy, but this fragrance is quite light and feminine and almost “fresh.” Of course it will appeal to brides who will relate to the entire presentation as a special scent for their special moment, but on a practical note, it’s a nice warm weather fragrance for everyone. It didn’t last very long on my skin, but everyone’s body chemistry is different. What it did leave behind on drydown, was very lovely.
Women who love the Oscar de la Renta but who might not be able to afford his dresses, can still take a little of his couture style with them on their special day (or any day) by wearing this scent. The light blue and white outer carton was inspired by camellia lace, a signature fabric used in Oscar del la Renta’s bridal collection, and the round clear glass bottle has a light blue top that mimics the stone “larimar” (for that “something blue”). Larimar, I’m told, is a favorite of the designer, and it’s found only in his native Dominican Republic, supposedly also brings love and luck to the wearer. This bottle will be a nice plus for collectors. Noteable is the (remove-able and wear-able) silver ring on the neck of the bottle, a “wedding ring” engraved with the designer’s signature logo — a symbol of Mr. de la Renta’s abiding devotion to his beloved clientele.
