Tips and tricks from a new mom on saving time and effort – while still looking chic.
For everything there is a season, even when it comes to your personal beauty routine. After having a baby last year, I realized it was time to scale back my glam schedule as I adjusted to a new mommy lifestyle. As many new mothers can relate, sometimes showering for the day can be a major fete when you’re caring for a newborn!
I feel better about myself and tend to be more productive if I have invested in a bit of “me time” each morning. Even though many aspects of my life have changed with motherhood, it’s important for me to feel like “me” and confident in my skin.
Whether you are looking to save time, money, or just need to scale back on monthly maintenance appointments, these five swaps simplify and save while helping you look and feel sexy.
#1 Then: Frequent Spa Facials
Now: Patchology FlashPatch® Illuminating Eye Gels
Although I’m not able to make it to the spa for regular facials anymore, I have a few secret weapons at home.
For example, after a particularly long night, I break out Patchology FlashPatch® Illuminating Eye Gels to combat dark circles and puffiness.
The cooling under-eye masks utilize green tea and mulberry extract and Vitamin C to improve microcirculation and lighten the appearance of dark circles.
Plus, the 5-minute under-eye mask leaves a trail of pearlescent minerals on the skin for an added “glow.” Keep them in the fridge for an even extra cooling sensation. Available: Ulta.com
#2 Then: Eye Lash Extensions
Now: Jane Iredale PureLash™ Extender & Conditioner and Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara
Eyelashes have had a major beauty moment the last several years, becoming a splurge justifiable to many for a natural or glam look.
However, bi-monthly trips to get them maintained doesn’t work with my current situation so I optimize my natural lashes with a couple finds from Jane Iredale.
PureLash™ Extender & Conditioner is my first step, acting as a lash treatment with protective algae extract to promote growth. It can be used as a mascara primer or alone, as a nighttime treatment. You can even use it to bulk up sparse eyebrows.
After applying a thin conditioner coat each morning, brush on the brand’s Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara (see advicesisters.com review) containing sea minerals and cellulose fibers for a full, voluptuous look.
The tube packaging offers more product than most mascaras, however, try not to pump the wand in and out as that allows air in and dries out the product. Available: janeiredale.com
# 3 Then: Full Makeup Application
Now: IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream With SPF 50+
Gone are my days of leisurely applying makeup while listening to an audiobook, contouring and highlighting with every specialized product under the sun. Most days I find myself reaching for IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream With SPF 50+ (Read advicesisters.com review).
A cult-favorite, the multi-faceted product provides anti-aging ingredients like peptides and vitamins, SPF protection and a full-coverage application, without the heaviness of a traditional foundation. I apply using the brand’s Heavenly Luxe Perfection Complexion Brush No 7, followed by a light dusting of blush. Add mascara and a tinted lip balm and I’m ready in under five minutes. Available: Sephora
# 4 Then: Monthly Spa Manicures
Now: Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer
Trade bright and bold colors for simpler shades of nude and pink. This is my general rule to keep polish lasting longer and concealing those annoying chips.
I love a good spa manicure, but I’ve found a great DIY version with Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer.
The polish’s formula is super-thin, making for an easy application (even when applying left-handed!).
It dries extremely fast, allowing you to get back to your business, your baby or whatever else you have going on in a jiffy.
The brand’s newly launched “Color of Pedals” collection (read the advicesisters.com review ) is spot on for simplicity, the shade “I Feel Flower-Ful,” a light, pink/nude is my current personal favorite.
# 5 Then: Frequent Salon Visits
Now: Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch-Up Spray
I still make it to the salon for regular cuts and color but I’ve extended the amount of time between appointments. This is thanks in part to Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch-Up Spray.
Roots and grays are easily disguised with customized dyes to match any hair color.
A pinpoint actuator aids in easy application, designed to be applied in the hair’s part as needed. A perfect pick-me-up, this spray saves the day (or week!) and its color lasts until shampooed out. Available: Sephora
