If Philip Pelusi of the Tela Design Studio wanted to do a torture test of his new, Tela Organics BLOW OUT organic keratin smoothing hair treatment, he got the right reporter on the right day. I have very frizzy hair. The day I scheduled a BLOW OUT treatment at the Tela Design Studio, the temperature was over 100 degrees and humid. I had attempted to flat iron my hair, but to no avail.
Philip Pelusi is the CEO and Founder of haircare brands P2 by Philip Pelusi, and the Tela Beauty Organics and 13 salons including the stunning, Tela Design Studio in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. In 2008, Philip also launched Tela Beauty Organics, the industry’s first USDA certified organic line of hair care products, meeting the highest USDA organic standards as well as including ingredients that meet the stringent requirements of the US Pharmacopeia.
The Tela Design Studio at 31 Little West 12th St. is very large, lovely and extremely tranquil. Natural light streams in from large windows, and soft music (french songs, light classical) feel pampering and soothing almost as much as the Tela Organics products, scented with rich, calming, lavender. This is the first official hair studio to offer the Tela Organics BLOW OUT treatment as a salon service.
There are plenty of anti frizz and hair straightening treatments on the market, but some are considered by some to be unsafe due to harsh chemicals that have been linked to nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia. And even if you don’t get seriously sick, some of the straightening and anti-frizz treatments still can cause nasty side effects, such as burning in the eyes, nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, skin irritation, and even nausea. The Tela Blow Out Treatment is not just a 85% USDA Certified Organic keratin smoothing hair treatment, the formula is so natural and gentle that it can be applied to hair without gloves and is actually suggested for use immediately after a hair color service, to help lock in color and enhance the condition of the hair. The divine smell of lavender is a huge plus as well, because many of the anti-frizz treatment have a residual, chemical smell that can last for days or weeks. While the Tela Beauty Organics Phyto-Keratin Smoothing Treatment BLOW OUT calms down frizz, leaving hair looking smoother and shinier for approximately 4-6 weeks, the semi-permanent organic treatment doesn’t alter the hair’s chemistry. That means it won’t weaken your hair and can actually improve it. Another issue with more permanent straightening systems (besides health concerns) is that since the hair permanently altered the curly hair grows in while the treated hair stays straight, leaving a weird pattern of grow out. And, once the hair is treated to be stick straight, that is all you have in terms of style options. A big bonus of the Tela BLOW OUT treatment is that if your hair is wavy or curly, this treatment won’t permanently steamroll out all the bounce. You can make your hair stick straight, but you can also still curl or wave it, or let it air dry for natural curls. There will be no strange grow out to suffer through, either. And, you can wash your hair after just 8 hours if you wish. Many other straightening treatments require you to stay “dirty” for days.
The entire Tela Organics BLOW OUT treatment consists of shampoo and conditioning, application of the BLOW OUT (it is a leave-in product), and then blow drying and flat ironing. As my stylist, Riccardo, blow-dried and then flat-ironed my hair, he began to smile. I asked him why. He said he loved to see great results and he was pleased with what he was seeing. When he finished and handed me a mirror. My straight, shiny hair glinted with the highlights that colorist David Stanko had created, a few months earlier. When my hair is frizzy and dry and wild, you can’t really see them. My hair felt soft, and sexy!
The Tela BLOW OUT treatment isn’t just safe and effective, it’s also well priced in the range of professional anti-frizz treatments. Many cost hundreds of dollars and require hours at the salon. BLOW OUT costs just $125.00 and takes about an hour.
What’s in BLOW OUT? It features a unique, patent-pending formula, containing a “Hydro-Charged Pelusi Ceramide Complex” that helps to de-frizz hair, without any Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde Derivatives; Aldehydes, harsh chemicals, irritating fumes or odors, and it’s also Sulfate, Paraben and infused with allergen-free fragrance. Allergen Free Fragrance. This formula is a strengthening and moisture binding plant ceramide complex that repairs, strengthens and reconstitutes hair’s inner structure with its lipid hydration system. Tela Phyto-Keratin Micro-emulsion, also designed and innovated by Pelusi, deeply conditions and penetrates hair with moisture-based plant derived amino acids, natural fruit acids, and betaine. Tela Beauty Organics Phyto-Keratin Smoothing Treatment BLOW OUT also contains Pelusi’s proprietary USDA Certified Organic Regenerating Blend: Organic Horsetail, Organic Reishi Mushroom, Organic Sprouted Soy, Organic Aloe and Lavender. Organic Bilberry, Sugar Cane and Sugar Maple. Plus, organic cuticle sealers and shine enhancers Organic Orange and Lemon.
As you can see, at the salon, my hair is shiny and straight, but I had to go outside. After enduring several sticky subway trips, walking around in seriously bad heat, and then dealing with two days of rain, my hair still looked just about frizz free. But the real test of the treatment is how it looks at home, without the expert touch of a stylist.
At home, as directed, I washed my hair with Tela CURLY Organic Shampoo $28.00 for curly, frizzy or chemically treated hair, featuring Solomon’s Seal (to rehydrate), Reishi Mushroom (to restore strength and body), and lightweight organic micro-molecular structures that help repair and restore. The I applied the Tela CURLY Organic Conditioner $28.00 for dry/curly hair. The lavender aromatherapy in both of these products make using them, a pleasure instead of a chore. Following this, I applied a dollop of HEALER Organic Damage and Split End Repair $32.00, a USDA certified 100% organic conditioner/protectant that helps deal with split ends and prevent color fade, featuring organics such as Shea Butter and Argan Oil,proteins, Pomegranate and Tomato. The final touch was a tiny spritz of REDUCE Sensational Styling Smoother $28.00. This product features a light blend of Wheat and Vegetable micro emulsions that helps smooth hair without weighting it down, making heat styling faster and easier, and even helping to cut down on drying time. Organic thermal protectants Fig and Plum help fit humidity, while organic Horsetail, Wolfberry, Chinese Giant Knotweed and Reishi Mushroom help protect hair color. and Red Algae plant extracts help filter UV rays and lock in moisture. Drying time was faster and my hair wasn’t all that frizzy. A final swipe of a flat iron made it smooth and shiny, but not limp. My hair wasn’t completely frizz free or pin straight (I’m not a stylist, after all), but it was significantly smoother and less frizzy than usual. The next time I washed my hair I got distracted by a phone call before I could blow dry. I assumed it would just look horrible, but to my delight, I had soft, tamed waves without the usual halo of frizz.
About a week after the treatment, I left for vacation. As I arrived in Anguilla, so did tropical storm Emily, dumping torrential rains and a lot of humidity. I was afraid to wash it, fearing that I would have absolutely no control over the humidity. However, I used the shampoo and conditioner, and flat-ironed, carefully. I didn’t even think to bring hair spray. I ventured out into the heat and humidity, and it began to rain a bit. This would normally make even “tamed” and flat-ironed hair, misbehave, but as you can see from the photos, even with a light shower and a bit of wind and a lot of humidity, my hair stayed sleek.
BLOW OUT is available at Philip Pelusi salons, although plans are in the works for other salons to shortly carry it as well. For more information and to book a treatment, visit the Tela website: http://www.telanyc.com
