The Laubahn Perfumes Discovery Collection brings an unusual, olfactory experience with 4 Eau de Parfums: Lost in the Moment. Ridge; Cognac, and Hinterland.
Fragrance can be a lot more than a simple accessory. It is often a joyful journey of discovery and (for the adventurous, something that helps you define your individuality.
Those who revel in unusual fragrances will delight in the Laubahn Perfumes Collection Box ($95).
Three of the fragrances (Lost in the Moment, Ridge and Cognac) are the creation of Laubahn Perfumes/Sassy AyR (we reviewed her book Life on a Star) in collaboration with Perfumer Ralf Schweiger.
Schweiger who has designed fragrances for designers like Frederic Malle, created the fourth and most mystical fragrance in the Laubahn Perfume Collection box called “Hinterland.”
Although each of the four fragrances is a nod to a specific character or place in the fantasy book Life on a Star, the fragrances stand on their own.
Lost in the Moment Perfume:
Lost in the moment is based on on the fantasy “Lost in the Moment” beach where cashmere soft sand and pink and blue sky.
Upon the first sniff, Lost in the Moment Perfume bursts forth with soft, powdery florals, and a hint of green even though the top notes are fruits of Apricot, Lime, Orange, and Peach.
It is the middle notes that capture you: Basil, Geranium, Jasmine, Neroli, Rose, Violet Leaf.
The base notes of Sandalwood and Vanilla give it balance, but it is still quite floral. As it dries down, it reminds me of the soft pleasure of a vintage nosegay of violets.
Ridge is a citrus and herbal scent blending fresh green basil with a hint of lime and sandalwood. You can really smell the top note of lime and the middle notes of basil and neroli.
Upon drydown, the bottom notes of Cedar and Sandalwood give it staying power.
This fragrance is kind of invigorating. it’s happy and spicy, inspired by the bold and striking character Ridge in the book Life on a Star.
If you aren’t quite an oriental spice fan, this one gives you that oomph of spice but without being overwhelming.
Cognac is a soft oriental that clearly will easily appeal to men as well as women.
Tying the fragrance once again to Life on a Star, this fragrance is a nod to the October Cognac created for the Sassy Soiree’s galas in the book.
The top notes include Apple and Blackberry, but what comes through immediately is the middle note of ginger (there’s also Magnolia Plum, and rose).
Bottom notes of Indian Sandalwood, Musk make it not just spicy, but sensuous. The complexity and wide appeal makes this my personal favorite.
Hinterland (from Life on a Star, is “a forest of pine trees, winds, damp, and white, glowing fog,”
Does fog have a scent? I’m not sure, but I had a hard time defining this fragrance. It smells soft, then green, then spicy, and then whatever your body chemistry wants it to be.
Top Notes include two interesting starters: Bell pepper and Incense. The heart is Neroli, Jasmine, and Lily of the Valley, Base notes of Truffle, Boxwood, Patchouli, and Musk make it soft and mysterious.
The Bottom Line:
Most fragrances have a story behind it, so the fact that these are tied to Sassy Ayr and her book Life on a Star seems like a clever marketing strategy.
However, you don’t need to have read the book to understand what your nose likes. Also, there are brief story notes and fragrance notes that are included with the Perfumes Collection boxed sampler set.
The Laubahn Perfumes Collection Box ($95) is a wonderful way to try all four fragrances in travel-friendly 7.5ml glass spray vials. This is the gift to give to yourself as an end of the year treat, or buy for that special someone, for Valentines Day (it’s almost here).
