Spring is the season for fresh starts, whether personally or within your humble abode. Perhaps you’ve thought about starting fresh this spring: I know I have.
Here are some of the best ways I have found to declutter and freshen-up your life.
Sometimes life gets hectic. Waking up earlier than the sunrise, and running around with what feels like the weight of the world on our shoulders can weigh us down.
We’ve all been there: waiting for the sun to set so we can finally wind down. We all need to allow ourselves that little mental break.
Tip 1: Keep a planner or bullet journal around. I like to keep a bullet journal in an easy-to-access space throughout the day. This allows me to easily write down all my tasks and goals for the day. Never stress again about forgetting an important to-do.
I prefer the bullet journal to a planner because it’s completely customizable and I like the creative freedom it offers. If you do not have a planner or bullet journal, any slip of paper, or really even your phone, will work.
The AppStore has many different planner apps to choose from. For example, the Homework App by Kerman Kohli is fantastic and available in the Apple AppStore (exclusively for IOS).
Stretch in the morning or before you go to bed. I live by this tip. Since I don’t often have time to stretch in the morning, I will usually do some stretching before bed. I recommend 25-30 minutes of no-phone stretching before bed. This helps to completely wind down and relax from your busy day.
Just make sure not to do any intense stretches. The idea is to slow your pulse, not raise it. I recommend upward dog and a supine twist. Try putting on a face mask and brewing some decaffeinated tea to sip in between stretches.
If you would rather stretch in the morning, I highly recommend stretching as you brew coffee or tea. The time it takes to brew will be the perfect amount of time to stretch, and at the end, a nice hot drink will help you relax even more.
While still calming, you can intensify your stretching in the morning. It will make you feel more energized, which will give you that extra fire to get through a busy day. The sundial salutation is a fantastic stretch to boost the blood flow.
Start reading daily quotes that interest you. This tip is really easy to do and will leave you feeling more peaceful. Read a quote throughout any part of your day that you feel connected to. There are many apps, books, and calendars that will give you a daily quote.
I like to write my quotes for each day at the beginning of each month. I write them all on slips of paper, fold them up, and put them in a jar. Every morning, I take one, read it, and let it inspire my day. My favorite quote is from Proverbs 27:1–“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not yet know what a day may bring.”
I really love this quote because it reminds me to stay humble throughout my day. I know sometimes it can be a real hassle to keep up with finding and reading quotes, so I found an app called: Eternal Sunshine by Londrelle Hall.
This app has a trendy vibe to it. Every day, it will send you notifications of quotes and you can read them by simply turning on your phone!
*Editor’s Note: there are also many inspirational quote apps for Android phones such as Enliven Daily Motivational Quotes.
Tip 4: Section off some time to yourself. This is important to do especially if your life is crazy. Take some time for yourself—whether it be 5 minute or an hour— to really catch your breath and breathe. Drawing, baking, exercising, or even singing are great ways to spend this precious few minutes.
I usually spend this time creating my bullet journal or writing about my day in my ‘adventure journal’. An adventure journal is my version of a diary.
I’ll write down anything I think is cool or that I would like to remember in the future. Sometimes I’ll add pictures or mementos.
Decluttering your living space can seem overwhelming, but trust me, you can do it! Once you finally get everything organized and clean, you’ll feel proud. I know it can be hard, but you just have to power through and clean up that mess!
Tip 1: Start with one of your messier rooms. Make sure to play your favorite music and invite some friends over to make it more fun! I like to have my sister sit in my room and we chat until everything is cleaned up. Sometimes our pets will even join us!
Section everything in this room into piles. Once you have the piles, put everything in the place it should be: trash gets thrown away and recycled, clothes go in the wash/hamper, etc.
Tidy up. Organize your items until they are the way you like. Dust desktops, shelves, table tops, lampshades, fans, and basically anywhere that may collect dust. Then clean mirrors and windows with your preferred glass cleaner. Throw away any items that are broken, and give away the items you do not use or need. This will give you a less cluttered look.
Move to the next room. These tips will work for cars and office spaces, too. Remember to keep your spaces clean and clutter-free after all your hard work.
