Been workin’ in the big smoke, singin’ at the pub
I talk to people everywhere – they still love the scrub
Longing for a piece of land and the Eucalyptus air
So why don’t you come with me, I’ll take you there
From “Humpin my Bluey” by John Williamson
Eucalyptus is such a distinct scent, one that you can recognize immediately. It’s a type of flowering shrub that grows mostly in Australia (did you know there are more than 700 species there)? It also grows in New Guniea and Indonesia. While eucalyptus is rare outside of Australia, some species of eucalyptus are cultivated widely in the tropical and temperate world, including occurring in Australia. Species of eucalyptus are cultivated widely in the tropical and temperate world, including the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean Basin, the Middle East, China and the Indian Subcontinent.
I personally adore the scent of genuine eucalyptus, but this resin-y/pine-y scent can be over-powering if the eucalyptus is very intense, but there’s a new Eucalyptus Collection by Thymes that captures the uplifting, invigorating, resin/pine scent and makes it spicy and warm, without bowling you over. In the Thymes version, fresh, crisp notes of eucalyptus are surrounded by a bright citrus halo of Italian lemon, lime and bergamot. The fruits temper the resin/pine and create a spiced scent that feels light and right for the warmer weather ahead.
First, I tried the home fragrance Eucalyptus Mist ($17.00 3 oz.) The notes include Eucalyptus, lemon, lime, bergamot, lemograss, rosewood and fir. It’s strong and refreshing, and just the thing to create a positive mood, even if the Winter hasn’t left us yet.
But when I requested some samples of the rest of the extensive collection, I quickly realized what I already knew, and that is fragrance translates very different sometimes when it is in different formulas.
For example, the Thymes Eucalyptus Cologne ($33.00 1.75 fl. oz.) has the same notes, but as a cologne, it takes on a masculine feel, almost like an after-shave. That’s not to say that women wouldn’t enjoy it, but I can see this really being appreciated by unisex/men as much as the unisex/women contingent.
One piece I really like, a little treat, is the $5.00 envelope of bath salts. You can use them to soak in for a relaxing and moisturizing bath, or simply tuck one into your drawer to scent whatever is in it. I like to toss one in my luggage, too1
You might want to smell the rest of this beautiful collection and layer it, as each piece does smell slightly different: Bar Soap, Body Lotion, Body Wash, Bubble Bath, Aromatic Candle, Cologne, Bath Salts Envelope, Hand Cream, Hand Lotion, HandWash and Home Fragrance Mist. PRICES RANGE: $5.00- $33.00
